Umbreon (Analysis)

Umbreon

--------

[Overview]

Umbreon hasn’t been changed much in this generation, except for the fact that the affect of mean look in Generation V if a Pokémon traps a target with Mean Look and then switches with Baton Pass the target will no longer be trapped. Although this change was made, it still rocks the Curse/ Payback set. Overall, Umbreon is great in the UU tier.

[SET]
name: Curse
move 1: Curse
move 2: Payback
move 3: Moonlight/Wish
move 4: Toxic/ Confuse Ray/ Last Resort/ Quick Attack/ Sucker Punch
item: Leftovers
ability: Synchronize
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Def or 4 Atk

[SET COMMENTS]

This set combines Umbreon’s low speed with Payback and Curse to raise Umbreon’s attack for Payback and fourth move if an attacking move is used, defense so Umbreon can have higher defense than special defense even if special defense is maxed out, and speed drop to help assure Payback will hit after your opponent. Moonlight is to be used in the sun for a 2/3 max recovery, While wish is used to heal Umbreon later in the battle when it’s HP is low. For the last move slot, toxic helps it actually hit fighting types and other dark types, but can only hit steel types with payback, which is bad. Confuse Ray is there so could potentially gain a turn or two to heal or elapse time for wish to come in effect. Last Resort is a really powerful move to use if the other three moves have been used. Quick Attack and Sucker Punch were added as moves that give a final blow in case Umbreon can’t take another hit or it will faint. The EV's for Umbreon are simple: Its Special Defense is maxed out because it adds additional bulk to an already bulky Pokémon, HP is maxed out because defense will be sky high after one Curse, and the extra point can go into defense because it just can and attack for a bit more powerful Payback.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Umbreon works well with sunny day teams because moonlight heals 2/3 of Umbreon’s HP instead of the regular ½. Umbreon also works well with entry hazards to hit have damage dealt to Pokémon it would usually take longer to beat. Never run Umbreon with a Trick Room because you need Payback’s power to be doubled.

[Other Options]

Umbreon could go with a Baton Pass set, but it wouldn’t be very viable because main move other than Baton Pass, Mean Look, can no longer be passed and wish’s new mechanics make it heal ½ of the users HP, which means if you switch into a Pokémon like Blissey and think half of your 714 HP will be recovered, you’re wrong. A Calm Mind set containing Calm Mind (Obviously), Dark Pulse, Psychic or Stored Power, and HP Fire is also usable, but Espeon outclasses this majorly.

[Checks and Counters]

Ferrothorn can wall Payback like it is nothing, doesn’t take damge from toxic, and hurts Umbreon with Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet if it is holding one. Ferrothorn can also raise its defense with Curse and Lower its own Speed, rendering Umbreon more useless than before. The only way Umbreon could beat Ferrothorn is with confuse ray, entry hazards, and a lot of HAX from confusion. Umbreon also can’t Synchronize Poison to Ferrothorn because of its immunity to Poison.

[Dream World]

Umbreon gets the ability Inner Focus from the Dream World, which protects it from flinching, which is good against Pokémon that have Fake Out, but Synchronize is way better for Umbreon.
