U-turn Team

Hey all.

Ive been lurking around for a while, and playing on both the Smogon and PO server. I've been trying different teams out without much success until I recently read Vexatious' warstory "Kanto can be Vexing" and decided to try and make a u-turn team of my own. It has proven more successful than my other teams (although still not great), but its great fun to play with too. So without further ado, here is my team (feel free to read the buildng process too!)

Team Building process:

OK, so I knew my lead was going to be Mienshao. It has good speed, U-turn, and its ability is regenerator. With Life Orb added, it can attack twice, then U-turn to gain all the health lost from life orb. Pretty handy.

Next was always going to be Uxie. With its immense SpDef stat, good typing and resistance to ground, it is great to use as a pivot switch. However I alsu use it as a phazer and general annoyer.

I needed a special attacker, obviously that new U-turn. Or volt switch. Yes, sneaky, but handy. Thundurus is a fantastic special attacker, and has a pseudo bolt beam combo. Nice

I noticed I had two attacking pokemon who had quite low defense stats, so I needed a defensive pokemon. I have never used Rotom-W, but figured that it must be popular for a reason so I thought I'd give it a go. Oh yeah, it also has volt switch :D

Now, at this point I have a lead, two defensive pokemon and a special sweeper. I Like to have different sweeping options, so my last two slots were going to be willed by another special sweeper and a physical sweeper.

Ah Scizor. How I love you and loathe you. You are so frail, yet so powerful. Having Scizor in my team makes it all the more important having Rotom-W as a pivot switch, since most people will be trying to fire blast their way through Scizor's measly defenses.

I wasnt too sure about including Hydregion. All my sweepers are very frail already. But it is so powerful! It also provides a nice switch in on psychic attacks aimed at Mienshao

After playing through a little bit, and following Wario's advice, I decided to add Forretress as a rapid spinner, and change Rotom-w to a specs variant. Unfortunately, Thundurus was the one to go.

Now with this, I have a big problem. I am very Volcarona weak, with 4 of my pokemon being weak to Volcarona's STAB attacks, and Mienshao being weak to any attack. To counter this, I've swapped Hydregion (who I wasnt to sure about to begin with) with my own Volcarona. Having a rapid spinner in the team makes Volcarona so much more viable.

Now, the tech specs of my team

620.png

Mienshao (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- U-turn
- Fake Out
- Hi Jump Kick
- Hidden Power [Ice]

I love Mienshao lead. It can power through many common defensive threats, or just switch out and regain health if it is walled. HJK is for powerful stab, and HP Ice is mainly for Gliscor. Switching Mienshao into Gliscor can often be handy. Fake Out breaks protect, then HP Ice does the rest. Mienshao has a decent SpA stat, so it does more than most opponents expect. Regenerator and U-turn is really a great combo. Life orb U-turn does great damage to lead Tyranitar, then the life lost from Life Orb is regained on the switch.

Uxie @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Yawn
- Trick
- U-turn
- Heal Bell

Ah Uxie, my most amazing annoying phazer. Tricking a choice scarf onto un-suspecting foes is its first job. Favourite targets include Blissey, Ferrothorn, Forretress and Milotic. DD Salamence and Gyrados also hate this tactic. Yawn is a great phazing move. It often gets me a free switch in to Volcarona, who can quiver dance up then take down one or two opponents, sometimes more. Heal Bell is there to keep my team status free, and U-Turn, well, need I say more.

479-w.png

Rotom-W @ Choice Specs
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 164 HP / 252 SAtk / 92 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power [Grass]

I had never considered Specs Rotom-W until now. I have never liked Hydro Pump's accuracy, as it always seems to miss when I need it te most. However the sheer power of this outweighs the negatives. HP Grass is mainly to hit problematic Swampert, Quagsire and Gastrodon, as these can really wall me otherwise. Shadow ball is for coverage.

205.png

Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Volt Switch
- Toxic

Forretress is mainly a utility pokemon. Setting up stealth rock helps me deal with Volcarona, who poses a real threat to my team. Forretress also helps keep my field clear or rocks, which can hinder my own Volcarona. Toxic is there for sheer annoyance.

212-f.png

Scizor (F) @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Superpower
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit

Very much your typical Scizor set. Bullet punch for STAB priority, U-Turn for STAB momentum gainer and superpower for its sheer power. Then Pursuit. This is a fun move just to mess with people. It makes opponents think twice about switching out on Scizor. All you need is to hit something on the switch out, and the opponent thinks that maybe next time, they will leave them in to tank the weakened Pursuit. Then you can pick whatever move you like, and hopefully the opponent hasnt switched. This works great on Reuniclus and Blissey, as they can eat either a U-turn or a Superpower (respectively) on their second encounter

637.png

Volcarona (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Flamethrower
- Morning Sun

Bulky Volcarona set. Allows me to set up with two Quiver Dances, recover and then attack. Having two pokemon that are 4x weak to fire usually allows me a good switch in to an opponents pokemon that carries a non STAB fire type attack. Flame body also allows me so switch into things like Scizor and Technitop, hopefully burning them on the switch in and therefore nullifying their effectiveness.

So let me know what you think. As I said, Even though this team hs been my best so far, it still isnt great, so I'm all for tweaking it a bit. As long as the Pokemon has U-Turn or Volt Switch, then I'm all ears :D

Ok, thanks Wario.

I might try Forretress over Thundurus and change Rotom-W to a specs set.

On Thundurus though, if I was to keep it, it does have T-Bolt already.

And thanks for the EV spread on Scizor. EV spreads are kinda my weakest point when it comes to putting together teams.

While it works on everything else, U-Turn on Volcarona is a poor idea. One of your overall goals is to get Volcarona in (relatively) safely, then start with Dancing and get the sweep. With a Timid nature and already weak attack, you're better off just giving him a coverage/recovery move.

Yeah, youre totally right. I know U-turn is the theme of my team, but having it (or volt switch) on my other 5 pokemon allows me to switch around and weaken the opponents team, get rid of volcarona counters and then sweep. I've updated accordingly.
