October 13 2015. A young man who went by the name Ice Horse had his sights set on completing the rigorous Dark Horse challenge. Facing the untamed horrors of the ladder itself, duking it out versus Volt-Switch, and the cancerous Chicken Pass, this is only but one battle of many.
As he pressed onto the ladder, he seems a familiar figure. This man emanated an aura unlike any other. One could see the disappointment in his eyes as the tragic event of XY occurred. It wasn't the Knock Off buff, nor the weather nerf, alas it was the fact that Copycat can no longer call out Roar. Punchshroom heeded no words, yet he gave a light grin before taking a Pokeball from his belt. The man was quite determined to end Ice Horse's streak.
Will Ice Horse be able to overcome Punchshroom's superior tactics, or will he be crushed by his toughest adversary yet? Let's find out.

A look into my team:

avalugg.gif
poliwrath.gif
gourgeist-large.gif
kecleon.gif
garbodor.gif

Since I had to play with the 35% usage limit, A+ rank mon limit, and the fact I had Avalugg, I decided to build fat balance. Notice that I don't have SR (I couldn't make anything else work so I settled with Garbodor.) Audino also provides important cleric support to these fat mons here.

Anyway, let's get into the match!

Format: NU
Ice Horse's team:
Audino / Avalugg / Poliwrath / Gourgeist-* / Kecleon / Garbodor
Punchshroom's team: Jumpluff / Golurk / Klinklang / Zangoose / Lanturn / Combusken

At first glance, I was already terrified. A Jumpluff lead could definitely screw me over early, though I was expecting either Golurk or Lanturn. I sent out Pepe Horse (Poliwrath) and hoped for the best.

★Ice Horse: this could mean the death of my run.
Battle between Ice Horse and Punchshroom started!
Go! Pepe Horse (Poliwrath)
Punchshroom sent out Lanturn!
★Punchshroom: I'll drink to that
poliwrath.gif
100% vs
lanturn.gif
100%

Not a good start for me. Volt Switch is extremely obvious, yet I don't have much of a choice. Poliwrath can definitely threaten a lot of his team members. AV Kecleon and Gourgeist are my two main switch-ins, but I think I'll go for Gourg here.

Turn 1

Pepe Horse, come back!
Go! Spoopy Horse (Gourgeist-Super)!
The opposing Lanturn used Volt Switch!
It's not very effective... Spoopy Horse lost 17.4% of its health!
Spoopy Horse frisked the opposing Lanturn and found its Assault Vest!
The opposing Lanturn used Volt Switch!
It's not very effective... Spoopy Horse lost 17.4% of its health!
★Ice Horse: nice to know.
The opposing Lanturn went back to Punchshroom!
Punchshroom sent out Combusken!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

gourgeist-large.gif
89.6% vs
combusken.gif
100%

Ah, not good. I was thinking he'd double, so I could definitely get off some Leech Seed, but that would definitely be a risky proposition. After all, I need Gourgeist for Golurk and to soft-check Zangoose. Back to Poliwrath it is.
Turn 2

Spoopy Horse, come back! Go! Pepe Horse (Poliwrath)!
The opposing Combusken used Fire Blast!
It's not very effective... Pepe Horse lost 35.1% of its health!
The opposing Combusken lost some of its HP!
Pepe Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
[Opposing Combusken's Speed Boost!]
The opposing Combusken's Speed rose!

poliwrath.gif
64.9% vs
combusken.gif
91% (+1 Spe)

I was this close to clicking Focus Blast, but I decided against it. Though a scald burn would've definitely been handy. I think I'm pretty much tilted at this point, pressured on how I'm going to lose all my progress.

Turn 3
The opposing Combusken used Baton Pass!
Punchshroom sent out Lanturn!
Pepe Horse used Scald!
It's not very effective... The opposing Lanturn lost 9% of its health!
Pepe Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

poliwrath.gif
70% vs
lanturn.gif
91% (+1 Spe)

Okay, let's try a different approach this time. I'm going Kecleon, perhaps I can get some hits off, provided he doesn't get a scald burn. But he'll most likely VS this turn. (man, I am getting owned.)

