evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Toxtricity’s Punk Rock-boosted sound moves, access to Shift Gear, and unique defensive typing are just enough to give it a limited niche as an incredibly hard to switch into threat for defensive teams while tackling offensive teams with its boosted Speed. Most typical Electric-type checks can't handle the raw power of Punk Rock-boosted Boomburst, dealing near-lethal damage to Rotom formes and Quagsire. Toxtricity's Electric / Poison typing also gives it a slew of useful resistances against Grass, Steel, Poison, Flying, Fighting, and more, allowing it to be one of precious few offensive Togekiss checks while also letting it tank hits from defensive Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Corviknight. Shift Gear isn't even a requirement early on, as oftentimes just clicking Boomburst and sizing up your opponent is enough. That said, a free turn can turn Toxtricity into a massive threat for more offensive teams. Use Shift Gear on a defensive Pokemon or with dual screens support and turn Toxtricity from a middling-Speed wrecking ball into a team-cleaning screaming machine. Notably, Toxtricity doesn't need to use up the match's Dynamax to do work, saving the boost for another teammate most games.

Boomburst and Overdrive are your main sources of damage, shredding through frailer foes and 2HKOing everything that doesn’t resist both. Do keep in mind that even after Overdrive's STAB boost, Boomburst is still its most powerful move. Sadly, there are major limitations to Electric / Normal as coverage, and Toxtricity can’t cover the rest of what it needs in one move. Fire Punch can 2HKO Ferrothorn and Excadrill, punishing any switch-ins hard. Snarl, boosted to a usable power by Punk Rock, lets Toxtricity handle Dragapult, deal with Galarian Corsola without risking a Cursed Body activation, and cushion the occasional otherwise fatal blow. Hex is only slightly weaker and can be used as a perfectly accurate alternative if not using Throat Spray or the Special Attack drops aren’t seen as majorly beneficial. Drain Punch trades a slightly less effective hit on Ferrothorn for a devastating blow to Tyranitar, 2HKOing bulkier builds and possibly OHKOing frailer builds after Stealth Rock; however, be cautious of feeding a healthy Tyranitar Weakness Policy boosts. Sludge Wave doesn’t hit many relevant threats harder than Boomburst or Overdrive, but it gives Toxtricity Max Ooze's Special Attack boosts and a way to touch the odd Soundproof Kommo-o. Max Special Attack and Speed investment are used to hit as hard as possible and, at +2 Speed, avoid revenge kills from positive Speed-natured Choice Scarf users with up to 100 base Speed. Switch to a Modest nature and move the Attack investment to HP if not using Fire Punch or Drain Punch. An alternative spread of 108 Atk / 236 SpA / 164 Spe can be used as well to ensure a KO on Excadrill after a Shift Gear while also outspeeding Choice Scarf variants. Life Orb is used for its immediate damage output. Throat Spray can also be used to circumvent the item clause and give Toxtricity a boosting item that won't wear it down as quickly.

Screens are massively helpful for a comfortable sweep through the opponent’s team. Grimmsnarl brings Prankster screens and is a wonderful check to one of Toxtricity's main pains in Dragapult. Toxtricity defeats Pokemon like Corviknight and Toxapex; Pokemon that benefit off having those tanky threats removed, especially ones that can also set up under similar screens support, make for great partners. Mimikyu, Dragon Dance users such as Gyarados, Dragapult, and Haxorus, and almost any physical attacker plagued by those Pokemon can make for a good ally. Toxtricity will attract Excadrill out frequently, so partners that can deal with it, such as Gyarados, Corviknight, and Cloyster, are welcomed.

Some notes:

  • This Pokemon wasn't on the reservation list at all, but I've had it do enough work for me that I thought it was worth a preview. I ran it by a member of qc quickly on discord to make sure this was okay to post.
  • This thing faces huge contention from the Rotom forms since they're so much more flexible / overall better most of the time. I tried to sell Toxtricity as a niche set up sweeper with limited use that can work on some teams (Electric-type with set up not totally made of paper that doesn't need to dynamax to do work is a nice niche I've enjoyed). I'm not certain how well it reads for that, so I can dial up the "this pokemon is niche" aspect of the analysis if requested.
  • I didn’t bother making a specs or four attacks set. I haven’t tested them, but I can’t imagine it going well when you rely on normal / electric coverage and Mimikyu / Dracopult / Excadrill are top tier Pokémon.

Not sure I'm sold on the Shift Gear set, Toxtricity's coverage is too poor to be using as a setup move, as a check like Excadrill drains your momentum way too much. Have you considered the AV set with Nuzzle? I've seen people use that pretty well, where it can straight up beat the Pokemon its meant to beat while crippling others checks, such as Dragapult. Still doesn't help much vs Excadrill, but frankly any team that has Excadrill I just wouldn't bring Toxtricity ever against them.

I actually have a lot to say about Toxtricity, as its one of the few successes I've had while mutilating my sand team to have a better stall match up.

The set itself.

I got a few changes to suggest here, here's how I'd order the set

[SET]
name: Shift Gear
move 1: Shift Gear
move 2: Boomburst
move 3: Overdrive
move 4: Fire Punch / Snarl / Drain Punch / Sludge Wave
item: Life Orb / Throat Spray
ability: Punk Rock
nature: Rash / Modest
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

So, here's my reasons for the changes.

-I think Fire Punch should be the primary slash. Even without a boost, it does a LOT to Excadrill switch-ins, which is wonderful because thats a lot of bulkier team's best shot at beating Excadrill. Predicting a switch in and Fire Punching then scurrying off gives you a nice opening for a sweep later. It also hits Ferrothorn hard, which I feel is an important selling point for Toxtricity (more on that later!)

