This Ain't BTD4, but Spikes are Still Useful!

Hey guys, it's Dragon here! Some of you may have read my other RMT- http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3461358. That was my attempt at an offensive team, and it worked pretty well, but I had trouble with stall. I tried around with some other teams, but none worked as well as the original. I was about to give up, until I encountered the amazing pokemon that is sableye. I made a stall team around this guy, and my new team is even more successful than the previous, lifting me up to around a 1100 ranking. He're the team:
485.gif
196.gif
302.gif
423_e.gif
227.gif
380.gif

This team is based off of gradually wearing down my foes with a combination of hazards and status effects. It's also my undercover metagame assassin. Heatran handles sun and hail quite nicely, while sandstorm is THE weather of fashion for my divas, Gastro and Skarm. Gastro and Latias can also soak in all the rain they need(though Gastro has to be wary of those "fun guys" that might attach to his grass-weak body). Espeon and Sableye troll offensive and "stall and wall and lol" teams. Without further ado, let's get started:
heatran_wuvs_balloon_by_pyritie-d2z6apb.png

Espada # Uno- Heatran @ Air Balloon (M)
Nature: calm (+Sp def, -Atk)
Ability: Flash Fire
248 HP, 100 Sp. Def, 160 Spe.
Moves:
Stealth Rock
Lava Plume
Earth Power
Roar
Bask in the firey glory of the magnifecent, should-be-in-ubers-but-fortunately-it's-not Heatran! Keeper of the nest of the Legendary pokemon that is Entei, Ruler of Volcanoes and Mt. Vesuvius! Heatran is my lead, setting up SR as early as possible, while countering the two most common leads in the OU metagame- Tyranitar and Ninetales. Lava Plume does decent as a STAB, and Earth Power is so that opposing Heatrans can't touch me, or dare to switch in. Roar is to abuse my own rocks, and to cause more emotional mayhem for my opponent. Hey, physical torture is outlawed, but who says that I can't make my opponent's head spin with prediction that it blows spikes away at 100 MPH? (but it's ok I have my spin blocker ready)
413402Espeon_Leap.png

Purple Doggie- Espeon @ Light Clay (M)
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)
Ability: Magic Bounce
252 HP, 72 Def, 184 Spe.
Moves:
Light Screen
Reflect
Psyshock
HP fire
Hello there. You are not actually reading Dragon's post, I am just transporting these words to your head through telekenisis. In fact, your whole life until now has been secretly controlled by me...
Wow, that was creepy. But that's why my purple doggy is. Creepy. It's useful ability, Magic Bounce, reflects hazards, status, and all kinds of other shit aimed my way. Espeon's one and only goal is to come in, set up screens, and make it away unscathed. Psyshock hits Blissey for a decent amount of damage, and HP fire is a lead (not silver as it says in the Smogon analysis because it would be a waste of metal) bullet aimed straight at Scizor's not so fleshy heart. Espeon counters a lot of pokemon that would give my a lot of bull shit, and is my main answer to opposing stall teams.
Sableye_is_Worth_of_by_BehindtG.jpg

Bitch- Sableye @ Leftovers (F)
Nature: careful (+Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk)
Ability: prankster
252 HP, 120 Def, 136 Sp. Def.
Moves:
Wil o Wisp
Taunt
Recover
Foul Play
My Sableye is called "Bitch" for a reason. (And no, it's not because it's out of the kitchen.) It's extremely annoying ability allows it to work hand-in-hand (or paw in paw) with Espeon to make "stall and wall and lol" really hard. Wil o Wisp cripples physical attackers and sweepers that want to resist my roars and whirlwinds. Taunt shuts down other hazards that would prevent me from setting up my own hazards. Recover makes it last longer, and Foul Play hits EXTREMELY hard (like the way that water bottle hit Justin Beiber in the face hard), OHKO'ing even Latios without any defensive investment (and hey, who is stupid enough to do that?). Sableye doesn't FORCE pokemon out as like Heatran bares its fangs and yelps, but it annoys opposing players so much that the LAST thing they want to do is leave in their other fat bitch, Blissey, in to the unimaginable wrath of my prankster taunting Sableye.