Turn 4

Pepe Horse, come back!
Go! Invisible Horse (Kecleon)!
The opposing Lanturn used Volt Switch!
Invisible Horse lost 18.6% of its health!
The opposing Lanturn went back to Punchshroom!
Punchshroom sent out Golurk!

kecleon.gif
81.4% vs
golurk.gif
100%

Okay, this isn't exactly bad. While he's definitely going to go for Stealth Rock, I'm going to Gourgeist. I'm scared of Colbur really.

Turn 5

Invisible Horse, come back!
Go! Spoopy Horse (Gourgeist-Super)!
Spoopy Horse frisked the opposing Golurk and found its Colbur Berry!
The opposing Golurk used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around your team!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

gourgeist-large.gif
95.6% vs
golurk.gif
100%

Ha, I was right about the Colbur. This battle's going a bit slow, and I'm definitely in an uphill battle, but since he's switching, I'll have an opportunity to do this.

Turn 6
Punchshroom withdrew Golurk!
Punchshroom sent out Combusken!
Spoopy Horse used Leech Seed!
The opposing Combusken was seeded!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The opposing Combusken's health is sapped by Leech Seed!

gourgeist-large.gif
100% vs
combusken.gif
79% (Seeded)

Finally, something done in this match. I'm going to do an odd move here, but it might definitely pay off. I'm sure Punch isn't expecting this.

Turn 7
Punchshroom withdrew Combusken!
Punchshroom sent out Jumpluff!
Spoopy Horse, come back!
Go! Kawaii Horse (Audino)!
Pointed stones dug into Kawaii Horse!

audino.gif
88% vs
jumpluff.gif

I wouldn't mind Audino absorbing the sleep right now.

Turn 8

The opposing Jumpluff used Sleep Powder!
Kawaii Horse fell asleep!
Kawaii Horse is fast asleep.

audino.gif
88% (SLP) vs
jumpluff.gif

Turn 9

Punchshroom withdrew Jumpluff!
Punchshroom sent out Golurk!
Kawaii Horse, come back!
Go! Urban Horse (Garbodor)!
Pointed stones dug into Urban Horse!

garbodor.gif
88% vs
golurk.gif
100%

This play sounds extremely silly, seeing as I need Garbodor for Klinklang/Zangoose, though perhaps they'll read my Gourgeist-XL switch in?

Turn 10

Urban Horse used Toxic Spikes!
Poison spikes were scattered all around the feet of the opposing team!
The opposing Golurk used Earthquake!
It's super effective! Urban Horse lost 87.6% of its health!
Urban Horse fainted!
Go! Spoopy Horse (Gourgeist-Super)!
Pointed stones dug into Spoopy Horse!
Spoopy Horse frisked the opposing Golurk and found its Colbur Berry!

garbodor.gif
0% (FNT) vs
golurk.gif

6-5, he's still in the lead. Toxic Spikes boosts Zangoose, but I think this is for the best. Now I can capitalize on whittling his squad down.

Turn 11

Skarmx2 joined.
Punchshroom withdrew Golurk!
Punchshroom sent out Lanturn!
The opposing Lanturn was poisoned!
Spoopy Horse used Foul Play!
A critical hit! The opposing Lanturn lost 21% of its health!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The opposing Lanturn was hurt by poison!

gourgeist-large.gif
94
% vs
lanturn.gif

(PSN)

Foul Play or Leech Seed? What a question. FP would definitely be better, but leeching Combusken would be nice.

Turn 12
The opposing Lanturn used Volt Switch!
It's not very effective... Spoopy Horse lost 15.3% of its health!
The opposing Lanturn went back to Punchshroom!
Punchshroom sent out Jumpluff!
Spoopy Horse used Leech Seed!
It doesn't affect the opposing Jumpluff...
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

gourgeist-large.gif
96.7
% vs
jumpluff.gif
100%

Note to self, go with Foul Play. Okay, this isn't exactly good. I've been playing like a complete moron. I could definitely wisp or FP, but instead I'll go for this.

Turn 13

Punchshroom withdrew Jumpluff!
Punchshroom sent out Zangoose!
The opposing Zangoose was poisoned!
Spoopy Horse, come back!
Go! Table Horse (Avalugg)!
Pointed stones dug into Table Horse!
The opposing Zangoose was hurt by poison!

avalugg.gif
75% vs
zangoose.gif
88% (PSN)

I don't want to eat a Knock off or let Zangoose get to +2, so I might as well stay in. He doesn't know I'm AV yet, and it would be really obvious if I went to Gourgeist.

