malva.png

Name: Malva
Effect: User's Fire type Pokemon take damage as if they're a pure Dark Type
Description: This ability is based on the fact that as well as being the Fire-Type Elite 4 Member of Kalos, she was also part of the villainous Team Flare. This ability can help (certain Pokemon like Blaziken and Ceruledge benefit from being defensively taken as dark types) as well as hinder (you're now weak to bug types, as an example). (resub)

Akihabara.png

Name: Dr. Akihabara
Effect: On switch-in, user's Pokemon's Defense or Sp. Def is raised 1 stage based on the foes' stronger Attack stat. Once per battle.
Description: Dr. Akihabara is a character of the day that is famous (or rather infamous) for his Porygon. Download is a Porygon ability, so why not make it defensive (thematically akin to a firewall

Name: Lisia
Effect: All signature moves used by mons on your team gain 1.2x power
Description: As the representative of contests, I felt it would make sense for her to encourage mons to show off their "signatures". This can be the extra boost that mons like Latios/Latias, Skeledirge, Quaquaval, and Ceruledge need to become fully OU threats, as well as buffing existing mons like Pecharunt.

1745344216704.png

Name: Tate and Liza
Effect: All moves with the word "wish" in them gain +1 priority
Description: One of Tate's partners in Pokemon Masters is Jirachi, a Pokemon thematically tied to wishes. Buffs wish cores for bulkier teams by making it easier to fire them off even if KOd, while allowing HO structures which use healing wish to be able to run an item that isn't custap berry on their Hatterene

thorton.png

Name: Thorton
Effect: Your moves with 60 bp or less have 1.3x power.
Description: Thorton is the frontier brain in the battle factory under the title of Factory Head. Factory Head sounds like someone who deals with technology which Technician kind of vibes with. Thorton boosts priority moves as the main one but also incentivizing other weaker moves.

roxanne.png

Name: Roxanne
Effect: Your Rock-type moves have 1.2x power and accuracy.
Description: Roxanne is a basic rock trainer with a basic rock benefit. Boosting the effectiveness of your Rock moves is very helpful in boosting Rock coverage and/or stabs.

diantha.png

Name: Diantha
Effect: Your non-Normal-types have their Normal-type moves become Fairy-type and deal 1.1x damage. Doesn't affect Rapid Spin.
Description: Gives certain mons better stabs but also provides fairy coverage to every mon in the form of Facade (Body Slam and D-Edge are also common moves that are even better coverage). Doesn't affect Rapid Spin to prevent the hazard game from crumbling into dust.

1745358197491.png

Name: Roxie
Effect: Sound moves do an additional 1.2x damage.
Description: She is in a band! I know she doesn't actually speak intelligible words in the game but I always thought she sounded a bit like Joan Jett for some reason. I like this idea because I think sound moves are cool and buff cool Pokemon! Maybe we'll see specs boomburst Noivern.

1745358183952.png

Name: Koga
Effect: Damage taken from poison types is halved, and his Pokemon have a 33% (shed skin) chance to be cured of the poison ailment at the end of every turn.
Description: He's the poison guy. Tried to do something defensive here. All of his Pokemon basically have toxic so it would make sense for them to "resist" both the poison effect and the moves.

1745358149089.png

Name: Brock
Effect: All rock type Pokemon gain the ability Sturdy passively in addition to whatever ability they are actually using.
Description: His name is B Rock. Something something hard as a rock. I don't even like this idea I just wanted to have three submissions.

Hmmm, those two are right, I better play it defensively....

Name: Unnamed Hex Maniac
Effect: No...You're not the one: The Ghost-type version of Curse only takes a quarter of the user's HP.
Justification: No...you're not the one.

Name: Lillie
Effect: Cosmic Eclipse: Blocks the added effects of attacks on your Pokémon.
Justification: This ability is designed to combine the effects of Full Metal Body and Shadow Shield, as Lillie's main partner, Nebby, canonically becomes either a Solgaleo or a Lunala.
Rich Boy Liam
Name: Rich Boy Liam
Effect: Throwing Your Fortune Away: Fling can no longer be used twice in a row, but it also doesn't consume the item it flings.
Justification: Rich Boy Liam has a Blissey that uses Fling to throw a Rare Candy, so this ability is designed to make the move slightly viable.

