Trick Room Team. - Lots of Questions.

Hey guys,

First time posting on here but have been lurking and reading stuff for a couple of years. Have been jamming on Pokemon Showdown etc in the background for a while as well but haven't put much effort into it, but now that I'm having so much fun with X and Y I thought I might actually try and get a bit better at this.

Anyway, as per the title, this is a trick room team that I'm working on at the moment. I've been through quite a few different pokes in different spots on the team and I'm having a bit of trouble finding what the most generally effective team around the trick room playstyle is, and I'm interested to hear what you guys think, since I imagine 90% of you know a hell of a lot more about this than I do.

I know that it's kind of a gimmick. Some people will say it definitely is, and other people will say its 100% legit and not a gimmick. Either way, zero fucks given. I love the idea behind it. I like taking a bunch of slow bulky pokemon and basically smashing them into your opponent until you brute force your way to victory. At this point i'm not keen to drop trick room and start from scratch, but none of the pokemon I'm listing below I am particularly attached to, so all suggestions are beyond welcome.

Anyway, here's the team:

233_Porygon2.gif

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Trick Room
- Recover
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

Porygon2 is usually my go-to lead unless I can see an obvious counter. Pretty standard set for him. I've experimented a bit with a more specially defensive EV spread, and from experience the eviolite tends to do enough on its own, allowing me to invest more in special attack.

Slowbro_BW.gif

Slowbro @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Trick Room
- Scald
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam

Slowbro I've flip-flopped from the offensive set above to a full defensive spread (With slack-off instead of Ice beam) so many times i've lost count. The reason I'm currently sitting on the offensive one is because slowbro has so much survivability thanks to his defensive stats and regenerator. He tends to wind up being my last pokemon 80% of the time. (Probably less, but it sure as hell seems like a lot.) Games I've lost from this position have almost always been due to him lacking in punch, which the other coverage move and the SAtk EVs help out with. I'm kinda at a loss with him here, because I feel like dropping the defensive EV's takes away the survivability that actually lead me to build him like this anyway. It's like a horrible spiral of "WTF AM I DOING" and any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

579.gif

Reuniclus @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 Def
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Trick Room

Up until this point, Reuniclus was my staple. My main man. My rawdog westside homie that had my back when a couple of guys, who were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighbourhood. Now, I'm not so sure. What you might notice with this team, is that it's heavily special based at this point. One of what I think is it's most glaring weaknesses. Reuniclus is awesome under trick room. He sets it himself, and then sweeps himself. This has been so effective that it first lead me to drop the defensive spreads of my other two setters and play them like ghetto reuniclus. While he's BETTER at it than they are, I still need their bulk I think, but at the same time, I don't know if Reuniclus should stay or go.

mawile-mega.gif

Mawile-Mega @ Mawilite
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Brave Nature
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Swords Dance
- Fire Fang

Wow. This thing turned out to be a shit-ton better than I thought it would be. It WRECKS shit. like, REALLY wrecks shit. I don't normally advocate using swords dance on a trick room team, but I've found it works quite well if you can predict a protect or a switch that I couldn't score any damage off of. I don't use it HUGELY often, but it's shown merit in those small situations. I'm actually considering running another poke with a stat booster as well, especially since stall is such a pain for trick room. Speaking of stall...

295.gif

Exploud @ Choice Specs
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 Def
Quiet Nature
- Boomburst
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Surf

Can't find the topic, but I saw someone else with this thing on their trick room team and gave it a whirl. Boomburst basically lets me laugh at peoples substitutes. Lets be very clear here. I absolutely, passionately HATE substitute. It makes me want to grab a baby and use it to beat to death another baby. The fact that it's just as useful on things that aren't behind a sub is just icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. That being said, I realise that makes Exploud VERY one-dimensional and VERY predictable. There are definitely a few other pokes I'm considering for this slot.

Mienshao_BW.gif

Mienshao @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 SDef
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
- High Jump Kick

Mienshao is something that has come and gone from my team quite often. Completely useless when trick room is up, but quite a useful crutch when it's not. Most of what mienshao does is switch in when trick room is down, throw out a fake out -> U turn combo (about as close as you can get to 'free' damage)and heal any damage he took using regenerator. If slowbro doesn't end up being my last living pokemon, it's almost always mienshao when he's on the team. At which point out come the #YOLO High Jump Kicks which have lost me about as many games as they've won me. Not sure what other speedy pokes give me the same constant damage and end game power as mienshao, but I am open to suggestions.