IHATEMUD- Gastrodon @ Red Card (F)
Nature: Bold (+Def, -Atk)
Abillity: Storm Drain
252 HP, 4 Sp. Atk, 252 Sp. Def.
Moves:
Toxic
Ice Beam
Earth Power
Recover
Gastrodon, oh Gastrodon. If there was ANY pokemon that could be more picky than Gastro, it's its fashion friend, Skarmory. Gastrodon can ONLY work well when grass types are gone, when there are NO hazards on the field, and when half the opponent's pokemon are slower than it is (which never happens unless Esp. comes in and bounces a twave). If all of these conditions are set, however, picky Gastro quickly becomes an annoying threat that NOBODY likes to deal with. It's useful ability, Storm Drain, allows it to switch in at water attacks aimed at Espada # uno, and it's ice beam helps force out powerful dragon sweepers such as DD Dragonite and Salamence, CM Latias and Latios, and the rare flygon that showed up for a party in one of my previous battles (if you ask me, flygons have HORRIBLE fashion sense. Gastro was really annoyed.). Earth Power hits hard as a STAB move, and Recover and Toxic allow me to stall the will out of my opponent. Then, there is THE MOST AWESOME ITEM EVER- the Red Card. This little piece of plastic, shaped like a useless credit card, may seem JUST like a useless credit card, but its magic is far beyond paying for your groceries. It forces out my opponents whenever Gastro is hit, so Gastro can phaze without phazing. The magical Red Card has saved me from dozens of scenarios- it forced out a +4 sp. atk latias that otherwise would have sweeped my team, and it shone in the face of one of my opponents, causing him to misclick (true story!).
scaled.php

Penguin- Skarmory @ Leftovers (F)
Nature: careful (+sp. def, -sp. atk)
Ability: sturdy
252 HP, 232 Sp. Def, 24 Spe.
Moves:
Whirlwind
Brave Bird
Spikes
Roost
Meet the most fashionistic bird in the pokemon universe- Skarmory. It's shiny feathers and sleek, metallic body show that it has DEFINITELY been shopping at Prada (where it gets the money, no one will know). After you're done pondering at how that heavy piece of metal can actually fly, you'll begin to realize that one of the most useful pokemon in the OU tier is staring at you right in the face. Skarmory's natural bulk allows it to come in, set up spikes, roost, and whirlind my opponent to a spiky death. Brave bird hits and kills most unboosted fighting types in the tier that would otherwise form an unresisted sweep. Magnezone a problem? Take that tbolt (like a boss), like cuz' of sturdy (like a boss), and whirlwind that piece of scrap AUWT before it does anything else (like a boss). Most of the time, I can come in and set up spikes at least two or three times. For some reason, Skarm just LOVES to set up on Latias. It just loves to (maybe it's a girl thing). Also, most common spinners don't dare to come in ad risk taking a Brave Bird to the face.
latias_latias.png

Big Sister- Latias @ Leftovers (F)
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)
Ability: Levitate
252 HP, 252 Spe, 4 Def.
Moves:
Dragon Pulse
Wish
Protect
Roar
We've all heard that Latios can fly faster than jet planes. It is capable of understanding human speech, and is one of the best abusers of the expert belt. But what about his sister, Latias? Where's HER medal of honor?
I smacked in Latias in my team not because I needed her, but because of her Dragon typing and her superb defenses and access to roar. And what do you know, she fits in perfectly! Her useful ability helps her absorb ground moves aimed at Heatran when his balloon is popped. Wish provides a useful recovery for my team, passing around 175 HP. Roar allows me to phaze, Protect to abuse Wish and Lefties, and Dragon Pulse as a STAB move of choice. Latias's typing and bulk allow me to sponge hits that no other pokemon could otherwise take (such as a venasaur's solarbeam in the sun or a waterfall from a gyarados after Gastro is dead).

So there's my team. It's not perfect, however. Here are some problems that I have trouble with:

SCIZOR. This thing OHKO's every thing in my team bar Gastro and Skarm with either Uturn, Pursuit, or Superpower (the thing is, though, Gastro and Skarm can't do anything to scizor except force it to switch). Once it's burned by Sableye, it's easily handled, but of course, Scizor has some odd magic that makes WiloWisp miss every single time.

SUN. I have to tread carefully when I face sun teams. I have to save my Latias, Espeon, and Heatran until all minor threats are gone. Esp. helps alot when handling venasaur, bouncing back that annoying sleep powder and forcing it out with a threatening psyshock, but other sweepers such as NP ninetales, Uturn Victini, and Darmanitan give me a ton of trouble, especially after Heatran is dead.

