Hello all! Welcome back to Ubers UU NBT! After a bit of a hiatus - TB ban would have rocked this so was best to wait - we are ready to get going on a more regular basis.

The Next Best Thing (NBT) is a community-led project intended to encourage innovation for Pokemon in ways never seen before. Users will submit sets for the Pokemon of the week that are not listed on their Smogdex pages, where they can choose new items, moves, EV spreads or Abilities. I encourage creativity but also carefully consider viability! The host (me) can choose to reject any sets I seem to be garbage, though anything thoroughly explained is likely to be accepted. Please read the Procedures and Rules of the thread before submitting a set!

  • Every cycle (1 per week), a new Pokemon will be chosen for participants to create a new set for. All the existing sets (or WIPs) on the Smogdex are banned, so make sure to double check before submitting. (This includes move variations listed).
  • Participants have 4 days to submit their sets in this thread, starting on Monday and running until Friday.
  • Voting will occur during the remaining three days of the week, from Saturday to Monday.
  • All the winning sets will be kept in the Hall of Fame (see tab linked on this post).

Set Rules
Be as creative as possible, but your creativity must also show viability. Don't make a set solely to make a set!
  • You may only post 1 set per cycle. If you wish to change sets, delete your original post and notify me!
  • As mentioned above, do not take sets from Smogdex!
  • You must explain your set in detail. It is recommended to include a replays and/or notable calcs of the set in action, and you are welcome to include teammates options, threats, usage tips, & even a team built around the set. Your set may be excluded from the ballot if it does not have sufficient explanation of why someone would use it.
  • You are allowed to reserve your set in this forum, but the reservation expires after 24 hours. Please have your description complete before after this point.
  • Please name your sets based on the moves and items, and not random funny names. If no set name is provided then only your profile name will appear on the ballot.
  • You aren't allowed to copy anyone else's set.
Voting Rules
  • Follow the guidelines for voting specified each week. If multiple votes are allowed, you may still choose to only vote for one set if you wish.
  • You can't vote for your own set.
  • No vote manipulation.
Other
  • If you have any questions, please ask in DMs, Smogon profile, or Discord.
  • Consider a 'Like' reaction to mean your post is approved, or 'Angry' to mean it needs changed or deleted.
  • Follow the Forum Rules and be polite with other members here.
  • Have fun! Any and all engagement is really appreciated.

hi, natural set.

cm does an excellent job of sweeping games, 1v1ing cm ndw with tb, spread poisons on monds with sludge bombs, earth power hits mag, zama & other steels. I've run Fire Blast over Earth Power on this set, but garg is a more valuable target than skarm/corv to me. 176 spe hits ogerpon and therefore allows it to check it relatively safely provided no speed boost. with cm you can also take on other sweepers and the poison allows u to take on darkceus and eleceus too.

I don’t really have any cool unseen arc poison set to unleash (might come up with one later) but I’d like to point out that defensive arc poison can forgo the ogerpon speed tier in favor of a lot more bulk by going something like 76+ speed to outspeed the base 97s (works well if you have other measures for ogerpon)

Crit-me-not (Arceus-Poison) @ Toxic Plate
Ability: Multitype
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 84 SpA / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Cosmic Power
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Recover
Poison is a good defensive typing, and :arceus: gets Cosmic Power, letting it amplify its defenses. Sludge Bomb is the poison equivalent of Scald, being a decently strong move with a 30% chance to inflict status, and Earth Power is for coverage against steels like :magearna: and :zamazenta-crowned:. Recover helps ensure its longevity. 84 SpA is enough for Sludge Bomb to KO :ogerpon-hearthflame:, and 176 Speed with Timid nature guarantees outspeeding it. The rest goes into HP for general bulk. Tera Fairy, aside also being a good defensive type, blanks phasing from Dragon Tail, making it that much harder to remove.
This :arceus-poison: set is best used as a late game cleaner, given the miniscule amount of Special Attack investment and no means to increase it during the course of the match. Due to this, it should be used on a team with hazard support, such as :magearna: (tbh you should be bringing it every game), and ways to mitigate its ground weakness, which include the likes of :moltres: and :rillaboom:.

Tera Grass just makes it resist EQ while staying neutral to rocks.

Perhaps Tera Faerie would be a better idea instead of tera grass to block dtail phazing. You don't gain a resistance to psychic or ground, but you're already defense boosting so just having the neutralities is good enough imo

Bulk Up(Arceus-Poison) @ Toxic Plate
Ability: Multitype
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Atk / 48 Def / 24 Spe
Impish Nature
- Bulk Up
- Shadow Claw
- Poison Jab/Gunk Shot
- Recover

Yes, you are looking at this right. This is a real set that I will be submitting to this thread.

At first glance, this EV spread looks very weird, so let me explain my choices for this EV spread. 252 HP/ 48+ Defense allows Arceus to survive two Psystrikes (granted they aren’t the highest rolls) from Boots Mewtwo twice (252 SpA Mewtwo Psystrike vs. +1 252 HP / 48+ Def Arceus-Poison: 186-222 (41.8 - 50%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO). This EV spread also allows it to comfortably take on Zacian somewhat well

+1 252 Atk Tera Ground Zacian Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. +1 252 HP / 48+ Def Arceus-Poison: 186-222 (41.8 - 50%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO

+3 252 Atk Tera Fire Zacian Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. +1 252 HP / 48+ Def Arceus-Poison: 154-183 (34.6 - 41.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+3 252 Atk Tera Fire Zacian Psychic Fangs vs. +1 252 HP / 48 Def Tera Ghost Arceus-Poison: 119-141 (26.8 - 31.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

+1 176 Atk Tera Ghost Arceus-Poison Shadow Claw vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zacian: 136-162 (41.8 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

24 Speed allows Arceus to speed creep 252 Neutral nature Landorus-T, and the rest are invested into Attack

Tera Blast Ghost allows it to hit Giratina for super-effective damage (+1 176 Atk Tera Ghost Arceus-Poison Shadow Claw vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Giratina: 264-312 (52.4 - 62%) -- guaranteed 2HKO), as well as hitting other things for neutral damage such as Magearna.

Unfortunately, due to lack of EVs, and the lack of Swords Dance, this Arceus set struggles to hit physically defensive walls very well without Tera, and even with Tera it can feel like a waste.

+1 176 Atk Tera Ghost Arceus-Poison Shadow Claw vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 82-97 (27 - 32%) -- 51.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 176 Atk Tera Ghost Arceus-Poison Shadow Claw vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Magearna: 102-120 (28 - 32.9%) -- 84.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

176 Atk Tera Ghost Arceus-Poison Shadow Claw vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Landorus-Therian: 79-94 (20.7 - 24.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

So if you want to use this set effectively, you will need a way to either weaken the enemy, or a way to get rid of these counters, as well as hazard removal because rocks ruin this set. But hey, at least you will look innovative and stupid.