-I slash in Drain Punch. While I don't think its quite as good as Fire Punch since Ferrothorn doesnt take a whole lot of damage from it, it does severely punish Tyranitar switch ins, which I think is worth a slash in. Just note though, against a healthy Tyranitar, its risky because even though it normally OHKOs after a boost, Tyranitar can take advantage of it with Dynamax + Weakness Policy!

-I think Life Orb should be the primary slash in, since it helps a lot with immediately stall breaking stuff. For example, LO Boomburst has over a 90% chance of OHKOing Quagsire after Stealth Rock damage. Throat Spray is neat for sweeping when Toxtricity is up against a mon that can't hurt it that much though.

For the rest of the preview

-I think something good to emphasize here is that Toxtricity is really hard to switch into for most defensive teams, as the traditional checks to Electric-types, Ground-types, usually take MASSIVE damage from Boomburst. In fact, this is the big selling point over Rotom formes Toxtricity has, its really hard to switch into because Boomburst blasts so many comnmon Electric-type checks hard.

-I think you should mention that immeditly setting up Shift Gear isn't always the right choice, sometimes its better to just hit the expected switch-in as hard as possible to soften them up.

-An alternate EV spread worth mentioning is 108 Atk / 236 SpA / 164 Spe Rash. This lets you outspeed up to Choice Scarf Excadrill, and OHKO it with Life Orb boosted Fire Punch after Stealth Rock damage (just watch out for Dynamax). It also has the bonus of actually letting you OHKO Dragapult with a boosted Throat Chop, if you choose to use that.

-Not sure I'd mention Duraludon for the screens support, never really seen them run that. However, not only is Grimmsnarl good, it also has a good match up against a lot of Dragapult sets, which is awesome for a Toxtricity teammate.

Impement this stuff, and I'll give it QC approved 1/2!

Implemented all of Theorymon's changes. Added a fair bit at the role description at the front selling just how hard Boomburst hits. Also added Cloyster as a nice partner too; I've had a lot of success with Dual Screens Toxtricity + Cloyster as a werid offense core.

Ready for the next check.

add a mention of how this is like the only offensive check to togekiss in the game (probably the biggest draw card to using it) and i’ll consider this 2/2

AV set that is gaining popularity (and IMO already better than shift gear) The blog has it as the following.
Evs: 64HP / 4 Def / 172 SpA+ / 12 SpD / 252 Spe
Moves: Overdrive / Boomburst / Nuzzle / Hex

Solerme and I personally drop the speed to 132, reaching 112 to outspeed dragapult when paralyzed. I put the investment instead into greater bulk. Logic behind this is to outspeed timid Charizard at +1, but tbh I wouldn't even be nuzzling here anyways, just overdriving since nuzzle --> overdrive doesn't even kill.

Pardon the wait! Implemented what was needed for the second check.

I haven't played much with anything AV yet, but I'll try and give it a try in the near future. For the preview at least, I'm only really confident writing the SG set for now since I have a decent amount of experience with it. I suppose whenever it's time for the full analysis, this can get checked and added.

I took the liberty of writing the AV Toxtricity writeup for ya, feel free to add this to the set before it gets GPed. Considering Nouthuca only has AV right now listed (and it did quite well in S1) and no shift gear sets, I think it would be more representative to include this set as one of the sets alongside Shift Gear.

[SET]

move 2: Boomburst
move 3: Nuzzle
move 4: Hex
item: Assault Vest
ability: Punk Rock

evs: 180HP / 4 Def / 172 SpA / 4 SpD / 148 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Toxtricity with an Assault Vest becomes a specially defensive specialist, while also gaining the ability to 1 vs 1 much of the metagame through powerful attacks in combination with Paralysis. With added investment to HP and the Special Defense boost from its item, Toxtricity is able to soundly defeat or cripple Togekiss in its Dynamax form, its main niche, provided it has not had the chance to accumulate more than one Nasty Plot boost.

Overdrive alongside Boomburst are Toxtricity's primary attacking options. With its unique ability in Punk Rock, which grants a 30% boost in base power, Toxtricity deals significant damage to targets that do not resist it. Overdrive allows Toxtricity to fulfill its primary role as a Togekiss/Charizard check, while also being useful against the likes of Corviknight and Toxapex. Boomburst, on the other hand, helps defeat Pokemon such as Quagsire and Gastrodon, who don't mind switching into Electric, and has a slightly higher base damage output at neutral.

Nuzzle allows Toxtricity to provide small chip while break Focus Sash users, all at 100% accuracy. In combination with Hex, which doubles its power when an opponent has a major status, Toxtricity can safely beat all common Mimikyu and Dragapult sets, or force them to Dynamax at a potentially unfavorable position.

The given EVs maximize Toxtricity's bulk while ensuring that Toxtricity can outspeed both standard Dragapult and Togekiss following Max Airstream if paralyzed, helping it defeat them in a 1 vs 1 scenario. More speed investment can be used to outspeed even faster threats, such as Charizard at +1 speed, while sacrificing some of its bulk.

While this brand of Toxtricity does fantastically against much of the metagame, it is prone to being worn down and is safely checked by Excadrill. Checks to physical attackers, particularly ones that carry Earthquake, such as Excadrill, Tyranitar, Rhyperior, and Snorlax are welcome. Examples of good defensive partners include physical walls such as Quagsire, Corsola, or Gastrodon. Offensively, Toxtricity pairs well with physical sweeper Pokemon that dislike Corviknight and Toxapex, and can help enable the likes of Haxorus, Mimikyu, or physical Dragapult to perform a sweep.

Punk rock is 30% increase, not 50%. Are you sure a Poison STAB move doesn't need a slash anywhere? Also, why are the items not Assault Vest for the Assault Vest set lol?

For AV, I think its better if we make it a seperate thread, since this analysis is almost entirely done already.
