Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Use this thread to share the teams that you built for UPL XIII, whether they were for yourself or a teammate! The teams don't have to be winning ones and you don't even need to have loaded them, anything you built for the purposes of this tour is a proper fit for this. Anything you forgot to add to your commencement shout-out post? Add it here, too!
Twave 2 attacks Arceus Fairy is a great anti balance tool while not being fodder for most hyper offense threats thanks to twave. I frequently take away as much defense as I can while still living 2 koraidon hits after rocks, so I can hit harder against ho-oh and eternatus teams especially. This moveset is to be used as a mid game balance breaker, so pair it with anti hyper offense and anti stall tools. I didn't get to use it in UPL because of an act win, but I think it is as good as utility sets and CM sets (ID CM sets are best used in endgames especially against HO builds so I don't even think they compete much)
Koraidon as a defensive tera is really good. Compared to a lot of options that can hold off the threats they beat, Koraidon can often setup or ko while boosting speed. The 4th moveslot is important but flexible, with sub, taunt, and fighting stab being great options. Flare blitz is important to remain a immediate threat into steel types because the purpose of Koraidon defensive tera is a reversal against other hyper offense threats and so KOing a back Zacian is crucial. Healing wish is great with all Koraidon but especially this one imo. I used dark, but I think steel, electric, ghost and ground resist teras are a great way to gain an edge in offense vs offense matchups. Fire and Dragon will always be the most likely to break a balance build, but I think defensive tera is more likely to be helpful vs offense.
Hello! I had a great time this UPL and although we didn't win the tour, I feel I did quite well, especially in SV since I went 6-2.
First and foremost, I'd like to thank my support this tour, you guys kept some of my shit in check and gave me the metric ton of games I asked for every week. Would not have been able to get back into form without it. Thanks FritoKateHoennseptileJojenSkyiewS-MatrixColinLanaZesty43EnvyTerracottaOreoSpeedrunsPigbeeef

me vs Shuwri (W) Replay
I had played some SV Ubers again in ISTT and ULT right before UPL, but mostly just spammed webs and some glimm HO without really thinking too much on the metagame. As such, I wanted to test out some more BO builds that would give me relatively neutral matchup spreads, while still being comfortable. In general, I do not really like the scarfers in this tier bar Koraidon (though that is a commonly shared opinion). At the time I made this team, I felt that most speed would be fine to deal with using Arceus / Zacian-C / Lando-T. This week, I was also testing out a lot of Offensive Ho-Oh. I felt really good about this mon, especially paired with Twave bold Ogre, as it gave me a little more pressure on Etern and Kyogre entries, while also making me better into CM Arceus formes.
I didn't really have a grasp on what Shuwri would bring prior to this TBH. I had a guess that there may be some phys offense like Korai Zac Lando, decent chance of some HO since it was W1 and its an easy way to start off the season. Jolly EK gave me a chance into some of those structures especially in case i loaded into a EK mirror (which could be dangerous considering I was reliant on Zacian-C and my own EK heavily in korai ogre ek matchups). I loaded into glimm double prio offense, which is a decent enough matchup, though volatile.
This week I didn't have great tspike outs tbh, I don't really like fitting Tera Poisons on a lot of teams and especially on offenses like this, they can be difficult to fit without glimm/etern/cm arc. I got lucky with my Zacian critting Koraidon to win this, and I think the structure itself is flawed into a lot of offense in general. But some of the ideas here were strong, like Jolly Silk Scarf + Tera Koraidon to get past a lot of setup cheese, even if the entire team wasn't.
hacker vs fade (W) Replay
Honestly, I figured fade would bring either some breaker spam BO or this glimm webs team that hoenn was testing the week before. Regardless, some offense that can trade mons 1 for 1 consistently and set up an endgame was probably the best for this. Kate and I were messing with Etern and thinking of making it fit these teams without just going Beam / LO. Sitrus came up and we ended up being able to eat a Koraidon 5-hit without rocks up. You can see it in the game above, but this set / a lot of the sets on this team aim to take positive trades and force the momentum of the game in your favor. This kind of team is what I feel is most consistent in this meta, and I loaded this sort of structure all season.

