Petition to unban Dig and Fly
Hi all, I am Beelzemon 2003, the author and contributor of the Gen 1 and Gen 2 side formats threads. I want to request the Gen 1 Council to unban the moves Dig and Fly in all the formats of Gen 1. As you may know, these moves are banned because if the user gets paralyzed or hits itself in the second turn of the move, they remain semi-invincible until they use Dig, Fly or Switch; this creates an unfair advantage because the only moves that can hit the user while it is stuck in the air or the ground are Bide and Swift (both of which are rare in all formats of Gen 1).
After reading the previous paragraph you mak ask, why should we unban those moves? Well, these are my reasons:
1. These moves would improve the performance of some pokémon that have bad movepools like Articuno in UU, Nintetales in NU, Farfetch'd in Petit Cup and Charmander in Little Cup.
2. Currently, Dig and Fly can be used via Metronome.
3. The semi-invincibility glitch of Dig and Fly is not present in the Showdown simulator, which makes the ban not needed.
4. If the glitch were added in the future, there is a clause that would prevent players from abusing the glitch, it is called the Semi-invincibilty Clause (you can find it here).
5. Aside from their glitch, the moves are not broken by any means.
Regarding the Semi-invincibility Clause, this basically says that if a pokémon gets stuck in the air or the ground, its next action must be Dig, Fly or Switch, if the next action is none of those, the player loses.
Some may argue that the Semi-invncibility Clause can't be added because it is not the custom of Nintendo, nor Showdown to use rules that restrict the players' actions; well, that is not true, there is currently another clause that does restrict the players' actions and it has been used since the beginning of Gen 1: the Self KO Clause.
The Self KO Clause was used in the first Pokémon tournament in History: the Poké Cup (which was organized by Nintendo in 1997). The clause was used again in other tournaments of Gen 1 like the Pika Cup, the Petit Cup, the Nintendo Cup 98, the Nintendo Cup 99 and the Prime Cup. The Clause returned in Gen 2 with Little Cup, Challenge Cup and the Gen 2 versions of the Poké Cup and the Prime Cup. Currently, Aurodian and Lutra are hosting a Pokémon Stadium 1 tournament where the Self-KO Clause is been enforced like in the real game (click here to read the latest post of that tournament).
The Self KO Clause basically tells the players "if you click these moves (Self-Destruct, Explosion, Misty Explosion, Destiny Bond, Perish Song) when you only have one pokémon left, you lose", so as you can see, Nintendo and Showdown do enforce rules that restrict the players' actions, the Self KO Clause is the proof.
By the way, in the Poké Cup tournament of 1997, the moves Dig and Fly were allowed, in fact, those moves are still allowed in the Japanese Gen 1 tournaments despite the existence of the glitch. If the Japanese can allow Dig and Fly and their glitch, I'm sure that we can allow those moves with a Clause.
Before we finish, I want to clarify that my petition is just to unban Dig and Fly, not to add their Semi-invincibility glitch. I'm only mentioning the Semi-invincibility Clause to prevent players from abusing the glitch in case it were added in the future.
Well, that's all for now, thank you for reading my post and for taking my petition into consideration. Greetings.