Akihabara.png

Name: Dr. Akihabara
Effect: On switch-in, user's Pokemon's Defense or Sp. Def is raised 1 stage based on the foes' stronger Attack stat.
Description: Dr. Akihabara is a character of the day that is famous (or rather infamous) for his Porygon. Download is a Porygon ability, so why not make it defensive (thematically akin to a firewall or similar).

640px-Nurse_Joy.png

Name: Nurse Joy
Effect: User's Pokemon have their statuses healed when swapped out (Natural Cure effect).
Description: Nurse Joy is, well, a nurse, and her main Pokemon is Chansey, which can know Natural Cure.
Dr. Akihabara: Defensive Download on every single one of your mons if far too much of a defensive benefit. Please nerf to once per game or some other downside or this is vetoed.
Nurse Joy: Natural Cure on every mon is too powerful. This is vetoed for being far to potent at removing any progress status spam teams can do, especially since Miriam exists that would be stamped out by this trainer.

Name: Unnamed Hex Maniac
Effect: No...You're not the one: The Ghost-type version of Curse no longer consumes any HP and traps any Pokémon that it curses.
Justification: No...you're not the one.

Name: Lillie
Effect: Cosmic Eclipse: While a friendly Pokémon is at full HP, it is immune to all effects except for damage.
Justification: This ability is designed to combine the effects of Full Metal Body and Shadow Shield, as Lillie's main partner, Nebby, canonically becomes either a Solgaleo or a Lunala.
Hex Maniac: Uhhh, no. This is vetoed as allowing your Ghost-types to both trap and not lose Hp from using Curse is too much. 1/4 chip each turn with no downside is far too much. Restrict the ability to a far less potent effect. Only not losing Hp is still too powerful of an effect. I would recommend keeping the trapping effect (or don't) and add some other benefit to it.
Lillie: Please explain what is all included in "all effects except for damage" or else this will be vetoed. This doesn't mean anything specifically and needs clearer explanation. If this includes status moves, it seems too much. If this only includes stat drops and secondary effects, it seems too weak. I would recommend making it a weaker effect (such as perma-shield dust) and make it always active (not Gale Wings condition).

Voting Time
Time for voting has started. I'm late on opening voting because I had a lot going on (including a dentist appointment). No subs remain vetoed. All other subs can be voted for.
Here are the rules for voting. Voting closes tomorrow.

Voting
  • You vote for your favorite 5 trainers.
  • Order doesn't matter.
  • Only one self-vote is allowed.

  • If we don't get enough submissions, they might change.

Winners
1745430727767.png

Name: Sidney
Effect: The player’s Pokémon will bounce back stat-reducing effects akin to Mirror Armor. Does not apply to Octolock.
Justification: Sidney is that one Elite Four member that don’t play nice with stat reducing moves such as Cotton Spore and Sand Attack to give misery to the player that refuses to switch their one strong Pokémon out of pride.
Description: Provide walls and tanks ways to punish stat-reducing strategies such as Intimidate, Fire Lash, Sticky Web, Memento, Parting Shot and opposing Trainer effects that reduce the player Pokémon’s stat.
Biggest Benefactors: Walls, stall team in general, offensivw team that dislike dealing with Sticky Web.

Description: Roxanne is a basic rock trainer with a basic rock benefit. Boosting the effectiveness of your Rock moves is very helpful in boosting Rock coverage and/or stabs.

1745946297116.png

Name: Lt. Surge
Effect: Opposing Pokémon wearing Heavy Duty Boots take half damage from Spikes, rather than no damage.
Description: The former soldier has an effect themed around combat boots. Naturally benefits bulkier hazard stacking teams which are less reliant on their knock off user for removing boots and can therefore generate chip faster and easier.
1745947503764.png

Name: Jacq
Effect: Your opponent's priority moves deal 0.7x damage
Description: Jacq's ace and link pair in Pokémon Masters is Farigiraf, a pokémon that has an ability that nullifies priority. This is a boon particularly on more hyper offensive teams which can afford to go without priority, indirectly buffing inconcistent priority weak sweepers like Maushold without the need for psychic terrain, as well as would be Gambit/Bolt checks or counters which can more easily take their Thunderclaps and Sucker Punches.

avery.png

Name: Avery
Effect: First Pokemon out sets up Psychic Terrain for 5 turns.
Description: In the third battle with him, he cheats by setting up Psychic Terrain before battle in order to try and get a one up on the player character. Good synergy for Psysurge teams and for any Pokemon that don't like playing with priority.

