The TogeZoneClus Core

Introduction

Hello, fellow Smogonites. I am Pyrox1s. This is my first ever RMT, and I'm pretty excited to be doing this. I started competitive battling near the end of 4th gen and had transitioned to 5th gen with relative ease. I have been lurking these boards for about a year, so I feel I vaguely understand the metagame. This team has brought me quite a lot of success, and I really enjoy using it. Unfortunately, I'm still not entirely understanding of the 5th gen metagame at this point, so any help you team raters could bring would be really useful.

Team Building Process

Okay, the team originated with my favorite Pokemon, Togetic. I loved it when I originally got it in Crystal, and I love it now. Unfortunately, Togetic couldn't be used when I started playing competitively in 4th gen because of how outclassed it is in nearly every aspect. With the new Eviolite item introduced, Togetic can become a decent mixed wall.

Knowing I can get utterly destroyed by the common BoltBeam, I thought of a Pokemon that could take both an electric type move and an ice type move. My mind went to Magnezone.
176.png

With Magnezone's unique ability to trap Steal types, I thought of a Pokemon I had always wanted to use, but was too afraid of Scizor to actually use. Reuniclus was that Pokemon.

Because these Pokemon are all painfully slow and special attackers, I wanted a revenge killer that hit hard with physical attacks. Having something to destroy Ferrothorn with is appreciated to. Conkeldurr can do that easily.

534.png

Since Togetic IS intended to be the star of the team, I knew Stealth Rocks could really hinder its walling abilities. I wanted a Spinner that could also set up its own Stealth Rocks and function as a lead. Forretress has done that well.

Fire types would have been the bane of this team. My lead and one of my main Pokemon taking super-effective damage from them meant I needed a bulky water type. Quagsire was my choice because of its grand Dream World ability.

After realizing Quagsire's Dream World ability hasn't been released, I went with a Pokemon that can take the ease off of Conkeldurr's shoulders and function as a more specific revenge killer. Also needing a SpinBlocker, I chose Gengar.

Since Forretress and Magnezone no longer had a teammate who could absorb the fire attacks for them, I decided to get rid of Forretress for another Spinner/SR lead. Since Forretress functioned as a physical wall anyways, I decided to get another one like it, Sandslash.

The people have spoken, and I have decided to change Sandslash to Donphan because of the priority and better bulk/attack.

And that is my team (up to this point, obviously)

Movesets

232.png

Donnie (Donphan) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
Donnie the Donphan. This thing is great. This used to be a Sandslash, but it was suggested to change to a Donphan because of his superior bulk, attack, and a priority move. Ice Shard is fantastic because it makes dragons have to switch out unless they like a super effective priority move to the face. Earthquake has STAB and hits everything hard. Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock make a great combo to stop the leads effectiveness by destroying their entry hazards while getting my own hazards up.

176.png

Togetyke (Togetic) (M) @ Eviolite
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Yawn
- Toxic
- Protect
- Wish
Togetic: The reason I made this team. With the Eviolite and EVs/Nature, Togetic gets up to 357 and 407.5 in Def and Sp. Def respectively. Unfortunately, Togetic's HP is fairly lackluster, so I had to invest all of the EVs possible into the stat. However, Wish generally allows more survivability. Wish also can be passed to my sweepers or another wall who is low on health. Toxic and Yawn are a deadly duo. Use Yawn on a sweeper, then predict the switch and use Toxic to severely hurt whatever comes in. Yawn can also be used just to cause switches and gain a turn to do something (like Wish) that would normally be pretty risky. Protect and Toxic can stall out sweepers or walls. Wish and Protect is a common strategy for a good reason: it works. Unfortunately, Togetic does not get Air Slash, so flinch hax cannot work as well as it can with Togekiss. Still, Togetyke is a great asset to the team.

