[SET]
Defensive (Ting-Lu) @ Leftovers / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock / Spikes
- Ruination / Spikes / Rest
- Earthquake
- Whirlwind
[SET COMMENTS]
Ting-Lu's high bulk, further boosted by Vessel of Ruin, and access to both Spikes and Stealth Rock make it an elite entry hazard setter and tank in National Dex UU. Ruination reduces Ting-Lu's passivity, notably letting it wear down otherwise sturdy switch-ins such as Rotom-W and Mega Venusaur. Ruination can also pop Air Balloon held by foes such as Aegislash, letting Ting-Lu beat them one-on-one. Running both Spikes and Stealth Rock is an option on more offensive teams, letting Ting-Lu maximize its hazard-setting prowess, but it loses out on valuable utility by doing so. Rest lets Ting-Lu more consistently wall foes such as Mega Tyranitar and Iron Moth long-term, though while it's asleep Ting-Lu is very vulnerable to wallbreakers and setup sweepers. Alongside letting Ting-Lu damage foes using the hazards it set up, Whirlwind lets Ting-Lu phaze setup sweepers such as Sinistcha and Celesteela. It also prevents Ting-Lu from being setup fodder to foes resistant or immune to Ground such as the aforementioned two, something especially problematic if Ting-Lu isn't running Ruination. Leftovers slightly makes up for Ting-Lu's lack of reliable recovery, though Heavy-Duty Boots can be run instead to mitigate its vulnerability to entry hazards. Ting-Lu best fits on bulky offense and balance teams looking for a potent hazard setter and tank capable of checking dangerous threats such as Iron Moth and Mega Latias. These traits are appreciated by defensive and offensive Pokemon alike, such as Mega Venusaur and Iron Moth. Teams focused on hazard stacking can add another teammate such as Skarmory to set up Stealth Rock or Spikes so Ting-Lu doesn't have to run both. Offensive pivoting cores such as Iron Moth + Rotom-W can rapidly wear down Ting-Lu while preventing it from fulfilling its defensive roles effectively. Knock Off users such as Clefable and Scizor can lure in and remove these pivot's Heavy-Duty Boots or Leftovers, leaving them more vulnerable to Ting-Lu's entry hazards. Despite its great bulk, Ting-Lu has a plethora of weaknesses that let foes with super effective moves such as Clefable and Hydrapple have an easy time breaking through it, making checks to them such as Mega Venusaur and Celesteela good partners. Galarian Zapdos deserves a special mention due to its ability to switch into Ting-Lu with ease and the immense threat level it poses to Ting-Lu's team, making a teammate such as Slowbro or a physically bulky Rocky Helmet user such as Skarmory crucial. While it's favored to win against many foes one-on-one, some foes such as Iron Boulder have the coverage to take out Ting-Lu if it has taken a moderate amount of damage beforehand. Defoggers such as Rotom-W can ensure entry hazards don't cut into Ting-Lu's bulk if it isn't holding Heavy-Duty Boots, and the aforementioned bulky teammates such as Skarmory, Rotom-W, and Slowbro can prevent Ting-Lu from being spread too thin checking foes.
