[OVERVIEW]

  • Tornadus-T's high Speed, decent Special Attack, and access to Regenerator set it apart from other pivots in the metagame.
  • Additionally, Tornadus-T’s pure Flying-type is solid both offensively and defensively, allowing it to check prominent metagame threats like Kartana and Mega Medicham
  • Tornadus-T's expansive movepool and good stats across the board also give it the ability to fit on defensive and offensive archetypes alike.
  • A prominent example is Tornadus-T’s effective use of Defog, as Tornadus-T’s set can be tailored to beat common hazard setters like Clefable and Heatran. Additionally, Tornadus-T also sports access to Knock Off and U-turn, which can also be very situationally useful.
  • However, none of Tornadus-T's stats are truly exceptional, leaving it vulnerable to being muscled past against bulkier, offensive threats like Mega Metagross and Rotom-H
  • Tornadus-T if not running Heavy Duty Boots is also vulnerable to Stealth Rock, although this is mitigated to a good degree by Regenerator.

[SET]
name: Pivot
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: U-turn / Taunt
move 4: Defog
item: Rocky Helmet
ability: Regenerator
nature: Timid
evs: 224 HP / 32 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
========
  • Knock Off is a great utility move, able to cripple common switch-ins like Chansey and non Z-move Heatran sets by removing their items.
  • U-Turn is preferred to be able to maintain momentum on forced switches, but Taunt also has value because it can cripple weaker defensive threats like Clefable and Toxapex and allow Tornadus T to potentially beat them in a one-on-one
  • Defog takes advantage of Tornadus-T's decent matchup versus common hazard setters like Ferrothorn and ability to force switches to remove hazards for its team.
  • Rocky Helmet can effectively punish common U-Turn users like Landorus-T and resisted attacks such as Kartana’s Leaf Blade.
  • However, Heavy Duty Boots is also a valid option, bypassing Tornadus-T's weakness to Stealth Rock entirely. It is not too necessary, as Regenerator cancels out Stealth Rock upon switching out.
  • 32 Special Attack EVs guarantee Tornadus-T 2HKOes Landorus-T
Usage Tips
========

  • Tornadus-T is best used as a soft check to threats like Kartana and Mega Medicham, using its decent bulk and great speed to force them out with Hurricane.
  • Tornadus-T is bulky enough to pivot into most neutral hits like Latios-Mega’s Psychic at least once, so use it as a safe means to scout out an opposing set before pivoting into the appropriate check.
  • Pivoting in on weaker or resisted attackers like Tangrowth should be used as an opportunity to freely recover HP with Regenerator.
  • Lastly, be mindful of what you can use Defog on, as more offensive Stealth Rock users like Landorus-T and Garchomp can easily KO Tornadus-T, and certain defensive setters can cripple Tornadus-T’s longevity with Toxic. Heatran and Seismitoad are examples of this.
Team Options
========

  • Fire-types like Mega Charizard X and Heatran are excellent partners, pressuring common Steel-types like Mega Metagross that can freely come in on Tornadus-T, while also appreciating Tornadus-T’s ability to remove Stealth Rock.
  • Other Regenerator Pokemon, such as Toxapex and Tangrowth have great synergy with Tornadus-T, checking threats that threaten it like both Greninja formed, while Tornadus-T prevents them from being chipped down by removing hazards.
  • Wallbreakers like Dragapult, Mega Metagross, and Galarian Darmanitan appreciate Tornadus-T’s ability to get them in safely with U-Turn and remove hazards that would chip them down, making them good options as well.
  • Answers to Electric-types threats such as Rotom-H and Zapdos like Garchomp and Mega Latios are great teammates as well.
[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Knock Off / Heat Wave
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Defog
item: Sky Plate / Flyinium Z
ability: Regenerator
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
========
  • Knock Off is a great utility move, able to cripple common switch-ins to Hurricane like Chansey by removing their items, but because Heat Wave pressures common threats that can switch-in to Hurricane such as Aegislash and Magearna better, it is the preferred option.
  • U-Turn uses Tornadus-T’s ability to switch-in to and force out Pokémon vulnerable to it like Kartana and unboosted Volcarona to grab momentum as the opponent switches out.
  • Sky Plate grants Tornadus-T the ability to break through less sturdy walls like Clefable Mega Sableye with Hurricane, but Flyinium Z is good as well for a one time nuke on dangerous threats such as Swords Dance Kartana. Other teammates typically prefer having the Z-Move, however.
  • Defog can be used on forced switches to remove hazards for Tornadus-T and its teammates.
  • Fightinium Z with Focus Blast and Firium Z with Heat Wave can be used to lure specific threats like Tyranitar or Heatran and Corviknight or Mega Metagross respectively, but they are typically inconsistent in their applicability and are team specific in their use.