Turn 14

Punchshroom withdrew Zangoose!
Punchshroom sent out Lanturn!
Table Horse used Superpower!
The opposing Lanturn lost 50% of its health!
Table Horse's Attack fell!
Table Horse's Defense fell!
The opposing Lanturn was hurt by poison!
The opposing Lanturn fainted!
Punchshroom sent out Zangoose!

Did not expect Lanturn to come in, but I'll take it. Combusken coming in I'm assuming?

Turn 15

The opposing Zangoose used Knock Off!
Table Horse lost 43.2% of its health!
The opposing Zangoose knocked off Table Horse's Assault Vest!
Table Horse used Superpower!
It's super effective! The opposing Zangoose lost 88% of its health!
Table Horse's Attack fell!

The opposing Zangoose fainted!
Punchshroom sent out Klinklang!

avalugg.gif
31.8% (-2 ATK/-2 DEF) vs
zangoose.gif
0% (FNT)

Seeing as I'm already at -1, you'd think I'd switch to Gourgeist. I decided against it and just clicked Superpower. This is what happened.

Turn 16

Table Horse, come back!
Go! Spoopy Horse (Gourgeist-Super)!
Pointed stones dug into Spoopy Horse!
Spoopy Horse frisked the opposing Klinklang and found its Leftovers!
The opposing Klinklang used Shift Gear!
The opposing Klinklang's Speed sharply rose!
The opposing Klinklang's Attack rose!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

gourgeist-large.gif
90% vs
klinklang.gif
100% (+1 ATK/+2 SPE)

It's either Foul Play or Will-o-Wisp here. I'm going for FP, just in fear of Substitute Klinklang.

Turn 17

The opposing Klinklang used Gear Grind!
Spoopy Horse lost 19.3% of its health!
Spoopy Horse lost 19.3% of its health!
Hit 2 times!
Spoopy Horse used Foul Play!
The opposing Klinklang lost 43% of its health!
The opposing Klinklang restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

gourgeist-large.gif
57.4% vs
klinklang.gif

Synthesis. They could either switch out at this point since GG isn't doing any damage, if they try to setup FP kills them, and burn destroys them too.

Turn 18
Winter's Howl joined.
Punchshroom withdrew Klinklang!
Punchshroom sent out Combusken!
The opposing Combusken was poisoned!
Spoopy Horse used Synthesis!
Spoopy Horse regained health!
Spoopy Horse restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The opposing Combusken was hurt by poison!

gourgeist-large.gif
100% vs
combusken.gif

Now that Table Horse has done his job, I can freely sack him. It's the most optimal play at this stage.

Turn 19
Spoopy Horse, come back!
Go! Table Horse (Avalugg)!
Pointed stones dug into Table Horse!
The opposing Combusken used Fire Blast!
Table Horse avoided the attack!
The opposing Combusken was hurt by poison!
[Opposing Combusken's Speed Boost!]
The opposing Combusken's Speed rose!

avalugg.gif
6.9% vs
combusken.gif
55% (PSN)

That's unfortunate. Nothing much I can do about it though. I could go for Rapid Spin I guess, if for some reason they don't kill me. Looking at the remaining pokemon, Jumpluff's the main threat I need to stop, but I have something up my sleeve to beat it.

Turn 20

★Punchshroom: sigh
The opposing Combusken used Fire Blast!
It's super effective! Table Horse lost 6.9% of its health!

A small misplay here, going for Ice Beam instead of Vacuum Wave. Though, I was really scared of Jumpluff.

A/N: Hi guys, the warstory thing was approved by Kiyo, so I'm posting it here. Granted this battle wasn't the best, as I've played quite poorly early on, yet this is one of the main highlights of my Dark Horse Challenge.

Pros:
- Gourgeist-XL manhandling Klinklang and Golurk
- Avalugg surprise double kill
- Ice Punch Kecleon

Cons:
- M-Audino didn't do anything this match.
- Missing Gear Grind/Fire Blast.
- My plays early on.
- Posting this way too early by accident.
