Hi RMT!
this meta has been extremely frustrating to me. More so than other generations, it feels like you need a counter for every single mon or you look like an idiot and get absolutely cooked. A few iterations of the team below (one with Chien Pao)
got the team below got me to the mid 1600s, but I quickly plummeted afterwards and am looking for some help to patch it up.
Slowking @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Future Sight
- Chilly Reception
- Slack Off
Slowking is a pivot and special wall of the team. It’s pretty passive but I find it’s necessary for opportunities to set up for Hydreigon and Kingambit Also Specs wake absolutely cooks everything if this guy isn’t here
Hydreigon @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse
- Flash Cannon
- Nasty Plot
- Substitute
Hydreigon serves as the main sweeper of the team and Garg check. It’s usually the mon I will tera and I often tera it early on to get a sun off on a u-turn. I’ve been very impressed with Hydreigon this gen. I was able to ride it to 1600 elo in January and this set still works.
Great Tusk @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Knock Off
Standard defensive tusk here. I run body press of EQ to chip Rotom, but I’m not attached to it
Gholdengo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Good as Gold
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Make It Rain
- Shadow Ball
- Dazzling Gleam
- Trick
scarf Gholdengo serves as speed control for the team. Tera fairy is to catch dragons, scarf Meow, and Valiant by surp.
Skeledirge @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 188 SpD / 28 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Torch Song
- Hex
- Slack Off
It seems it’s absolutely necessary to run an unaware mon now which is kind of annoying but such is the meta. This Dirge set users the EVs from the substitute set on smogon but swapped slack off for sub to add longevity.
Kingambit @ Lum Berry
Ability: Supreme Overlord
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Kowtow Cleave
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance
Gambit is the breaker, endgame sweeper, and ghost switch in for the team. Everyone knows what Gambit is capable of now. It’s just a matter of getting his threats out of the way.
Problematic Mons:
Bulk up Tusk:
this can be really annoying. I have switch to Dirge on the switch and hope that he doesn’t EQ. Then tera immediately.
Baxcaliber:
No real switch ins to the banded iteration in the whole meta. The DD variant can be beaten with a mix of Gholdengo and Dirge but it can still sweep pretty easily.
Specs Pult:
Hits through Sub and shadow ball wrecks Slowking.
I would appreciate any recs or changes to the team even if it’s getting rid of a few Pokémon! It feels like the is team lacks a distinct “goal” which may be why I go through such losing streaks with it.
Thanks!