Usage Tips
========

  • Tornadus-T is best used in a hit-and-run style, using Defog or throwing off a Hurricane or two before pivoting out with U-turn safely into a teammate.
  • Use Tornadus-T’s ability to force things out to your advantage by predicting your opponent’s switch-in and choosing the right move accordingly.
  • This doesn’t only apply to attacking moves or using U-Turn, as you can use these forced switches as a chance to Defog and remove hazards for your team.
  • Avoid status conditions like being badly poisoned or paralyzed at all costs from threats like Glare Serperior or Toxic Heatran, as these can severely hamper Tornadus-T’s ability to remove hazards and switch-in safely to threats like Kartana.
Team Options
========
  • Strong wallbreakers like Mega Metagross and Darmanitan-G appreciate Tornadus-T’s ability to get them in safely on specially defensive walls like Chansey and Defensive Heatran that like to switch in on Tornadus.
  • Hazard setters like Toxic Spikes Toxapex and Stealth Rock Mega Tyranitar make excellent partners, as they can help chip down threats like Chansey that Tornadus-T has trouble breaking through. Spikes users like Greninja and Ferrothorn are also good options.
  • Electric-checks such as Garchomp and Chansey alleviate Tornadus-T’s inability to meaningfully pressure threats like Rotom-H and Zapdos and as such make good partners

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Assault Vest is an option to take advantage of Regenerator and Tornadus-T’s good bulk, but the fact that it disallows Defog, a significant chunk of its utility and Tornadus-T’s ability to punish threats like Medicham and Kartana means that it’s generally a suboptimal option.
  • Life Orb can be used to augment Tornadus-T’s power, but it cuts very hard into the longevity provided by Regenerator and is generally less useful than the items listed on the set.
  • Additionally, Superpower can be used with Life Orb and a Naive nature to deal with specially defensive threats like Chansey, Heatran, and Mega Tyranitar, but its very inconsistent and suffers from the longevity problem of Life Orb as well.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-types**: Electric types such as Rotom-Wash and Rotom-Heat can switch into any move Tornadus-T has and use Tornadus-T as setup fodder or an opportunity to grab momentum with Volt Switch. Zapdos in particular can switch into any move Tornadus-T uses and use Roost to heal off the damage and even threatens Tornadus-T away from using U-turn by threatening paralysis with Static. Knock Off removing their items can leave them vulnerable to being worn down, however.

**Faster Offensive Threats**: Threats like Ash-Greninja and Choice Scarf Darmanitan-G cannot switch-in, but they can force it out in a 1v1 scenario with the threat of their powerful moves.

**Specially Defensive Hazard Setters**: Sturdier Stealth Rock setters like Chansey, Heatran, and Mega Tyranitar can always keep hazards on the field versus Tornadus-T, as they can easily shrug off any move it has. They should be wary of Tornadus-T potentially pivoting into a threatening wallbreaker with U-Turn, or having their item removed via Knock Off, or even being hit with a supereffective Z-move.

**Steel-types**: Bulkier Steel-types such as Mega Metagross and Melmetal can switch-in to Hurricane and force it out with the threat of their powerful moves, but they can be chipped down and KOed by Z-Hurricane or Heat Wave, though. Magearna is an especially potent example, as Assault Vest sets can use Tornadus-T as a means to get momentum with Volt Switch, and other sets can use Tornadus-T as a chance to setup and boost its stats, but Assault Vest variants should be wary of Knock Off, while Heat Wave can be annoying for more setup sets.

