With the release of Identifying Luck: Mario Party DS, I have achieved a Tom Scott number of 6. This is the degree of separation between a person and Tom Scott via YouTube collaborations. Two people are connected if they both directly and deliberately appeared in or helped produce the same YouTube video. More specific rules can be seen here. Some Tom Scott numbers that have already been calculated are available here.

Identifying Luck: Mario Party DS (Note: While Zike merely crediting my already-published research doc wouldn't count, we were in direct contact during the video's production and I answered his specific mechanics questions. If that isn't enough, I TASed the footage at 4:25:10 specifically for the video, which unambiguously counts.)

Tom Scott

Since Pokemon has a big YouTube presence, and many a Smogoner have dabbled in the platform, I was wondering if anyone on here also has a finite Tom Scott number. I did a moderate dive when I first drafted this post, gonna put it in a spoiler cuz its pretty redundant (I now list all links in the Oracle) and becoming outdated by the second

WolfeyVGC has collaborated with JaidenAnimations, giving him a Tom Scott number of 2. DaWoblefet did a video with Wolfey, making him a 3. Karthik helped get the footage for Dawob's "The (Formerly) Longest Turn 1 Possible in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet", making him a 4. Yoda2798 played herself in "Yoda2798 asks for DaWoblefet's meat", making her also a 4.
aim (famously Pokeaim) has also collabed with Wolfey. Pokeaim has also collaborated with Rabia (x, in turn connects to Shengineer (x)) and blunder (x, in turn connects to lax 3d elodin Foolycl emforbes fade (x); lax in turn connects to Star (x) ima Stories (x)).

freezai is a 4, having hosted a ROM hack race that SmallAnt participated in. SmallAnt has collaborated with DougDoug, a known 2. freezai's editor Shaymin Sky is therefore a 5 (note that freezai's video on the race is merely narrating over SmallAnt's already-recorded footage, meaning SmallAnt is not a direct contributor, thus skymin is not connected to SmallAnt thru this video).

I don't know the Poketube sphere as well as others here might, so I'm wondering if anyone else can find their own Scott number or knows any notable connections. I haven't even started to go through the Smogon YouTube channel yet. (UPDATE: I have added any links via the Smogon YouTube that I could find. Thanks every1 who helped get the chain started. Also, note that I haven't gone through any official VGC streams yet.) Keep in mind that Pokemon battles alone do not count as a connection. The battle would have to have taken place for the express purpose of a video (not for a tournament that exists outside of YouTube), or the players would need to interact in some other way.

The table below lists all Smogon users with a known Tom Scott number of 6 or less, and the videos thru which they are connected (chains from reoccurring individuals will only be shown the first time). Thanks everyone in the replies who helped contribute, especially fiish who provided several important connections with youtube links. Technicalities and unclear links are probably explained in the replies somewhere. Updated whenever I have time.

I dont know my Tom Scott number but with the version of this where its "how many handshakes away are you" could anyone figure out mine? I'm three handshakes away from Xi Jinping which for some reason I feel like is My Likeliest Connection to Tom Scott.

i haven't done the legwork yet but faint and i have uploads to youtube together and he has been featured by bkc (pokeheads tell me this is a big deal), which should put me in the youtube super highway. should be pretty simple from there, i am sure faint can confirm
i know bkc did a video with blunder at least

blunder has done a collab with wolfey, meaning him and everyone connected through him is 1 lower
updated, thank you for the link!

found it, thanks!

The most I could find with a brief search was DPP Ubers Invitational - Round 1: Lady Bug vs. Faint which doesn't count due to it being mere commentary over a replay. If someone could actually find this connection it'd be awesome.
i’ve worked with RADU who worked with freezai. so i am also 6:blobthumbsup:
I've found a valid connection between you and RADU, but I can't find anything between RADU and freezai, at least not with a quick search. Can you provide a link?

E: I did find that you also edited the audio here meaning youre a 6 thru Star.

Former DOU tier leader MajorBowman is better known these days by his Real Government Name as Jake Muller and is a frequent caster at VGC events, and has worked directly with Wolfe Glick (2) as a result. MajorBowman is a 3. As a result, a pretty decent number of Smogon members are 4s by appearing on official streams (and more yet are 5s through Smogon collabs with these players); this includes as featured players like zee or as fellow casters like kaori. I'm not sure if rules as written they had to speak directly to MajorBowman or not, or if just being streamed on the same day counts (in which case some 4s can probably be bumped up to 3s by being on stream at the same tournament as Wolfe).

My Tom Scott number is 4, but unless MajorBowman and I did a Smogcast together, it's actually through Magic: the Gathering, not through Pokemon. I appeared on the Spike Feeders Youtube channel here (and played badly!). All of the Spike Feeders recently did a collab with Ify Nwadiwe of Dropout TV, spread across several videos. Ify currently hosts Um, Actually, in which Brian David Gilbert fact checks, and BDG has appeared on Tom Scott's podcast Lateral.
EDIT: 3 -> 2 | 2 -> 1 | 1 -> 0

RADU is actually at 4, he edited this vid which was narrated by aim (I think he did the Tyrants vid that Blunder was on too? can't remember). By extension, that means Snak should also be at most 5 since they've edited vids alongside me and RADU, as well as anyone who's commentated at the same time as RADU or been in a vid he edited (Finch, Mason, and Elodin are who I remember offhand). So bro torterra must also be a 5 then.

I'm at 5, I edited this vid which BKC commentated on top of doing vids where both me and RADU were editors (idk if it counts but I tagged ProtonJon to get him to do a sponsored segment for ANNO Mutationem [lovely game <3] one time, which he did end up responding and following through on). Although there's a fair chance I'll be at 4 within a few weeks if some behind-the-scenes stuff goes well.

Also one time MBTYugioh laughed at my video meme on stream (and he talked fairly extensively about a decklist a close friend of mine made), and he did a collab vid with Congressman Maxwell Frost, so I've got my foot in the political space too :psysly:

Anyone in the same stream is connected to each other, provided they appeared beyond just playing the tournament itself (not sure what "featured players" means in this context). If you could give links to streams where ppl appear together that'd be awesome.

There's no public editor credit on the first video you linked, but since we're a community here I think I'll just use the honor system and take your word for it. I think that no, sponsorships like that don't count. Neither does having your content in a reaction vid, but that's pretty amusing nonetheless. I'll add those other updates and do a proper dive thru the Smogon channel soon, thx

When I mean featured players, I mean people who played a game chosen to actually be streamed, not just "appeared for a couple frames in a wide shot." I'm not sure if connections actually require you to physically speak on stream or if just being on stage counts; usually the loser doesn't get an interview.

kaori and MajorBowman streamed a regional in 2018 and I can try to dig for that vod later, but it'll be a bit difficult to hunt down every single Smogon player who's had an interview at an event MajorBowman did commentary on, which is why I didn't pick many names

tom scott with the jet lag crew in schengen showdown was lit, i approve of this message

sorry this is another non-Tom Scott post but I need Everything To Be About Me okay

But on a related note, this is a cool video about essentially the same thing but with Wikipedia articles

I'll work on getting a Tom Scott number for myself, don't you worry
