I have to kick off this RMT by thanking my tutor for Round 56 of B101, Lamppost. We worked together to create this team and without his help I definitely couldn’t have been as successful with it as I was. I’d been wanting to create a Rain team for a while but just couldn’t decide on what to base it around. After seeing the destructive power of Gyarados, however, everything became clear. I feel the team is pretty solid as it brought me up to #20 on the ladderboard at one point with a CRE of 1455. Of course, this isn’t anything spectacular for many of you but to a mediocre player it feels like an accomplishment. Any and all rates will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Politoed @ Choice Scarf l Drizzle
Timid l 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Hydro Pump l Ice Beam l Focus Blast l Hidden Power [Electric]

Politoed is, of course, the indispensible weather starter. It’s also the Pokémon that I’m most insecure about. Honestly, I don’t know what to do for a set so any suggestions regarding that would be much appreciated. Both the defensive and Choice Specs variants were used prior to this before I switched over to this set in order to help patch up a couple of weaknesses. I’m willing to test out either of them again though if you guys think it would be beneficial. Anyways, I can’t think of too much to say regarding this fellow. If you’ve played any BW then you’ve seen him and know exactly what he does and how he does it. The choice between Modest and Timid for a nature was a difficult one, but the later was finally chosen to give me another check against weakened Starmie who was and still is a huge threat to my team. The significant loss of power is disappointing but a Rain-boosted Hydro Pump is still nothing to laugh at. Finally, I’m torn between the choice of Focus Blast and Psychic. The prior helps pave way for a Gyarados sweep by nailing Ferrothorn while the later allows me to check Toxicroak who would otherwise walk through a majority of my team. Because of that I’m leaning towards using Psychic, but I want your opinions as well.

130.png

Gyarados @ Leftovers l Moxie
Adamant l 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Waterfall l Bounce l Substitute l Dragon Dance

Gyarados is a beast; simple as that. He’s also my team’s MVP and one of the best Rain sweepers out there. I’m really not sure why I don’t see more of them. In the rain, almost nothing outside of Ferrothorn and Rotom-W can hope to stop it thanks to the combination of Substitute and an extremely overpowered Waterfall. Even then both of them can potentially be defeated through correct predictions and depending on how many boosts I have under my belt. And trust me, once those two are weakened or down its pretty much GG from there.

Substitute is obviously the bread and butter of the set. I can’t even begin to describe how much I love it. It lets me get behind a shield and set-up against Pokémon who think they can prevent me from sweeping with a status ailment and then fail miserably as they seal their own miserable fate. Waterfall is a STAB move which does absolutely ridiculous amounts of damage after a boost from the Rain and a DD while Bounce rounds out the set to hit Water/Grass-types.

232.png

Donphan @ Leftovers l Sturdy
Impish l 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Earthquake l Ice Shard l Stealth Rock l Rapid Spin

I believe that Donphan was the last member to be chosen. Despite that he’s definitely one of the most important Pokémon on my team. Simply put, without him my team couldn’t succeed. After choosing to use both Gyarados and Dragonite it was obvious that a spinner was going to be necessary. Lamppost was the one who suggested Donphan since it could do three very important things that my team needed at that point. Those are to handle physical threats, keep entry hazards off my side of the field, and get Stealth Rock on my opponent’s. Earthquake is about as obvious a move as they come. It gives me a powerful STAB attack and lets me nail Terrakion whom I wall pretty nicely. Not much to it really. Ice Shard, however, is much more useful since it lets me nail Dragon-types with +1 Speed to bring them down low enough to where I can revenge kill them with either Scizor or Dragonite without having to worry nearly as much about them surviving the hit.

212.png

Scizor @ Choice Band l Technician
Adamant l 208 HP / 176 Atk / 124 SDef
Bullet Punch l U-Turn l Superpower l Pursuit

Scizor has once again reclaimed his title as the king of OU. No surprise there. In a metagame filled with Psychic-type powerhouses like Latios and Reuniclus every team obviously needs a way to deal with them, and Scizor is how I do it. Without him I’d stand no chance of beating either of those threats along with some less common ones like Virizion. Besides keeping them in their place Scizor also helps against speed-boosting and naturally fast sweepers by demolishing them with alongside Dragonite using those stupidly powerful, dual priority attacks. I'm now using an EV spread suggested by BKC to help take hits better from all the aforementioned threats.

670.png

Virizion @ Leftovers l Justified
Timid l 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Giga Drain l Focus Blast l Hidden Power [Ice] l Calm Mind

I’ve always been a fan of Virizion despite how absolutely retarded it looks and so I was happy to find a spot for it on this team. It was chosen for two reasons. The first being that it’s an excellent partner to Gyarados. As it can defeat both Ferrothorn and Rotom-W, who can hinder Gyarados from obtaining a clean sweep. It also lures in stuff like Scizor who can be used to set-up. The second reason was that I needed a way of handling opposing Rain teams and Virizion defeats nearly everything outside of Toxicroak and Tornadus who make its life a living hell. Seeing as both of them are usually absent on Rain stall teams Virizion does an even better job at handling those. Though certainly not as well as its SD counterpart. Overall, it still works since a majority of the members will fall after a CM or two and those she can’t beat are often set-up fodder for Gyarados. So yeah, it’s really just a win-win situation.