I would like to give you guys a list of other pokemon I've been considering, but I swear I've looked at literally everything with less than 100 speed at some point. Scizor, Conkeldurr and Eelektross I think are probably three that I have switched in the most. Though thanks to me having very little knowledge of the game, we might as well assume I haven't looked at anything.

Anyway, the first thing that jumps out about this team is how heavily invested in offense it is. I feel I'm getting the most out of trick room this way, but I can also understand that may not be the best approach to the meta, particularly when I'm running a team that doesn't conform to the meta anyway. The team feels more 'complete' than It has done in the past, but I'm still not 100% happy with it, and to be honest I'm not sure why. I don't know if it's because I feel I'm to heavily invested on the special side, or if I'm just plain bored of my 3 core trick-roomers.

I really do appreciate any advice or suggestions you guys can give me. I'm really enjoying playing with trick room and I would like to explore it's possibilities a lot further.

Cheers guys, looking forward to the replies.

Hello there, I applaud your use of trick room, as it is one of my favorite playstyles, and I hope my suggestions help

Trick Room runs successful if you can (1) Catch your opponent off guard (2) Abuse your 4 turns of reversed speed tiers (3) Consistently deal with situations where Trick Room is not up. Anywho, on with the suggestions

First off, I highly recommend using Conkledurr (if you want something to switch out for exploud, conkeldurr would work well). From what I've seen, it seems to be almost a staple physical attacker on trick room teams, it hits like a truckload of freight trains and has STAB priority in mach punch if you need to beat something outside of trick room (It can also take hits quite well with its base 105hp). Drain Punch can be used to regain health, leaving you with two coverage moves of your choice. You also only have one trick room physical sweeper, so conkeldurr will take pressure off of mawile as a physical sweeper. (I don't have a set to suggest, but there are a lot of different ones out there)

Secondly, I personally prefer Psyshock over Psychic on Reuniclus, so it can handle specially bulky pokemon whose physical defenses aren't the best (since shadow ball and focus blast is an awesome coverage combo), but that's an age-old debate and it really comes down to what you want Reuniclus to hit.

Lastly, I find that trace can be somewhat of a let-down a lot of the time unless you can switch in on a really good ability (I switched in on speed boost once and then when TR went down Porygon2 swept the 4 remaining pokemon), and if you can get a Sp Atk Download boost (which happens roughly as often as tracing a really good ability), it really comes in handy. But again, it all depends on preference really.

Best of luck with the team.
TL;DR: Conkeldurr instead of Exploud, Psyshock over Psychic (if you want), and Download over Trace (again comes down to preference)

Thanks for the reply!

Hadn't really considered using download before. Will definitely give it a go today at some point.

Psyshock is probably a good call as well looking at the current spread. I've used it before but tend to lean towards psychic. Haven't played with it for a while (Since gen 6 actually) so I'll sub it in and see how I go.

I love Conkeldurr. My only problem with using him here is that I'm sitting with another mono-fighting type in Mienshao. Is this going to cause me any issues? Would it be worth replacing Mienshao with another speedy poke that can give me similar support. (An Ambipom maybe?) Or just throwing a slow Scizor on the back and abusing technician bullet punch/U-turn instead?

Sorry to keep adding questions. Pretty determined to get this team feeling right is all.

You do raise a good point with Mienshao, the whole 2 mono-fighting types could be a problem. I guess it would depend on how Conkledurr ends up getting used, since if it can do work out of Trick Room you could replace Mienshao with Conkeldurr. Scizor could come in handy, but I dont know if adding that 4x fire weakness would do you well. As a late game sweeper, you could add Moxie Salamance, finish something off with Draco Meteor, get the +1 Attack, and finish off your late-game threats.

May I ask why you have mienshao? This is a trick room team, and mienshao is a slight too fast for it.

Since you don't want 2 fighting types, you could go for a mamoswine.

Mamoswine

252 attack/252 HP/4 speed

Brave nature

Life Orb

Earthquake
Icicle Crash
Superpower
Rock Slide

Switch in on the trick room, and proceed to kill almost everything in your path. Not a lot can hope to kill this during trick room, and if it's effective as it is slow, imagine it out speeding the likes of garchomp and espeon

Mienshao gets used when Trick Room isn't up. I'll usually switch him in just after TR ends and score some easy damage from Fake Out -> U Turn and then bring a setter back in. Mienshao has regenerator, so he can recover any HP he lost from entry hazards. As long as I don't switch him in on something thats going to OHKO him this usually works out quite well.