SPINNERS. This one is aimed at Hitmontop, Starmie, and Tentacruel. Hitmontop can foresight and pursuit, Starmie can fire off powerful STAB Hydro Pumps, and Tentacruel can Toxic and set up it's own hazards. Tenta is handled by Espeon, but sometimes it can be problematic because i can't tell whether it's going to spin or set up.

BULKY WATERS. Other than phaze them out, there's nothing I can really do to these things. Jellicent gets a notable mention because of wilowisp.

LATIAS. Traitor. This pokemon takes NOTHING from ANYBODY after even just one calm mind. I was teased because I had no physical sweeper.

Here are some unmade decisions:
Dragon Pulse or HP fire on Latias?
Trick+Lagging Tail or Foul Play on Sableye?
Toxic or Scald on Gastro?
Wish or light screen on Espeon? (my team is specially defensive, i usually don't take much from special hits anyway)

What's this? Espeon is telling you to make thoughtful and helpful posts... I guess you should listen to him! :)

Hey. I think your team is very weak to Heatran. Nothing at all can touch it. I think an Offensive Heatran would help out. It will also help beat Adamant Dragonite, another huge threat to the team. You do lose out on phazing, but Latias can do that. You don't need a Specially Defensive Heatran due to having Gastrodon and Latias on your team, who will be able to take care of special threats well. Using Scald over Toxic would also benefit Gastrodon, and it will allow it to beat Heatran. I'd switch Skarmory for a Physically Defensive one, to be able to take hits better on the physical side. Gastrodon and Latias are two Pokemon that can take Special hits. It will help against Choice Band Scizor, Dragonite, Haxorus, and Bulk Up Conkeldurr. Now that Skarmory is Physically Defensive, using Sableye is a rather big nuisance to the team. I'd try out Bulk Up Breloom to help beat VoltTurn. It helps counter Gastrodon, who is another threat to your current team. It has access to Spore, which allows it to instantly put something to sleep for the whole game, unless the opponent stays in whilst you set up. If your opponent does switch, it's pretty much a free KO. Now, CM Reuniclus is another Pokemon who will be causing you problems. You should replace Espeon, who isn't too useful right now with Latias' presence, by a Mix Tyranitar. It will help beat Reuniclus, as well as checking Gliscor and Scizor with Ice Beam and Fire Blast. It also helps against Gengar and Jellicent. Dual Screens aren't really needed on this team, since you have a pretty solid defensive core already. Sandstorm also helps your team, in a way, since Heatran and Skarmory are both immune to Sandstorm, whilst Latios and Gastrodon have Leftovers to recover the HP lost during Sand is up. Breloom, thanks to Poison Heal, gets 6.5% HP each turn, which is more than the one it loses. The presence of Sandstorm ruins Focus Sash users, as well as helping your team against Sun and Rain team, who tend to cause problems.

TL;DR Version

Offensive Heatran > Specially Defensive Heatran
Pros: Faster, hits harder, covers more threats like Dragon Dance Dragonite.
Cons: Less bulk on the Special Defense side.

Scald > Toxic for Gastrodon
Pros: Beats Heatran, 30% chance of Burn, STAB move.
Cons: Harder to beat Stall

Physically Defensive Skarmory > Specially Defensive Skarmory
Pros: Beats pretty much all physical sweepers. Helps your team on the physical side.
Cons: Less Special Defensive bulk.

Bulk Up Breloom > Sableye
Pros: Beats VoltTurn, can pretty much get a free KO with Spore.
Cons: You lose Taunt.

Mix Tyranitar > Espeon
Pros: Lets you handle Slowbro, Gengar and Reuniclus with much more ease, isn't Pursuit-weak.
Cons: No Dual-Screens

Since you said you have trouble with will o wisp's poor accuracy, why not give sableye wide lens? It already has reliable (and priority) recovery anyway. Give it a try.

Hello,

I will rate this team fast.
Because it seems like you like DS Espeon for the protection of your team you may want to try and use set up pokemon like dragonite, gyarados, etc. A set up pokemon would highly increase the efficiency of your team because after setting up the DS your set up pokemon is free to sweep. I would recommend a Dragonite instead of Latias.
I would also suggest an offensive heatran with SR over your existing Specially Defensive. because gastrodon does the job with absorbing special attacks.
On the other hand you can use an offensive espeon with substitute cm psyshock and hp fire. With this set your special side would have an enough pressure so that you can keep the former heatran and dragonite.
However, i would recommend the first option..

