This is my second OU RMT. My first one was created when... I know Deoxys-S was legal back then. I think it was back in the time where Excadrill destroyed everything.
Anyway, with nothing else to say on the matter, here is the team...building process.
Anyway, with nothing else to say on the matter, here is the team...building process.
Team Building Process
So, first off, I started with one of my favorite pokemon from 4th gen, Lucario. However, instead of a physical set, I went with the his Nasty Plot set instead.
Since I had a special sweeper, I decided to go for a Physical sweeper that covered Lucario's weaknesses, and vice versa. My first thought was Dragonite, and why wouldn't it be? His main weaknesses are Ice and Dragon, both of which are covered by Lucario. Lucario's main weaknesses are Ground, Fire, and Fighting, and Dragonite covers them. However, I have used Dragonite a lot, and I wanted to try something new. And that was how I found Salamence.
One thing I've learned throughout my time battling is that entry hazards help a lot. Since this team was mainly going to consist of pokemon I have rarely used, I decided to branch out and try to find a pokemon that could set up entry hazards. I then found Froslass. With Destiny Bond, I was able to scare a lot of pokemon into switch. Plus, she was a spin blocker, which made her even more epic. And she partnered well with Lucario and Salamence since they resisted Scizor, the main pokemon that killer her off.
While it is good to have something to set up entry hazards, it is also good to have something that can get rid of them. I decided to go with a pokemon that wasn't relatively new to me, that being Starmie. I did try to build up this team from pokemon I didn't use all that often, but Starmie is one of the best Rapid Spinners I have. It has outspeed Gengar, who has been a common spin blocker for me, and it can do some damage against Jellicent, another common spin blocker.
Now, with the bulk of the team made, I decided to check to see what would give me trouble. The first thing I noticed was Terrakion. My god, that thing could practically wreck my team. With that in mind, I decided to add something to counter it, something defensive, something in the form of a giant purple scorpion. That's right, I added Gliscor.
Now, for the final pokemon, I decided to go with something to counter Sun teams since, at the time, I thought that they were going to be a nuisance. So, I decided on a sweeper that could set up on stuff like Ninetales and then proceed to destroy everything in sight. That pokemon was Volcarona.
After testing, I quickly learned this... Lucario and Volcarona were not helping this team out at all. After doing some searching, I quickly found two suitable replacements who kept the coverage Lucario and Volcarona had and even added in something to counter Water types. I added in both Heatran and Breloom.
My god, the work Heatran and Breloom put in was phenomenal. However, there was one issue that I needed to cover, priority. I didn't want to do this, but, after looking through my team, I learned that if anyone could be replaced for a prio user, it was Froslass. However, I had to decide on which priority user to go with. After searching, I quickly figured out how to go with. That pokemon is Scizor.
With that out of the way, onto the actual team!
The Team (Changes in Bold)
Quick Note: When it comes to the synergy listings, I wasn't sure if you put pokemon that resist the type, pokemon that beat the type, or both. So I went with both.
Hold item: Air Balloon
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 SpA, 4 SpD, 252 SPE
Ability: Flash Fire
~Fire Blast
~Earth Power
~Hidden Power
~Stealth Rock
Analysis: This pokemon is amazing. It can help beat Sun teams, counter Dragonite and physically offensive Salamence, it can even counter itself. With Stealth Rock, this behemoth gives me some much needed entry hazards. I had to think about which set to go with for this pokemon, and I ultimately went with the special set because it can do everything I listed earlier and cause quite a bit of damage as well.
Synergy:
- Salamence, Starmie, Breloom
- Salamence, Starmie, Gliscor
- Salamence, Starmie, Gliscor, Breloom
Hold Item: Lum Berry
Nature: Naive
EVs: 252 ATK, 4 SpA, 252 SPE
Ability: Moxie
~Dragon Dance
~Dragon Claw
~Earthquake
~Fire Blast
Analysis: Salamence has been probably one of the best pokemon in my team. At first, I was really tempted to have Roost instead of Fire Blast, but I decided to have Fire Blast because of pokemon like Ferrothorn. Originally, Salamence had a Leftovers. While the recovery was nice, after getting a recommendation for the Lum Berry, I decided to give it a shot. And I am not regretting it. Salamence has been able to hand Parashuffler Dragonite and Rain Stall a bit better now that statuses weren't an issue. As for the nature, that was a tough choice. While I love the power boost he would get from a Naughty nature, the speed boost he gets is more than helpful.
Synergy:
- Heatran, Scizor, Starmie, Breloom
- Heatran, Scizor
- Heatran, Scizor, Breloom
Hold Item: Choice Band
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 248 HP, 252 ATK, 8 SPE
Ability: Technician
~Bullet Punch
~U-Turn
~Superpower
~Pursuit
Analysis: At first, I was worried about switching from Froslass to Scizor. A few battles later, all of my worry went out the window. This guy is excellent! He helps take care of Terrakion, who is more than a pain for this team. And he also gives this team much needed priority, which is also something this team needed. Overall, this guy helps this team out a lot.
Synergy:
- Heatran, Salamence, Starmie
Hold Item: Leftovers
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 HP, 252 SPA, 252 SPE
Ability: Natural Cure
~Surf
~Ice Beam
~Thunderbolt
~Rapid Spin
Analysis: While he isn't as bulky as the other common Rapid Spinners, he has speed, tons of it. With this set, I gave it the Leftovers instead of the Life Orb. It's mainly for the recovery of it. With this set, Starmie can hit a lot of pokemon effectively, and it can outspeed Gengar, who is somewhat of a pain for this set.
Synergy:
- Gliscor, Breloom
- Heatran, Salamence, Scizor, Breloom
- Heatran, Salamence, Scizor, Gliscor
- Heatran, Scizor, Breloom
Hold Item: Toxic Orb
Nature: Impish
EVs: 252 HP, 184 DEF, 72 SPE
Ability: Poison Heal
~Substitute
~Protect
~Earthquake
~Ice Fang
Analysis: I'm surprised this thing isn't used that often. This thing is the true definition of the word "Troll." The ragequits this thing has caused were marvelous. When it comes to battling, this thing helps a lot against Tyranitar, Terrakion, and Landorus. Sadly, with Substitute comes a lack of power, but who knows, maybe I'll find a way around it. Anyway, this is probably one of the best defensive pokemon I have ever used, and I plan on using him for a long time.
Synergy:
- Salamence, Starmie, Breloom
- Heatran, Scizor, Breloom
Hold Item: Toxic Orb
Nature: Careful
EVs: 232 HP, 216 SpD, 60 SPE
Ability: Poison Heal
~Bulk Up
~Spore
~Drain Punch
~Seed Bomb
Analysis: Remember how I said that Gliscor caused ragequits? This guy has too. I never used Breloom before hand, and, honestly, he is probably one of the best dang pokemon I have ever used. He and Salamence are amazing when it comes to sweeping. I went with the Bulk Up set because I wanted to hit hard and be able to take some hits. I might switch to the SubPunch set if it ends up proving to be more helpful than the Bulk Up set. Overall, this thing is just as useful as Salamence.
Synergy:
- Heatran, Salamence, Starmie
- Heatran, Scizor, Starmie
- Heatran, Starmie