  • Knock Off is a great utility move, able to cripple common switch-ins to Hurricane like Chansey by removing their items, but because Heat Wave pressures common threats that switch-in to Tornadus-T such as Aegislash and Magearna better, it is the preferred option ("switch in", when used as a verb, isn't hyphenated).
  • U-Turn uses Tornadus-T’s ability to switch-in to and force out Pokéemon vulnerable to it like Kartana and unboosted Volcarona to grab momentum as the opponent switches out (this is nitpicky, but technically according to Smogon standards, you shouldn't put the accent over the e in "Pokemon" in analyses).

  • However, none of Tornadus-T's stats are truly exceptional, leaving it vulnerable to being muscled past against faster, more offensive threats like Mega Metagross, as well as bulkier foes like Zygarde and Magearna. • Tornadus-T's high Speed, decent Special Attack, and access to Regenerator set it apart from other pivots in the metagame.
  • Additionally, Tornadus-T’s pure Flying-type is solid both offensively and defensively, allowing it to check prominent metagame threats like Kartana and Mega Medicham. Mention that its STAB is somewhat spammable thanks to the lack of Flying resists in the tier, which are circumvented by coverage (such as Aegi being Heat Waved or Ttar eating Focus Blast).
  • You have not mentioned U-turn OR Knock Off in this overview, which turns Torn-T into an excellent crippler and momentum gainer. They should be mentioned here.
  • However, none of Tornadus-T's stats are truly exceptional, leaving it vulnerable to being muscled past against bulkier, offensive threats like Mega Metagross and Rotom-H

Set Description
========
  • Knock Off is a great utility move, able to cripple common switch-ins to Hurricane like Chansey by removing their items, but because Heat Wave pressures common threats that can switch-in to Hurricane such as Aegislash and Magearna better, it is the preferred option.
  • U-Turn uses Tornadus-T’s ability to switch-in to and force out Pokémon vulnerable to it like Kartana, Tangrowth, and unboosted Volcarona to grab momentum as the opponent switches out.
  • Sky Plate grants Tornadus-T the ability to break through less sturdy walls like Clefable and Mega Sableye with Hurricane, but Flyinium Z is good as well for a one time nuke on dangerous threats such as Swords Dance Kartana.

Usage Tips
========

========
  • Strong wallbreakers like Mega Metagross and Kartana sets appreciate Tornadus-T’s ability to get them in safely on specially defensive walls. Both are notable for taking advantage of Chansey, Mega Tyranitar, and Heatran, common switch-ins to Tornadus-T.

Other Options
=============

  • Assault Vest is an option to take advantage of Regenerator and Tornadus-T’s good bulk, but the fact it disallows Defog, a significant chunk of its utility, means that it’s generally a suboptimal option. It also makes it way worse as a Kart/MMedi check, which is its primary role on a team.

===================

Reorder this to Electrics -> Steels -> SpDef Hazards -> Fast Offensive Threats

**Zapdos**: Zapdos can switch into any move Tornadus-T uses and use Roost to heal off the damage and even threatens Tornadus-T using U-turn by threatening paralysis with Static. It should be wary of having its Heavy Duty Boots or Leftovers being removed via Knock Off, however. Rename this to “Electric-types“ and mention Heattom and even Washtom.

**Faster Offensive Threats**: Threats like Ice Beam Greninja and Weavile cannot switch-in, but they can force it out in a 1v1 scenario with the threat of their powerful moves. Scarf GDarm should be mentioned.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Mega Metagross and Melmetal can switch-in to Hurricane and force it out with the threat of their powerful moves. Magearna is an especially potent example, as Assault Vest sets can use Tornadus-T as a means to get momentum with Volt Switch, and other sets can use Tornadus-T as a chance to setup and boost its stats. Mention they should be wary of Z-Moves, and in AV Mage’s case, Knock Off.