@expertphysics: i like the breloom idea, but i need sanleye as a spinblocker. Tyranitar seems like a good idea, but then i'll need a spinner. Heatran and Skarm are helpful, though. Thanks!
@lasers: i'll try it. Miss hax aren't really that problematic, but it should help.
@emirinho: i actually used to use parashuffler before latias, but it didn't really work out. It couldn't wish pass, it was shut sown by taunt, and it was weak to hazards. Also, thanks for the suggestion of setup, but this is a stall team; i don't need to sweep. Offensive espeon is worth trying though.
Thank you alk for your help!

try using toxic on heatran, it helps against bulky waters and latias

also, try running cm/roost over wish/protect on latias: your team doesn't really have any offensive oomph to break through pokemon and it also helps with sun

Hi there, you got a nice semi-stall team there and well-balanced. Volt-turn rips this team easily apart, all thanks to Scizor. Espeon is the weakest link on your team because, as emirinho said, his support must be used on offensive pokemons like Dragonite or BP teams. My suggestion is to replace Espeon for Bulk Up Breloom to deal with Volt-Turn cores. With Spore, Breloom is guaranteed to incapacitate a slower pokemon or someone that can barely damage him. Thanks to the Sp.Def EVs, Rotom fails to 2HKO with HP Ice and after one Bulk Up, Scizor fails to do the same with Bullet Punch. Drain Punch & Poison Heal increases his life span being immune to status, making him an excellent stallbreaker.

Gastrodon, in my own opinion, should only be used in weather teams looking for a pokemon that can check Rain, without wasting a party-slot that could be used to capitalize your own weather. Gastrodon does little on this team, because is useless vs Sun & Sand. I would like to suggest Eviolite Chansey mainly because it is a better special wall that fits this team perfectly. With an Eviolite, Chansey avoids the 2HKO from Latios´s Psyshock and with her already insane Sp.Def, she can take most Rain & Sun teams that rely on Special Attackers like Starmie & Volcarona to sweep. With her already high HP, you will be passing out 352 HP Wishes that are always welcomed by Skarmory, Sableye and Heatran.

With Chansey serving already as a Wish passer, you might want to change Latias moveset to: Calm Mind / Dragon Pulse / Recover / [Roar] or [HP Fire]. With Breloom incapacitating a probable counter like Tyranitar, and Heatran & Skarmory resisting all of her weaknesses, Latias is better at doing a role as a bulky sweeper. Calm Mind raises her high Sp.Def and modest Sp.Atk to high levels and with Recover, most Special Attackers fail to get through her. Dragon Pulse is the main STAB to use. As the last slot, you have two options that serve a purpose: Roar helps you to phaze other pokemon like Reuniclaus trying a CM war, opposing Heatran trying to Roar you out, and it helps against BP if Latias got some boosts under her belt, since they risk Espeon to be hurt badly by Dragon Pulse. On the other hand, HP Fire will make Latias a 2nd check to Turn/Switch being capable to OHKO Scizor, since he is the only pokemon that can threaten her.

As my last suggestion, I agree with most other users´ recommendation of using Offensive Air Balloon Heatran and Physically Defensive Skarmory over your current sets, since a Sp.Def Tran has no real benefit from an Air Balloon and Skarmory is way better at taking physical hits than setting up on Bulk mons. Overall nice team, and I hope my rate helps.

Here are the sets:
286.gif

Breloom (M) @ Toxic Orb Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 236 HP / 212 SDef / 60 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Spore
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Seed Bomb
113.gif

Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Wish
- Toxic
- Protect
- Seismic Toss

@ssbm: toxic would be great, but then i lose a useful move. Roar and SR are manditory, and lava plume and earth power are both necessary to counter most if heatran's counters.
@motagua: well, since breloom is such a popular suggestion, looks like it's best if i use it! Chansey seems like a nice idea; its wish will be useful. Instead of protect, could i run stealth rock, so heatran can have toxic too? And latias, i will give her CM and dragon pulse (i need roar to phaze) Thanks for the ideas!

@Dragontongue195040: I would stay with Protect on Chansey to scout any pokemon switching into her trying to Trick her, while it allows her to recover fully. Dont forget about Offensive Heatran & Physically Defensive Skarmory! Nice I was able to help :).

UPDATE:
Team:
Heatran
Breloom
Sableye
Blissey
Skarmory
Latias
Changes:
Offensive heatran.
Bulk up breloom instead of espeon.
Wide lens on sableye
Chansey instead of Gastro.
Physically defensive skarm.
CM recover latias.

I thank everyone for their help. I'll post these changes by tomorrow (hopefully)

Cool team, man. Bloons TowerDefence is a fantastic game.

