Tyrogue ADV LC Analysis

[Overview]
My last post was simply "not with the times.." as Gen 2 fades further into the obsolete.
However, I'm dedicated to the little amateur fighter pokemon, Tyrogue, and his abysmal yet undeniable determination as a Pokemon.
Tyrogue always was a sad and odd case due to his placement within the competitive side of Gen 3 due to its abysmally low balanced stat spread as a fighting type baby Pokemon.
However, due to how Gen 3's mechanics work, Tyrogue can surprisingly find somewhat plausible use in the competitive scene despite there being much better choices all around.
Tyrogue may sit fairly in PU due to the quirks of Gen 3 and Tyrogue's weird and lackluster movepool, but this is debatable and varies with the individual.
Tyrogue is better opted for LC, where it can stand a small chance, if much of a chance fighting alongside other unevolved and LC mons.
Tyrogue won't be doing much for long on the field anyways, whether it's in LC or PU, in the case that one may want to use Tyrogue in PU to simply "say screw the meta!" for whatever reason, but I'll mainly be prioritizing LC for the sake of competitive dignity.

[SET]
Name: Amateur's Offense
Move 1: High Jump Kick
Move 2: Return / Rock Slide
Move 3: Detect
Move 4: Toxic
Item: Quick Claw

Ability: Vital Spirit

Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -S.Atk)

EVs: 252 Atk / 128 Def / 128 SpD.
IVs: 31 Atk / 31 Def / 31 SpD.

[Set Comments]
This set is in all honesty, probably the only set Tyrogue will be running in the ADV meta, as it aims to allow Tyrogue to make up for it's abysmal strength while allowing it to make use of Poison status and protection.
Toxic should be a used on the first turn followed by Detect to ensure Tyrogue survives on the second turn and that Poison status takes effect.
The second move choice is purely conditional. Return will allow Tyrogue to do fair neutral damage at 102 base power with max happiness, but lacks coverage, whereas Rock Slide covers up for the Flying and Bug types that resist Tyrogue's High Jump Kick STAB.
High Jump Kick gives Tyrogue decent Fighting type STAB and fair coverage and will allow it to break physically weak walls like Igglybuff, Cleffa, and Togepi in LC, who all have fair special potency. Quick Claw allows Tyrogue to gamble on Speed and sometimes move first without the need for a speedy utility setups or entry hazard conditions, and can make some opposing Pokemon strategies topple, forcing a switch at best, but otherwise just getting temporary priority.

[Other Comments]
This Set, like many other Tyrogue sets, has clear flaws. Toxic does nothing against Poison or Steel types, so it's best to look out for those, as they easily nullify it. Items can ruin this strategy pretty early on if not checked, and moved like Heal Bell and Refresh all easily check Tyrogue's use of Toxic, not to mention Tyrogue's only best STAB of Hi Jump Kick being brushed off by the likes of Beldum and Shuppet, or the the Flying types of Pidgey, Taillow, and Spearow if Tyrogue isn't running Rock Slide.

[Team Options]
Tyrogue absolutely welcomes the benefit of entry hazard setters such as Pineco or screen setup allies such as Ralts for making the most of its time on the field if lacking or not wanting to gamble with Quick Claw. Specially offensive Pokemon that can provide coverage options like Abra or Gastly for highly offensive Bolt-Beam power are also welcome.
Specially defensive mons who resist Tyrogue's STAB High Jump Kick such as Grimer or Duskull can be dealt with by Natu via Psychic STAB or Shadow Ball, while Koffing can make up for Tyrogue's lost Poison coverage attempts while being a good revenge killer with Selfdestruct, although frailty of such mons should also be brought into consideration when running Tyrogue on any team.

hey AstralBlueジャブ,

i appreciate your enthusiasm for writing analyses but unfortunately the generation 3 lc analysis project is closed at this time (which you can read more about here if you are curious,) so i will be locking this thread.

additionally, to start a thread in this forum you need to have first reserved a pokemon to analyze and have it approved by a c&c forum mod. you can read more about that process here for the adv lc analysis project and here for the other lc oldgens. please note that you can only reserve pokemon that are posted by c&c mods.

if you have any further questions feel free to send me a dm here on smogon or on discord (my username is also grapetylenol there.)
