The Utility Box

With ORAS now being released for over a month, many players are starting to finish the game and are ready to explore the post-game. Whether it's completing the Pokedex, breeding, or EV Training there are certain Pokemon which are invaluable to helping players do these as efficiently as possible.

I'd like to write an article with movesets of these in-game heroes, or utilitymons, which include but can go beyond Linoone Pickup HM Slaves. Two examples are these:

The Thief
butterfree-f.gif

Butterfree
Ability: Compound Eyes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thief

Although the EVs aren't entirely necessary, they are preferred where possible. Compound Eyes changes the chances of wild Pokemon holding items from 50%/5%/1% to 60%/20%/5% and so a Compound Eyes Thief makes wild Pokemon item farming much easier! Useful items include Lucky Egg from Pelipper which are most common on Routes 124 to 134 using Surf, and Life Orbs from Absol in Route 120 to save you some Battle Points!

The EV Trainer
tropius.gif

Tropius @ Wide Lens
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
- Fly
- Sweet Scent
- Razor Leaf

EV Training Tropius can learn Sweet Scent, Razor Leaf and Fly to move to and take down hordes! There's no reason to have to use multiple Pokemon just for EV Training when you can combine them into one awesome EV Training Machine. Fly moves you to each 100% encounter rate horde location, Sweet Scent means that you don't need to stock up on Honey and Wide Lens gives increased accuracy to pin down those pesky Sand Veil Sandshrews!

There are more of these utilitymons to write about and share, some of which are well known and others not so. They include Flame Body Talonflames for fast Egg Hatching as well as Fly transport, and Smeargles which makes catching wild Pokemon so much easier with the combination of Spore, False Swipe, Simple Beam, and Soak which helps to put Grass-Types to sleep or remove type resistances to False Swipe.

Thanks for your consideration!

This is actually a fairly interesting idea, since I don't believe we've covered the topic before. Is it okay if you write down the rest of the mons you're planning to cover so that we can see if there's enough for a whole article?

Just to be clear, just write the Pokemon, their sets, and their main function, no need to write down the whole article at this point :V

The Thief
butterfree-f.gif

Butterfree
Ability: Compound Eyes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thief

They steal wild Pokemon items. Alternatives include Dustox, Galvantula and Vivillon since they all have the Compound Eyes+Thief combination. XY=Butterfree/Vivillon ORAS=Dustox/Galvanuta

The EV Trainer
tropius.gif

Tropius @ Wide Lens
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
- Fly
- Sweet Scent
- Razor Leaf

They find and wipe out hordes for EVs. An alternative is Aromatisse which can learn Disarming Voice which doesn't miss but can't Fly. Smeargle can Fly/Sweet Scent/Disarming Voice but might not be worth the trouble unless you are interested in a long term investment.

The HM Slave
linoone.gif

Linoone
Ability: Pickup
- Cut
- Surf
- Rock Smash
- Strength

For all of your post-game HM Slave needs. Almost everyone uses a HM Slave but Linoone has the added benefit of having Pickup to get important items such as Destiny Knot and Leftovers which are important for breeding and competitive battling respectively.

The Incubator
talonflame.gif

Talonflame
Ability: Flame Body
- Fly

For Flame Body egg hatching. Flame Body + Hatching O-Power + Oval Charm = Lots of eggs. Alternative is Magcargo which is easier to obtain in ORAS but doesn't fly you around.

The Pokemon Catcher
smeargle.gif

Smeargle @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Own Tempo / Technician
- Spore
- Soak
- False Swipe
- Simple Beam / Entrainment

Pokemon Catcher. Spore puts them to sleep, Soak helps with Normal-Type resists and Grass-Types which wouldn't get spored, Simple Beam/Entrainment helps to catch Pokemon with abilities such as Insomnia, False Swipe Brings them to 1HP.

The Legendary Pokemon Catcher Squad as explained in Buckert's Guide
ralts.gif

Ralts
Ability: Synchronize
Every Nature

Or anything with Synchronise to give 50% chance to match the legendaries'. Most people would know this but could be useful information to new people who have just started playing from ORAS.

smeargle.gif

Smeargle @ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
Level: 31
EVs: 252 HP / 100 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
- Spore
- Rock Polish
- Recover
- Taunt

smeargle.gif

Smeargle @ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
Level: 31
EVs: 252 HP / 100 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
- Spore
- Rock Polish
- False Swipe
- Swords Dance

staraptor.gif

Staraptor
Ability: Reckless
Level: 43
- Final Gambit
- Fly

These three are explained extensively in Buckert's Guide but the idea is that they are specially designed to quickly discover the precise IVs of Legendaries, making soft resetting for them much easier.

The Breeder

ditto.gif

Ditto @ Destiny Knot / Everstone
- Transform

A breeder's best friend. Would mention having multiple spreads other than perfect, including 31/0/31/31/31/31 for special attackers, 0 Spe for Gyro Ball and Trickroom, and Hidden Power Dittos.

The Fisherman

swalot-f.gif

Swalot
Ability: Sticky Hold

Want to Chain Fish Shinies? This is the way to go so that you don't break your chain. Anything with Sticky Hold works but Swalot is one of the easier ones to get in ORAS.

Hoping that this is an extensive enough range which can interest both new players as well as long-time players with the lesser known ones.

Some of them could be grouped together, like Ditto with Talonflame/Magcargo as a breeding kit, and Smeargle with Swalot for catching purposes. There are other mons elligible for the HM slave position, Wailord and Tropius springing to mind, but Linoone has the added benefit of Pick Up, so there's that.

But yeah, I like this, so I'll approve this. If you need help to fleshen things out, we'll see what we can do. I've now given you access to our workshop, and here's some general advice we give all new writers:

1) Get your stuff done on time. If there's ever a situation that comes up, talk with The Smog Staff, and we'll make accommodations. The key here is communication; we need to hear from you if something is up that will prevent you from meeting the deadline. Try to get your stuff done in two weeks if possible, in order to give the GP/HTML/art team time to get everything done.

2) Don't leak any of our stuff until the release happens. This includes art and any other information. If you ever want feedback on your work or have questions, you can join us in #thesmog on IRC (if you don't have IRC, you can PM me or another staffer on the forums and I'll give you a link).

If you need any help, please don't hesitate to ask The Smog Staff. When you post your thread in the Article Workshop, you need to set labels for it. You'll need to set the issue's number too. For the tags that say WIP, Grammar, etc, those are the stages your article are in. Since you'll ideally be working on the article after posting your thread, mark it as WIP. When you finish, move it to Grammar and get it checked twice by other people. Afterward is the HTML stage and someone will put it into HTML code. Your article will eventually get art done for it and it'll be complete!

Welcome to the force!
