Touhou/shmup general discussion thread

I've been almost obsessed with these games lately. Because once you get good at these nothing else feels challenging anymore. Yeah, these can get stupid hard sometimes.

the real joke is that this is the easiest stage 9 card in shoot the bullet
So much fun and it feels awesome when you finally get that achievement you've been after for so long.

Anyone else play games like these? If you don't, try them out, it's really worth it.

I thought a thread like this will never come, I play Touhou daily to brush up my skills, I've beaten PCB and IN with one continue, although I'm having trouble with Ten Desires even though it's quite easy...

Mac here so I can only play IN and I'm pretty terrible at it ;_; can barely beat normal with 3 lives but I still find the game enjoyable as it gives me a distraction to p much everything else as I have to focus all my attention on the game lest I die =<

i spent sooo much time playin STB that i dont even know. DS was really fun too! Unlocked EX in STB and unlocked Hatate in DS then kinda just dropped both games.

i like playin the normal touhou games but i generally dont bother myself too much with 1CCs and stuff. i have 1cc'd normal IN/MOF and... Faily Wars? And SA. I dunno, i dont really keep much track of that anymore lol

I loved 10D and hated it at the same time because I was hyped for Youmu and then she turned out to be a terribad character. I think my favourite is probably either SA or IN, because lolco-op. Reimu/GapTroll is the funniest combo, story-wise.

Also STB and DT were amazing. I loved the focus on taking pictures of dmk and less on killing your opponent. Unfortunately, because I have grandfathered myself the idea of "DESTROY EVERYTHING COLLECT EVERY POWERUP", I didn't do too well.

I also managed to get a hold of a PC-98 emulator at school, and so I've been working through LLS and PoDD (Lotus Land Story and Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream for the Windows-only people). It's good to know where Bad Apple!! finally comes from.

For those who are interesting and only getting into the game; I would not be too bothered by GAME OVERing on the first few levels of easy. These games are nothing like you've ever experienced. Also, don't be too bothered about shooting and killing everything and getting powerups. The longer you survive the better, and anything you get now won't necessarily advance that goal, especially if it puts you at risk. Another thing is; don't be stingy with your bombs. Obviously save one or two for the final boss, but if you are able to tell when you're seriously fucked up, go right ahead. It's better to use your bombs then die on the boss than die now and have two wasted bombs on a lost life. Finally, grazing bullets might give you nuts-ass score multipliers, but if you aren't good at it, and you don't think you can do it, nobody is going to call you a coward for hiding in a blind spot instead.
In this game, time spent being alive is the largest co-efficient to your score.

One last thing- the OP's screenshot is nubcakes level. Try Lunatic Eirin's Final Spellcard. That shit is literally impossible to do without either bombing or dying. And the best thing is, during the bomb/post-death invincibility, the TIMER IS STOPPED. Because FUCK YOU.

i love these games but i dont play them too much

i 1cc'd mountain of faith on lunatic a few years ago, and when i was in japan i played hella mushihimesama. my favourite shmup is strikers 1945 +. not bullet hell but still extremely challenging. i think it's a reimagining of world war two only one of the sides was in fact secretly manipulated by a giant alien cephalopod. it was the only shmup at my local arcade so i'd always head down there after class and empty my pockets.

I played a lot of Touhou a couple years ago but stopped when I realized I was cheating at 30 fps (bad computer). I should download them again now I have a better one.

I have always liked shmups, specially ones with a decent amount of difficulty. I recomend View Point for the NeoGeo if you want a non-damaku still hard as fuck shooter. Other titles I enjoy are Gradius, R-Type, Sonic Wings, Giga Wing, Varth... no really, I will try whatever shooter is avaiable, even oddballs as Captain Tomaday.

love these games so much, recently got back into them.

the only game ive 1cc'd on lunatic was TD (with multiple characters), and almost on UFO, but shou makes me rage so much.

posted a replay of a (shitty imo) UFO extra clear: http://replays.gensokyo.org/

kay

Yeah, I know that one in the pic is easy. Shouldn't be hiding stuff in this color, I guess.

Also, I've been playing a lot of Marine Benefit (a Touhou fangame) lately. Some really imaginative stuff in that game. It does have a few bad moments and some of the shottypes suck, but it's definitely worth a try. (For some idea of the creativity involved, see the extra boss here).

You should try IN (Imperishable Night) since it's really easy for beginners.

What a shot to my confidence, I can't beat it.

Not to say it's not fun though! I plan on beating it occasionally, and I play Hisoutensoku (the fighting game one) with SDS every once in a while, so if anyone would like to get in a few rounds, I'm down.

i fucking love you so much man

still not really finished with ten desires, 1ccing it on normal was easy but I have yet to beat it on Extra/Hard which is what I usually do (except for UFO and SA).

also butterfly dream pill and lunar incense are easier than mysterium j/s

outside of touhou, anybody heard of the DoDonPachi series? A little easier with what is slightly better graphics (as far as shmups go).
iirc there are only arcade versions but you can probably find a translated PC port floating the internet somewhere. Otherwise it's on the App Store.

If you're tired of little girls blowing your ass to smithereens, try larger, robot girls blowing your ass to smithereens. What's good about DoDonPachi is that the player character naturally switches between styles as you play, depending on how much you either kill shit or graze bullets.
It's a little calmer than Touhou, and there's a nice change in the mechanics. Slightly more varied, which is what gives it a fresh edge.

my keyboard has this weird logging issue where if you are holding down another key, than down and left/right won't work simultaneously, making these games pretty much fucking impossible until I get another one with better keystrokes i guess.

i still got to youmu in pcb this one time on hard. :>

i tried to play these at alper(?)'s recommendation and was like holy shit

i'm awful but they are really cool for the discipline they inspire with all this hectic shit going on

not quite on this level at all, but playing through it reminded me of the genre: did anyone pick up jamestown over the christmas steam sale? a kinda much easier touhou-style shooter based on a reinvention of the whole john carter of mars saga