Miror_B.png

Name: Miror B
Effect: All Pokemon have Dancer alongside their normal ability.
Description: My man cares more about dance than most things. Makes people think twice before setting up with Swords Dance or similar.

Colo_Ein.png

Name: Ein
Effect: Electric moves (Except Zap Cannon and Bolt Strike [which wouldn't be in OU anyway but putting it just in case]) used by the user have 100% Accuracy.
Description: Ein's strategy involves using Rain Dance alongside Pokemon that know Thunder. Him setting rain didn't seem right to me, so turning all (most) electric moves into Thunder under Rain was my next best idea

The Fiery Improviser
Name: Flint
Effect: The player’s Pokémon have Fire-type move with 75 BP or lower having power increased by 1.5x, and Will-o-Wisp never misses. Have effect after the Ability Technician but before other move-boosting Abilities like Strong Jaw, although Technician applies to Fire-type moves that still have 60 BP or lower after the Trainer Support taking effect. Temper Flare is not boosted by this Trainer Support if the user’s previous move missed.
Examples of Base Power After the Boost:
  • 75 BP -> 112.5 BP, with Iron Fist taking effect making exactly 135 BP.
  • 70 BP -> 105 BP
  • 65 BP -> 97.5 BP, with Strong Jaw effect making 146.3 BP rounded up in case of Fire Fang!
  • 60 BP -> 90 BP
  • 35 BP -> 52.5 BP, thus Technician takes effect -> 78.6 BP rounded up
Justification: Flint is infamous for being a Fire-type Elite Four but only have two non-special Fire-type Pokémon that are in the Diamond / Pearl PokéDex, but all of his Pokémon have one different Fire-type move to compensate. More specifically, Drifblim have Will-o-Wisp, Lopunny have Fire Punch and Steelix have Fire Fang.
Description: Turn moves like Fire Punch / Temper Flare, Mystical Fire, Burning Jealousy, and even Fire Fang into much more useful STAB or even Fire-type coverage, as these moves haven’t seen much use otherwise because of their lower than average Base Power with no beneficial compensation.
Biggest Benefactors: Physical Fire-type Pokémon that dislike using Flare Blitz such as Flareon or Infernape, Pokémon that struggles with Steel-type and stuck with the aforementioned moves as coverage such as Ambipom or Muk, and Special Fire-type Pokémon that learn Mystical Fire such as Magmortar or Armarouge.
1745948177589.png

The Surfin’ Fighter
Name: Brawly
Effect: The player’s Special Water-type moves becomes Physical, and gain 1.2x power.
Examples of Base Power After the Boost:
  • 150 BP -> 180 BP
  • 110 BP -> 132 BP
  • 90 BP -> 108 BP
  • 80 BP -> 96 BP, then 124.8 BP via Sheer Force in case of Scald
  • Pre-Boosted Brine: 65 BP -> 78 BP
  • Boosted Brine: 130 BP -> 156 BP
Justification: Brawly is your typical Fighting-type specialist with only Physical Fighting-type Pokémon, which make sense back then since the physical/special split have yet to happen until Diamond and Pearl. What makes him interesting, however, is the fact that he is also a surfer, with the anime in particular having a Hariyama surfing alongside him.
Description: Turn Hydro Pump, Surf and even Brine as valid Water-type coverage, or give a big boost to Physical Water-type that fell off the line due to the exesssive power creep done in Scarlet + Violet. While Hydro Cannon’s downside is still too severe to run consistently, it can be a helpful nuke button for physical Greninja, Samurott (both normal or Hisuian), Feraligatr, or Swampert.
Biggest Benefactors: Physical Water-type Pokémon such as Swampert, Gyarados or Feraligatr, physical Pokémon with access to Surf, Hydro Pump or in Hariyama’s case, Brine.
1745949304836.png

The Wrestler of the Waves
Name: Crusher Wake
Effect: The player’s Fighting-type moves uses the Pokémon’s higher Attack or Special Attack and, if their Pokémon’s target moved first or just switched in, Focus Blast bypasses the accuracy check.
Justification: Crusher Wake is like the opposite of Brawly above; he is a Water-type specialist, but is also a wrestler, a job that can be associated with Fighting-type due to the brawling, even if scripted, nature of it. He is also introduced in the game that introduces not only the physical/special split, but also both Focus Blast and Aura Sphere, the latter being a non-missing Special Fighting-type move. Focus Blast is also the only Fighting-type move that Crusher Wake uses for his Pokémon in rematches of his debut titles, as well as one of his moves in the Pokémon World Tournament of B2W2, hence an additional effect to that move.
Description: Makes Fighting-type coverage more versatile, by not only making Close Combat usable for high Special Attack Pokémon that don’t like using Focus Blast, but also make Focus Blast itself a viable move for usually slow Pokémon by never worring about it’s shaky accuracy.
Biggest Benefactors: Slow Fighting-type Pokémon such as Machamp and Conkeldurr that dislikes the Defense and Special Defense drop of Close Combat, the special-oriented and fast Keldeo so it can take advantage of Close Combat instead of Focus Blast, and non-Fighting slow Pokémon that learns Focus Blast as their more consistent Fighting-type coverage.