462.png

InTheZone (Magnezone) @ Air Balloon
Trait: Magnet Pull
EVs: 40 HP / 252 SAtk / 216 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Flash Cannon
- Substitute
My steal type trapper. Magnezone is really important to the team. And Scizor trying to set up or revenge kill with Bullet Punch is stopped immediately and will be 2HKO with a Thunderbolt. Setting up a substitute allows Magnezone to do one attack to whatever comes in to revenge kill it. Air Balloon's use is fairly obvious: avoid the 4x super effective Earthquake and use any attack to strike back. Unfortunately, Magnezone has no way of healing with Leftovers because of this. The EVs/Nature are a standard set, they allow Magnezone to outspeed a standard Scizor (killing Scizor seems to seem like Magnezone's best selling point) Hidden Power Ice is chosen to do super effective damage to the dragons who are running rampant this generation. My team would be a lot more troubled without Magnezone.

579.png

Rankurusu (Reuniclus) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
Rankurusu (really Reuniclus, I just like that Japanese name better) gives the team bulk and fighting power at the same time. After a couple Calm Minds, the only way anyone could even try to hurt this thing would be with a crit that Reuniclus can just Recover off anyway. This thing has saved me so many times in matches. I usually save Reuniclus for a bit later when most of the sweepers have been taken out so Rankurusu has time to set up. Usually I can get at least three Calm Minds or even more. The EVs/Nature make the most defensively bulky set possible because Reuniclus will naturally be boosting its SP. Def. anyways. I chose Psyshock over Psychic because I prefer to hit special walls for a lot of damage even if it does cost some base power. Overall, the team wouldn't be the same without Reuniclus.

534.png

Conquerderp (Conkeldurr) (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Mach Punch
- Superpower
- Payback
- Stone Edge
Choice Banded Conkeldurr hits like a truck. A Superpower coming off of a +1 416 attack HURTS. Add a burn from someone trying to Scald me to death and its 832 (or 1248 when Choice Band is factored in). Usually, I switch this thing in on a special wall that will be devastated to take a hit like that. Then, I either predict the switch into a resistor (Gengar/Latios seem to come in a lot) and use a move that would be more effective to stopping it. Before Gengar, Mach Punch was the prime move to use. It gives priority as well as STAB. Now, I have no need to always be using it because of my revenge killer, so Superpower became the more useful option. Conkeldurr is the main powerhouse on my team, and I have had so many sweeps with it.

94.png

SpookedYa (Gengar) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
SpookedYa is the specially based sweeper for this team. The Choice Scarf makes sure I can outspeed other Gengar and Latios to hit them for super effective damage. Shadow Ball and Focus Blast give unbeatable coverage. Thunderbolt allows me to annihilate Gyarados and other bulky water types. Hidden Power Ice gives good coverage when combined with Thunderbolt, and can stop any non-boosting dragon in his tracks. Gengar is an amazing speedy sweeper to have on this team.

Old Team Members

Sandy (Sandslash) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock

Closing

Well, thank you for taking the time to read this RMT. I have tried the best I could to work out the kinks in the team, and I would love if you guys can take a look at it and help me out. This team is probably my favorite team I ever made, both in 4th gen and 5th gen, because it uses my favorite Pokemon in the most efficient way. Thanks again for reading this.

I feel that Donphan should replace Sandslash, for he has greater HP, attack and defense, learns all the same moves and has a more useful ability in Sturdy which guarentees he can set up Stealth Rock with the exception of Taunt or Magic Coat users.

I agree with above ^^ and you should try Porygon2 instead of Togetic, since Porygon2's defece and sp.def, can go alot higher with evolite, it cn learn bolt/beam, recover wich is more relaible than roost, and it can toxic things as well.

So if he replaces Togetic with Porygon2, how will Togetic be the star of the show? Unless you mean completely take him off the team. In which case, learn to read the FULL post. And wait, Porygon2's Recover is more reliable than Togetic's Roost? Why? Because it makes it weak to fighting and able to be hit by ground for a turn? As compared to Porygon, who suffers this unreliability all the time? And good point with the Toxic! It's not like Togetic can learn that...

