Hello, everyone. First time playing pokemon competitively, but always kind of stalked smogon for cool uses of pokemon. Anyways, this time around I wanted to try playing and wanted to go with a balanced sort of team. I built this team around only the new pokemon (mega's included) of this gen, so thats where i keep my limitations.
Currently climbing from 1300+ on Showdown. The team tends to do well, but it largely depends on the match up, because sometimes it does incredible, while other times it does turrible. (Never really a middle ground, its either sweeping or getting swept it seems)
Anyways:
Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Earthquake
- Crunch
When I started building the team using only new pokemon, I was kind of limited on my Stealth Rock users. I originally tried Tyrantrum, but without Rock Head I found him inferior. Tyranitar was always a favorite and opted to use him instead of Aggron. He really isn't meant to sweep, as I primarily use him to setup rocks and poison tough poke's while he takes hits. Sand Stream isn't a huge benefit other than small chip damage, so I considered Unnerve to prevent Sitrus/Lum Berry, which would also prevent me from giving enemy Excadrills speed boost, but idk. EQ/Crunch for decent damage/coverage.
Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Gooey
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast
When I don't open with Mega Tyranitar I almost always open with Goodra. Most people overlook Goodra and don't know what to expect, but he really is something else. A meaty tank who is capable of sweeping teams. Goodra was a pokemon I wanted to use right of the gate. Fire blast to cover Ferrothorn and venusaur. Draco for opposing dragons, Swampert, Charizard and pretty much anything I need dropped quickly at the sacrifice of SpA. Thunderbolt works great and can usually 2KHO an incoming Azumarill if luck is on my side. Focus Blast, when it actually hits, is for normal types, Conkeldurr, other Tyranitars, and like my only answer for Chansey, which is a huge problem for this team.
Aegislash @ Air Balloon
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Quiet Nature
- Flash Cannon
- Shadow Ball
- King's Shield
- Shadow Sneak
Another pokemon I wanted to use before even starting the team was Aegislash. Little did I know how powerful he was. I run a pretty standard set, i think, but use Flash Cannon over Secret Sword to cover fairies. Shadow Ball coverage works great, as does King's Shield to tank hits while Tyranitar's Toxic/Sand chips away.
Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Hidden Power [Fire]
If Goodra isn't able to spread a lot of the damage I need, Greninja usually can. Protean allows me to take more risks than I would with him, Standard set, using hidden power fire to cover grass/steel types. Dark pulse works alright for the few psychics I fight. Great coverage for dragons as well, just a little bit of a glass cannon.
Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Brave Bird
- U-turn
- Roost
I really was skeptical about this bird when I was building my team, but putting him in really turned the tides for me. I am considering switching U-Turn for Swords Dance, but I usually use him as scout if I'm not bird spamming. Gale Wings combined with a Sharp Beak Brave Bird really covers a lot of threats. Roost is to beef myself back up from my recoil. Flare Blitz I really only use if I have to against steel/grass, the recoil tends to make me play catch up against incoming revenge killers.
Sylveon @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Calm Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Shadow Ball
- Heal Bell
- Wish
I of course wanted to add a fairy and Sylveon is a great choice. Hyper Voice is a great spammable move that does decent damage to most pokes, but is mostly there for substitute and dragons. Shadow Ball for ghost and psychic pokes. Heal Bell to clear off thunder wave, mostly, and any status effect. Wish to heal back up talonflame/greninja after life orb damage recoil, but also for tyranitar if i need to setup sr/toxic again.
Threats:
Haven't played a whole lot, but this is from what I could test/remember. Usually, my biggest issue is that I could've prevented a lot of things from happening but my moves miss. (ie: Fire Blast on a baton pass scoliopede that misses and effs me over)
Stealth Rock - It really puts Talonflame in a baaaaaad spot.
Chansey - If I can't take it down relatively quick its usually worn me down and taken down a potential sweeper. I feel the team is weak against stalling pokemon in general. (I may also suck)
Breeloom/Azumarill - Are sometimes a problem depending on the momentum that they get (baton pass/belly drum.)
Zapdos & Jolteon - I don't have much coverage for electrical types, I could maybe make that up on Tyranitar.