149.png

Dragonite @ Choice Band l Multiscale
Adamant l 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Outrage l Earthquake l Fire Punch l ExtremeSpeed

I desperately needed a way of beating Sun teams and their two deadliest sweepers, Venusaur and Volcarona. On many of my previous teams I simple chose to use specially defensive Heatran or ScarfTar to remedy that problem but obviously those solution wouldn’t work this time around. Then I remembered reading an RMT created by Lamppost in the Smog which used a CB Dragonite to beat those two menaces. It was perfect! D-Nite could annihilate a good portion of the commonly seen Pokémon on Sun teams, synergized well with the rest of my team, and hit like a truck. I decided to give it a try and never looked back. Not once.

That’s the main reason D-Nite was chosen, but he can do so much more than that. Its powerful ExtremeSpeed helps to beat speed-boosting sweepers as mentioned before and lets me check weakened sweepers like Latios and Starmie. Dragonite’s brute force is also a great way of punching holes in my opponent’s team which Gyarados can then exploit. All of that being said, my team could simply not succeed without the help of the first generation Dragon-type.

==================================================

We're finally at the end. Again, all rates will be appreciated. The biggest threats to this team are the Lati twins along with Starmie. I'm not sure how to really patch these up though. Thank for reading.

I'm really worried about how vulnerable you are to Latios. It 2HKOs everything on your team; even Scizor, who resists Draco Meteor, is taken out by two successive hits after Stealth Rock. I recommend changing the EV spread to something along the lines of 208 HP / 176 Atk / 124 SpD; you remain most of your attacking power while gaining the ability to trap Latios with ease. The extra SpD also gives you an easier timing switching into Reuniclus and opposing Virizion. However, if this method of checking Latios is too risky for your liking, you might want to try Ferrothorn over Virizion. It retains the grass typing while countering pretty much everything Latios does (as long as Drizzle is up) and providing your team with Spikes support, which makes your hard hitters even harder to switch into. A moveset of Spikes | Leech Seed | Protect | Gyro Ball @ Shed Shell is ideal.

A more minor change I had in mind is to use Waterfall over Fire Punch on Dragonite. This hits Skarmory harder under Drizzle, and scores an OHKO on Gliscor. Nice team, hope I helped.

Thanks for the rate as always, BKC. I've been looking into a bulkier spread on Scizor for a while now and that one looks great.

Pawniard=Virizion?

I'm not sure how that happened!? Fixed it though.

Actually I think Fire Punch 2hkos Ferro in the rain still

definitly try a bulky Swords Dance Scizor, i know you miss out on a little initial power, having two choice band users could prove problematic, and scizor can easily set up on latios if it has roost, tanking -2 and -4 Draco Meteors while SD'ing. BKC's Ev spread is good, but i really suggest you change the moves to Swords Dance / Bullet Punch / Bug Bite / Roost. This all but alleviates your latios issues, assuming you dont switch into a draco meteor. DM 2HKo's but with roost you can keep roosting until latios isnt doing any damage or you predict the switch, then SD and you have even more power than Choice band. Good Luck!

Finally someone using Gyarados the right way. Not having max speed is just stupid given that Gyarados naturally trolls Base 80s, and not having max attack is equally stupid because Gyarados has a monstrous attack stat. Also, SubBounce is great. Personally I prefer Intimidate, but Moxie works too. Anyways, onto the rate...

Scald on ScarfToed? Did I read that right? Use Surf or Hydro Pump.

Donphan? No. Just no. Donphan is for shitty sun teams that don't have anything better to be using. Screw Stealth Rock, use fucking Starmie ;).

Finally, I think a couple changes on that 'Nite set are in order. You definitely need Waterfall somewhere since you're running Rain. It's your best shot against Skarm with Fire Punch nerfed, having a chance to 2HKO him with SR (assuming Rain). Or if you take my earlier advice and no longer have SR at your disposal, then it handles Skarm switch-ins well enough with either flinchax or prior damage. With Outrage and ESpeed being givens, that leaves one more slot, which I think should be filled by either Fire Punch or Brick Break (now that Rain-boosted Waterfall is there for Jirachi and Heatran switch-ins, the need for EQ is eliminated). Both these hit Ferrothorn for the same amount of damage under Rain. Brick Break's advantage is that it doesn't do complete shit to everything else once you're locked into it, and the advantage of Fire Punch is that it becomes your best option against a lot Steels if Rain isn't up for whatever reason.

