Tricky Bastards [TR OU RMT]

Hey folks, long time no see! I'm slowly getting back into the competitive scene and I've got something neat to show you: A team!

This is a Trick Room team I've been playing with for a while to moderate success. In optimal situations, it's designed to hit hard in the early game and clean up whatever's left. Otherwise, it's a beefy team that takes hits easily while putting out good damage. While playing it, I've had quite a bit of trouble with bulky waters and Scizor... which is certainly a problem. Other than that, I've had quite a bit of fun with this team.

In Depth

rSu1n.png

(Bronzong) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Levitate
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 220 HP/36 Atk/252 Def
Relaxed nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Trick Room
- Gyro Ball
- Explosion
- Hypnosis

Bonzong has been leading magic so far. EV spread keeps him bulked up for physical hits with whatever's left put into attack. Hypnosis turns off pokemon that start setting up, Gyro Ball yells at possible taunters, and Trick Room/Hypnosis for switches. If Hypnosis goes off, follow up with Trick Room. At this point, an appropriate sweeper can come in and hurt things, leaving Bronzong to come in later to reup TR or explode in a pinch.

Zong is incredibly meaty and flat out says no to EQ. He can appear quite frequently.

(Machamp) @ Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 252 HP/252 Atk/4 Def
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dynamicpunch
- Substitute
- Payback
- Stone Edge

MACHAMP USED TEDDY BEAR!
MACHAMP IS SLIGHTLY COMFORTED!

It's definitely been a while since I've played competitively, but it's so strange to see a bunch of people using this guy. He was one of my first choices for this team simply because of the havok a fast Dynamicpunch could (and has!) cause(d). Both of my TR sweepers chase after flying types with Stone Edge, usually getting the KO or near KO.

If TR isn't up, he can still hurt folks pretty badly. Getting a sub in while going second can lead to some very satisfying hits.

(Dusknoir) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 SDef
Relaxed nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Trick Room
- Will-o-wisp
- Pain Split
- Ice Punch

My second Trick Roomer is also very tanky and just keeps chugging along with pain split. WoW yells at other physical sweepers, especially if TR is already going. Ice Punch checks for dragons and keeps birds away in general. Noir is pretty standard, yes, but it's a solid choice in this team and has no problem taking the field if the other walls or Trick Roomers are worried.

(Rhyperior) @ Life Orb
Ability: Solid Rock
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 248 HP/252 Atk/8 Def
Brave nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Megahorn
- Aqua Tail

Rhyperior either enters the field after a Trick Room, or if electric/fire starts showing up. In either situation, he wants to hit something really hard. He's got some decent attack coverage, but he usually doesn't stay out too long before the opponent goes to take advantage of his special defenses and typing. By that point, Rhyperior is more of a lure for bringing out someone better suited for the situation.

(Exeggutor) @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 SAtk
Quiet nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Sleep Powder
- Trick Room
- Explosion
- Leaf Storm

My last Trick Roomer and watercheck. Exeggutor isn't used as much for Trick Room as it is for that Life Orbed explosion. Anything that appears to look like a serious threat incurs his divine wind. Other than that, quick Leaf Storm is very, very nice under Life Orb and Sleep Powder is good when Bronzong isn't around. Exeggutor's turned around a few matches for me in the past.

X5EgU.png

(Milotic) @ Leftovers
Ability: Marvel Scale
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 252 HP/200 Def/56 SDef
Brave nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Surf
- Ice Beam

Milotic comes out when Trick Room isn't quite working out in a match. Its purpose is more water resistance and being generally unpleasant to fight against. Marvel Scale is rather nice while resttalking and is certainly in line with team's desire to live for quite a while.

Milotic is Rhyperior's best friend. Exeggutor watches over them both whenever it isn't off killing itself.

Team Building (thought) Process

It started off with the plan of utilizing a super fast DYNAMICPUNCH, so Machamp was thrown in even before dering my Trick Roomers.
vIzWp.png

With my power picked out, it was time to look at the Trick Room options. I wanted to make sure these guys were beefy and not afraid to use the teamsake move. Dusknoir and Bronzong were chosen around the same time and work rather well with each other.

With those two in place, I wanted another heavy hitter with some more attack coverage. Aggron was a pretty choice, but I went with Rhyperior already having a steel on the team. Bronzong was decided to be a lead at this point to fairly safely open up and get the team going.

So now I had to focus on the lack of anything really special. I also wanted one more Trick Roomer and some sort of failsafe if TR wasn't working too hot. The latter arrived by a friend's suggestion: Milotic. A beefy water type that says "No." until a Trick Roomer can come out. In retrospect, it was a mighty fine choice.

I was still left with little to use against opposing bulky waters, didn't have that much in terms of special firepower, and still wanted a third Trick Roomer. I finally took on Exeggutor. With a life orb, he can hit hard with Leaf Storm (compensation for the lack of grass moves on the team), use Trick Room when almost always given the opportunity... or explode when things look nasty.

So whatcha think?

Hi there! Cool Trick Room team you have here, Willy, but I have some suggestions that you may consider to make it better.