Although, I agree with the first commenter's post. As soon as I saw the team, I thought to replace Sandslash with Donphan, who can also learn Ice Shard

Gigalith is also an option since it also gets Sturdy and has even higher Attack and Defense than Donphan, however,it cant rapid spin. And maybe max out HP on Togetic since its so lack luster THEN add to defenses? I like your Magnezone but whats the point of outrunning Scizor if you cant do anything to it? Replace HP ice with HP fire,Dragons arent that much of a threat for this team anyway when you have Conkeldurr's Stone Edge for Dragonite and Gengar for Latios.

That may be true, but Gigalith lacks a useful enough niche for standard play; Ground is a far superior typing to Rock. His Magnezone doesn't need to run HP [Ice] as Thunderbolt 2HKOs Scizor anyway, which he will trap locked into Bullet Punch. It's very unlikely Scizor will have U-Turn on a set which doesn't use a Choice Band. Having HP [Ice] can be useful when taking on dragons using Outrage, which as this his only resist, it will be of great value to him.

Now that I think about it, Gyarados may cause a few headaches here, so I'd suggest dropping Clear Smog on Gengar and replacing it with Thunderbolt. Gengar really doesn't have the bulk to use it effectively, as most attacks from boosting sweepers will probably OHKO it anyway.

Just a minor change, since you already have Protect on Toge, maybe it would be a good idea to use Wish instead of Roost?

Donphan outclasses sandslash in every way. I love the idea of using togekiss, I have been wanting to try it out for a while, but I think you should probably put a spread of 252/128/128 or something similar to make it more bulky. On gengar, you should probably use thunderbolt instead of clear smog, as you will be locked into it and the can easily kill you and reboost.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys. Yeah I would prefer if I could keep Togetic instead of some others. So here is what I feel I should address:
Donphan over Sandslash: I like this idea. What set should I use? Standard SR/Rapid Spin/Ice Shard/EQ set?
Togetic: Wish over Roost and 252/128/128 defenses.
Magnezone: I like having HP Ice just in case Haxorus comes in and locks itself into Outrage or something so I can take it out (or hurt it) with HP Ice. I'll try HP Fire as well though.
Gengar: Tbolt over Clear Smog is something I'm surprised I didn't think of before.

Thanks again, guys!

My steal type trapper.
Just pointing out this error.

Anyway the main point of this post is about a serious threat to your team : Rotom-W. Rain teams are quite popular right now, and Choice Specs Rotom-W can pretty much destroy everything on this team alone. While other rain threats on this team are dealed with by other members (Gengar can switch into Focus Blast or Nasty Plot from Thundurus as an example), you team will fail to damage the bulky version of Rotom-W. I guess being weak to the 7th most used pokemon in the metagame isn't exactly something you'd want to happen. That's why your team would be greatly improved by adding either Latios or Latias. Their natural special bulk and typing allows them to take multiple Thunder in rain (Hydro Pump hurts though) while either retaliating with a strong Draco Meteor or setting up on them. Furthermore, they provide an useful Fire resist, because Magnezone is weak to it, and nobody on your team resist it! That means Heatran in sun can hurt everything on this team for HUGE damage. Maybe it'll break your heart (sorry if it does), but I think the member you should replace with either of these dragons is Reuniclus, for typing synergy reason, and mostly taking the same use.

Maybe this Latias could work well?
Latias @ Leftovers / Timid / Levitate / 4 HP - 252 SpA - 252 Spe
Dragon Pulse - Calm Mind - Recover - Substitute

If you want a bit more offense, why not use the very underrated offensive CM Latios?
Latios @ Life Orb / Timid / Levitate / 4 HP - 252 SpA - 252 Spe
Dragon Pulse - Thunderbolt - Psyshock - Calm Mind

That's a good possibility. Obviously, I love Reuniclus on this team, but Latias fills the same role essentially with that SubCM set, so that could work well. Having some resistances wouldn't hurt this team either. I'll test that tonight when I can get on my computer with PO.