Dragonite (F) @ Choice Band
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Outrage
- Fire Punch/Brick Break
- Waterfall

Great team Oblivion IX, just a nitpick.
252 speed timid scarf politoed hits 393 speed, is 1 point short of max speed timid nature base 130s. If you want to outspeed max speed timid nature base 120s (dugtrio, alakazam, weavile) only 204 evs in speed and timid nature is needed. If those aren't a problem then 176 speed timid is needed. It outspeeds base 115s. Surf is a better option than scald, while 30% burn does look tempting but that extra power is really useful.

Great team, and glad to see a fellow Lamp tutee demolishing ladder

Like its been stated before, latios is a pretty huge problem for this team, but with a bulkier scizor spread(already suggested) and cb dnite espeed he is fairly manageable. On politoed i would reccomend hp grass over electric, still being able to hit starmies as hard, and also hits those annoying gastrodons/ bulky waters. also hydro pump could be used over scald. scarf politoed wants to hit hard and fast, and hydro pump is the best move to do tht. if ur worried about accuracy, surf can always be used. Donphan is a fantastic way to deal with those hard hitting physical types(terrakion) and lay down rocks and spins. Pretty innovative, as those things are barely seen outside of a sun team. Other than some set changes this team looks extremely solid ^-^.

Hi. I'm not really offering a change here, just a question that I saw while reading about your awesome team. On your politoed set, why do you run scald over surf/Hydro? The scarf variant is meant to be a offensive variant, so scale kind of defeats the purpose unless your hoping to nab surprise burns

Scald on ScarfToed? Did I read that right? Use Surf or Hydro Pump.

Scald was meant to be Hydro Pump. Stupid mistake on my part.

using fire punch in rain...? maybe you should try brick break.

Actually I think Fire Punch 2hkos Ferro in the rain still

Fire Punch may look counterproductive on a Rain team, but as MMF mentioned it still scores a clean 2HKO on Ferrothorn. I'll definitely try out Waterfall as a way to hit Skarmory harder though.

definitly try a bulky Swords Dance Scizor, i know you miss out on a little initial power, having two choice band users could prove problematic, and scizor can easily set up on latios if it has roost, tanking -2 and -4 Draco Meteors while SD'ing. Good Luck!

I've been considering this set for a long time and will continue to test it out. Thanks for the rate.

Donphan? No.

- Waterfall
- ExtremeSpeed

I hope you realize that SR is absolutely necessary since it helps to limit the amount of damage both Dragonite and Volcarona can do while also turning 3HKOs into 2HKOs, etc. Trust me, I'd love to use Starmie but Donphan is necessary for that and other reasons. Finally, I'm in the middle of testing out Waterfall and EQ is absolutely necessary in order to beat Toxicroak with Bulk Up who would otherwise troll me.

I'll take those spreads into considering but I'm content with my current one for now as it lets me outspeed and revenge kill +1 Adamant Gyarados and Dragonite.

I've tested out both HPs and found [Electric] to be more useful in order to revenge kill +1 Gyarados. Meanwhile, I haven't found Gastrodon to be too much of a problem since Virizion can beat it, D-Nite can knock it low, and Gyarados is able to set-up against the standard variant.

~Bump!

EDIT: A threatlist has been added. I also changed Scizor's EV spread to that suggested by BKC and am in the process of testing out Waterfall in place of Fire Punch on Dragonite. Thanks for the rates, guys.

weird how I built around that same Gyara with my tutor too. he's a $wagmonsta

The team looks solid. Virizion seems like it would work great with gyara, gonna try this out sometime

Really solid team you have here. I love a team that takes advantage of MoxieDos' power, on your Politoed set, I'd recommend either Perish Song or Encore, Encore sounds retarded on a Scarf set right? It would provide the perfect opportunity for Gyarados to come in and set up a sub and proceed to sweep. It works as even just a filler, Focus Blast is quite redundant on a scarf toed. Good luck!

Thanks and yeah, the combination of Gyarados and Virizion is awesome.

I might try out Perish Song in order to help beat BP chains. Focus Blast does have some merit, however, since it helps to weaken Ferrothorn who stops Gyarados from sweeping.

Raikou CM can easily 6-0 your team, especially with rain support.

If you're going to point out a weakness then it'd be a good idea to not completely exaggerate how dangerous it is and suggest a way of remedying the problem. Anyways, Raikou may be dangerous but it doesn't 6-0 me like you claim. The combination of D-Nite's ExtremeSpeed followed up by Politoed's Rain-boosted Hydro Pump means that Raikou is 2HKO'd even at +1.

I would really consider using intimidate on Gyarados. The extra power with Moxie is awesome, but I think in conjunction with Substitute it would work much better. You could set on Ferrothorn unlike before since Power Whip won't do more than 25%, same goes with all physical attackers. A slightly bulkier sub would let you acquire 1 more DD boost, which is definitively better than +1 Moxie that is very hard to get initially.