Anyhow, this is a nice team, but it can substantially be improved. One threat that stands out against this team would be Specs Latios. Draco Meteor is capable of Knocking out Gastrodon while Heatran is easily beaten down by numerous Surfs in conjunction with entry hazards. The rest of your team really stands little change against Latios's powerful attacks, save Latias who can take any non Dragon attack, but it's generally a bad idea to switch Latias in on any Pokemon that wields a Dragon attack. While Latios is technically restricted to one move by specs, it demands perfect prediction from you every time it comes in and you often end up losing a Pokemon if you slip up there. Any good player will recognize this and devise a strategy to ensure that Latios can break through your core, so it's best that you find something to stop this top tier threat. Additionally, Specs Tornadus generates the same problems with Focus Blast and Hurricane at its disposal. Hurricane is capable of 2HKOing your entire team, save Heatran. You have no means of changing the weather either, so Hurricane will also have 100% accuracy each time it's used under rain, meaning you don't have any hope for what would be its 70% accuracy chance to backfire. Although the paradox of prediction is again prevalent in this situation, as sending in Heatran on what you thought was a Hurricane can cause it to be removed from the match easily, allowing Tornadus to push through your team, for the most part. Luckily, Specially Defensive Jirachi is able to not only beat both of these monstrous special threats by shrugging off literally every attack in their arsenal, but it's also able to provide Wish support to Heatran and the rest of its teammates to further ensure their ability to stay alive in the match. I suggest putting the suggested Jirachi over your Espeon. The reason being is that while Magic Mirror is a very useful ability for keeping Spikes off of your side of the field, Espeon is simply lackluster in its walling abilities and since this is a defensive team, countering the many threats of the BW OU Metagame should be top priority. Anyways, here's the Jirachi set, I hope it works well for you.

dpiconani385.gif

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 216 SDef / 40 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Iron Head
- Body Slam
- Wish
- Protect

Additionally, I see Dragonite as a pretty big threat to this team. Skarmory is a great wall, but with Roost, Dragonite will simply get to +6 with ease and just stall it out, as brave bird really does pittance to Dragonite. Luckily enough, you can optimize your Heatran enough so that no DD Dragonite will get past your team. The Dragonite that run 3 attacks can be beaten down by Skarmory and then Will O Wisped by Sableye, as they have no recovery, so they shouldn't be a huge problem for your team. Any Dragonite with a Dragon move and Earthquake is simply stalled out by Skarmory, so Fire Punch variants are essentially the most threatening, because they can beat Skarmory after some boosts. Anyways, I think that you should replace Earth Power on your Heatran with Toxic. Not only does it hold the benefit of being able to put Dragonite on a timer, but it also holds the benefit of being able to Poison many annoying bulky waters that switch in on Heatran, such as Politoed, Gastrodon, Rotom-W, the list honestly hoes on. Toxic is also a fantastic tool for stopping Volcarona. Finally, if you really want to get the hardcore advantage against Dragonite, and also use the Balloon to the best of its ability, I reccomend trying Hidden Power Ice over Roar. Hidden Power Ice not only deals a ton of damage to Dragonite, but also hits three Pokemon that can't touch an airborne Heatran, supereffectively, those being Landorus, Gliscor and Salamence. You might want to try it out.

Change Summary:

Heatran:

Earth Power->Toxic
Roar->Hidden Power Ice [probably more optional]

I'll finish this rate up with a few moveset changes that you might want to employ. The first is changing Earth Power to Earthquake on Gastrodon [and if you do this, also change to a relaxed nature, so that Earthquake doesn't lose any power. The reason for recommending Earthquake is that it allows you to beat SubCM Jirachi, as Earthquake's physical damage is unnafected by Calm Mind boosts, while Earth Power's is. Gastrodon has a usable attack stat, so the absence of Earth Power won't be that different, but it comes with the added benefit of beating Jirachi and also dealing more damage to Heatran, since most invest in Special Defense rather than Physical Defense. Since you'll now have Jirachi, I reccomend giving Latios Calm Mind over Protect and Roost over wish. CM+Roar Latias is an excellent partner for Skarmory, a fantastic additional check for many special threats and also brings a good deal of offensive presence to this team.

Change Summary:

Gastrodon:

Earth Power->Earthquake and Relaxed Nature

Latias:
Wish->Roost
Protect->Calm Mind

Also backing the change to Phys Def Skarmory.