Mina.png

Name: Mina
Effect: Your Pokemon are immune to the secondary effects of moves. Your Pokemon can't have their Speed lowered by opposing Pokemon.
Description: Mina's ace is a Ribombee with the ability Shield Dust which is famous for its access to Sticky Web (she doesn't use it since its her ace, but Ribombee does get it). Shield Dust is a cool but underrated ability that is stuck on weak pokemon. Covert Cloak is cool but its hard to justify it over things like Leftovers or HDB. Trainers have generally weaker effects, allowing Mina to shine as the perfect place for a more effective Shield Dust outlet.

Giovanni.png

Name: Giovanni
Effect: When your Pokemon directly KO a Pokemon, raise their lowest stat by 1. Once per switch in.
Description: Giovanni is a mafia boss and therefore is known for stealing. The flavor of the ability is you steal from the Pokemon you KO and shore up your weaknesses. Giovanni provides your team with Beast Boost but boosts your weakest stat rather than strongest stat. This can be useful as it can boost your frail mon's defenses or a slow, bulky mon's speed which can help allow it to last a bit longer. Unless you are running a very strange mixed attacker or a defensive mon, you aren't going to boost any relevant offenses. Limited to once per switch in to limit its power on pixie like stat spreads.

Brycen Man.png

Name: Brycen-Man
Effect: When your Pokemon are hit by a Contact move, if they don't have a held item and the attacker does, they steal it. Your moves have 1.1x accuracy.
Description: Brycen-Man is a dastardly villain with a Honchkrow with Thief, a Scrafty with Wide Lens, and a Pawniard with Aerial Ace. Brycen-Man allows you to overcome the ill effects of Knock Off as well as incentives the use of single use items such as Eject Pack, Air Balloon, and Power Herb. It also adds on the side benefit of making your moves a tiny bit more accurate.

1745981390892.png

Name: Skyla
Effect: If a flying type Pokemon uses a flying type move, it gains a 1.1x increase to its speed for that turn only. All flying type status moves used by flying type Pokemon gain +1 priority.
Description: Skyla is all about speed given that she is a jet fighter. Flying type status priority is neat with defog and roost, but I'm not sure if she would ever see usage with just that. Giving her Pokemon a speed boost makes sense given her lore, but I think giving a flat 1.1x speed increase when NOT clicking flying type moves is too strong on certain Pokemon like dragonite or gliscor.

1745981544189.png

Name: Shauntal
Effect: Ghost type Pokemon do not take any recoil damage from Life Orb
Description: They're ghosts. They are not alive. Checkmate. I also like Shauntal because that's my ps sprite.

1745981752937.png

Name: Will
Effect: Future Sight is a guaranteed crit move. The move "Psychic" also is buffed to 100bp.
Description: In his original form he clicks psychic and future sight alot. I think buffing future sight is funny because it's 80bp 90 accuracy non-STAB move in gen 2 and he clicks it anyway in GSC. Let the man click an even better future sight!

I wasn't expecting two free slates in a row, but I'll take what I got!

Name: Lear
Effect: Follow My Lead!: At the end of each turn, if a friendly Pokémon is holding an item, it recovers 1/32nd of it's HP. (Basically turning it into a weaker Leftovers)
Justification: Lear, the founder of Pasio, has...quite the justifiable outcome for the Pokémon Battles held here. Like, who would expect famous trainers to use POTIONS DURING BATTLE ALL THE TIME INSTEAD OF HEALING MOVES?! However, at least Sync moves are fair game, so this ability combines the best of both of these qualities!

Name: Atticus
Effect: Star Style: Your team can't be poisoned.
Justification: R.I.P, Star Fashion. Gives your team the benefits of a Poison-type!

Plus, returning from the previous slate because he seemingly did so well in the vote....