Other than that, Mienshao works well in the instance that the rest of the team dies and I need something strong enough to kill shit and fast enough to outspeed things once Trick Room isn't a factor.

I've played around with having one fast pokemon rounding out the team before, and it tends to work out better than not.

Mamoswine is an interesting choice though. I've seen it get a lot more play this gen actually. I'm taking all these suggestions on board and am definitely experimenting with them. I'll try running him alongside a Conkeldurr as well as maybe ditching the conkeldurr and running him with the Mienshao as well and will let you know how it goes.

IMO Adding pursuit scizor/ambipom or something that could deal with Sableye could greatly benefit your team. Although WoW could get them before they could KO it.

Have been playing around with everyones suggestions as well as a few other options a fair bit the last few days, and I've got a slightly different team I'm running now that seems to be working reasonably well.

I've axed recover from Porygon2. More often than not it was a waste of a trick room turn. While I'm all for keeping my setters up, an active move like recover just ends up costing me a turn that I could be using to smash something. Believe it or not I'm actually running Tri-Attack in it's place. I'm having A LOT more success with it as well. On paper it should be worse, but in reality it is working CRAZY well. Eviolite is doing it's job and making Porygon tough enough to survive almost anything but without any EV investment. Knock off kinda cripples him. Doesnt turn him into glass or anything, but it still REALLY hurts. I'm looking for another potential option here that's strong enough in Special Defense, carries Trick Room, AND has significant offensive presence, but I might be searching for a long time. Porygon2 will do for now. Running Download on him now too. Trace is amazing, but Download is serving my purposes a lot better so far. Thanks for the suggestion Mango Smoothie. I'll also thank you for the Psyshock suggestion on Reuniclus as well. I've rolled a few blissey and other special wall switch ins with it and it has meant Reuniclus is putting mad work in again, which is awesome. Definitely a staple of the set now.

Besides those changes, My 3 setters are all still on the team. I've been changing up the other 3 quite a lot though, and this is what I'm running currently.

ampharos-mega.png

Ampharos/Mega Ampharos @ Ampharosite
Ability: Static/Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 Def
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Dragon Pulse
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Focus Blast

I've scrapped Mega-Mawile (for now) for this guy. I think in general Mawile is a better mega option than Ampharos, but I've gone in a slightly more physical damage oriented direction with the rest of the team, (The pokes below as well as Psyshock on Reuniclus being his only STAB option) so figured I would run another Special sweeper. Hits like an absolute TRUCK and has ok coverage. Not sure how I feel about having Volt Switch and Thunderbolt in the same set. I can get some nice little voltturn action with Scizor below, but I feel like having both is overkill when I could have another coverage move in there to deal with, well to be honest I don't know. But I feel like I'm missing something that should be able to wall this set really easily. I'm thinking maybe a Klefki or Mega Mawile is going to give me issues, but it hasn't come up yet so I'm not sure.

conkeldurr.gif

Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- Ice Punch

Yea I caved. He's too good. Currently running Guts but in all honesty I haven't landed him status AT ALL since I've been running him. Partially because my predictions are still pretty average I think, but given he has 3/4 moves boosted by Iron Fist that might be the way to go. Not sure though. Ran a toxic/flame orb for a while but Assault Vest makes him a hell of a lot tankier, without much power loss. Since I've sacrificed a lot of bulk on my 'wall' pokemon, a bit of extra on Conk seems to be paying off, especially if he ever finds use outside of trick room, which DOES happen.

scizor.gif

Scizor @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit
- U-Turn
- Superpower

YAWN. Scizor. I say yawn, but I do like this asshole, even if he is one of the most common pokemon around. Works as a decent revenge killer, or standard sweeper under trick room. He's here because I didn't want to use the Fighting/Fighting combo of Conk and Mienshao. I used Speed EV'd Ambipom as a sub for Mienshao for a while with mixed success. His lack of regenerator really hurt him over Mienshao for that niche as a fake out/U-turner. Scizor doesn't fill this niche at all, but gives the team better coverage and sweeping options under trick room. Scizor works pretty well outside of TR even when not invested in speed thanks to STAB bullet punch and his ability to check a lot of pokemon and get a technician boosted pursuit off.

Still playing around, but this team is definitely getting closer to what I think I want it to be. Still taking any suggestions on board, and I appreciate everything you guys have said so far. Cheers.