The first addition is the use of Stealth Rock on your team, as you don't have anyone who use it currently. Stealth Rock will help out a lot for your sweepers, especially when it comes to wearing down dangerous threats such as Gyarados and Salamence who can walk all over you. I suggest you use Stealth Rock in the place of Hypnosis. Even though Hypnosis can buy you a free turn to set up, its horrible 60% accuracy can turn into multiple lost turns instead. It really isn't that viable nowadays so I think you should replace it.

There's also another issue with your team: lack of a mixed sweeper. Because all of your sweepers are basically one-sided, stall teams and defensive teams in general are able to stall out your Pokemon with relative ease. That said, you should look into slow, mixed sweepers to help you with that issue. A Pokemon that stands out to me is Tyranitar:

Tyranitar @ Life Orb | Sand Stream
4 HP/252 Atk/252 SAtk | Quiet
- Superpower
- Crunch
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower

This kind of Tyranitar can wreak havoc against stall teams, destroying Blissey with Superpower, Skarmory with Flamethrower, Latias with Crunch, and Gliscor with Ice Beam. There's actually a lot of different moves you can use, such as Earthquake and Stone Edge, so you can fiddle around with its moveset to see what fits your needs best. I think you can replace Rhyperior for Tyranitar, as they are somewhat similar concept-wise, so you aren't really losing much.

I'm also going to suggest another Pokemon in the place of Milotic: Vaporeon. Both Milotic and Vaporeon are sturdy bulky Water-types, so you aren't losing anything with the replacement, really. What Vaporeon has, however, which makes it such a valuable Pokemon is Wish, which can definitely give your team the much needed recovery, especially Machamp and Rhyperior (Tyranitar if you go with my suggestion). Vaporeon still retains the ability to defeat the threatening Salamence, too. Here's the set:

Vaporeon @ Life Orb | Water Absorb
252 HP/252 Def/4 SpD | Bold
- Wish
- Protect
- Surf
- Ice Beam

I'll stop there for now. Try out those changes and see how the team fares. Hopefully I helped, good luck with your team!

(Machamp) @ Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
IVs: 0 Spd
EVs: 252 HP/252 Atk/4 Def
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dynamicpunch
- Substitute
- Payback
- Stone Edge

Did you mean to make it Adamant in case you don't get Trick Room up or is it supposed to be Brave?

@Master Ball
Yes. I stuck with Adamant for those instances without TR. It's already pretty slow without a -Spd nature, and if he somehow manages to outspeed something under normal conditions (Curse?) then that's a good opportunity to take.

... Although after reading what I just wrote, it seems a bit too situational. It hasn't been an issue in testing yet, but trying a different nature couldn't hurt.

@Fuzznip
I've thought about Vaporeon for a little while after the team had a few rounds. The wish support seems quite handy (and spreads to the rest of the team!) but I worry about the status inflictions. Milotic's been able to simply sleep them off in the past, but that also seems a bit situational. I'm gonna test out your set.

The Tyranitar seems like a pretty good idea, but I wonder how well it puts up with damage once Trick Room falls down. It's pretty cool to see it serve the same purpose while giving me a good fire attack though. Hmm.

As for Hypnosis vs. Stealth Rock, I'm still not entirely sold on it. From experience, Hypnosis has put away some nasty lead sweepers, usually giving me a nice free turn for Trick Room regardless of whether they switch. Stealth Rock could certainly help for the entire match, but there ought to be an alternative to giving up Hypnosis on Zong.

If you're afraid of status inflections throughout your team, running Heal Bell instead of Ice Beam is a possibility. So really, you end up with a very helpful supporter which your team could benefit from. All you can really do as of now is test it out and see how it fares.

The thing with Tyranitar is that it gives you the much needed mixed sweeping ability to your team. It will still dish out heavy amounts of damage and will act similarly to Rhyperior in and out of Trick Room. You're just using a different Pokemon with a slightly different view. You really need a sweeper that can defeat the dreaded SkarmBliss combination, which your team could potentially have trouble with (Machamp is the closest to defeating that combo), and Tyranitar does that exceptionally well.

If you are not too fond of giving Bronzong Stealth Rock in the place of Hypnosis, you could possibly replace Gyro Ball. I mean, your Bronzong is basically meant to set up and bring something down with Explosion to give one of your sweepers free entry, so it probably doesn't have enough time to Gyro Ball threats.

Good luck, bud.

Just a suggestion, but Why dont you use Marowak?
It is more defensive than Rhyperior, and it hits harder

Marowak@ Thick Club
Ivs: 0 Spd
Brave 192 HP/252 Atk/64 Def
~Earthquake
~Stone Edge
~Fire Punch/Double Edge
~Brick Break

Hits toooo hard, Earthquake is for some strong STAB, Stone Edge is for flying types, and Brick Break for Snorlax, while Fire Punch is for Skarmory

I agree that you need a special sweeper. Why don't you try a Camerupt.
Camerupt @ Life Orb | Solid Rock
216 HP/40 Atk/252 S.Atk/| Quiet
- Explosion
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power Grass/Ice

Same ability as Rhyperior, keep your electric immunity, lose a 4x grass weakness, and lose a steel weakness. EVs are to give his explosion more damage while keeping some survivability, or you can just dump it all into attack and special attack.

why is that milotics nature brave? i don't see any point in boosting milotics atk you are best off replacing that brave nature with quiet nature