me vs Lana (W) Replay
I was still pretty high on Ekiller as a whole, but wanted to run with a Kingambit as well considering my previous weeks usage. In general, it was pretty early in the season and I felt quite good to run HO. I wanted to make sure I wasn't tspike weak like previous week, but I wasn't very high on running LO / Beam Etern on Ekiller Koraidon structures. Throughout the week I tested various versions of this structure, such as SD custap don / DD LO Zekrom / rockless Lando, but Zacian-C was by far the most consistent slot thanks to the speed control against other Korai Zacian offenses.
Specific set innovations on this team:
Glimmora @ Mental Herb
Ability: Toxic Debris
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Mortal Spin
- Mud Shot
- Sludge Bomb
This set aims to eat Deo-S Taunt + Psycho Boost, letting me get Rocks + Mud Shot on it consistently. Getting rocks on Deo-S is huge for the opposing Deo-S + Lunala matchup, as I think that matchup is doomed if I lose sucker wars with this structure otherwise. Sludge was to help cover the Hatt / Scarf Bee + Pagos structures, which were two things I had seen Lana bring in WCOP / other tours. Otherwise I would probably have to win Sucker War or run Tera Dark Zacian / Tera Ghost Ekiller, which I would prefer not to click over Normal Ekiller / Fire Gambit.
Kyogre is ev'd to live a LO CC in sun and trade back with it (most of the time lol). Sitrus helps vs Lando/Ho-Oh offenses in case I take an Ogre / Korai trade early. I was testing Lum + Sub / Lum 3a as well, but having no Thunder made opposing Kyogre too difficult without an Arceus-Electric / Zekrom / Etern on my team.
I got the lead matchup I wanted, and Glimmora blocked Bee from getting webs up entirely. I had to pop tera for the Zacian-C afterward, but after the Zacian trades, the game was pretty straight forward playing with double prio into Koraidon. I'm still a little surprised Balloon Gambit wins the 1v1 vs IDCM Arceus-Flying, but this mon is kind of crazy so I get it.
I wanted to just pass a consistent idea I had tested the weeks prior, so went with the classic Twave Ogre + Taunt CM Fairy + Off Ho-Oh to beat Eternatus structures. Taunt SD Korai would punish the balances that Vitiate tended to bring at this point, and the rest of the team was just consistent defensive tools that deal with opposing Zacian / Kyogre, especially since this team was Scarfless as well. There's not much else interesting about this team, but I think the structure itself is still consistent, though some HO games can be difficult without a fatter Arceus or a Scarfer. We misplayed this one, but it happens.
I mainly wanted to cover a couple structures vs 8truc: stall and some SD Korai BO. I was REALLY close to loading a third Ekiller, but thought I would just get bad matchups this time. Figured Waterceus would be quite good, either Wisp or Psyshock. I saw Bacon use Psyshock Water in WCOP and thought it + Crunch Zac would be enough for most stall, while still having defensive utility into a lot of offenses. I liked having offensive Twave Kyogre since we had LO Etern, because it would still help vs opposing Etern / Korai while being much stronger into opposing Ogre than standard Bold Ogre. SD Korai is Boots + Scale, which is kind of underwhelming offensively. Access to Flare Blitz Tera Fire on Boots sets really blows through a lot of the Arceus formes and stuff that usually trouble this set, and with OffOgre + Psy Water + LO Etern I figured opposing Etern was okay.
I think I played this game alright expecting some sort of SD/BU Tera Normal/Fire Ekiller, but BU Tera Water was pretty much unplayable with the teras I had + lack of wisp on Waterceus. Happens, good prep from my opponent!
I prepped this for KeshBa, but the prep still applied to fish for the most part. I had noticed my lack of speed control and wanted to make sure I at least load some sort of Scarfer this week. Truth be told this team has some really rough lines into LO Etern. It's totally playable but you have to get most clicks right and be super proactive. I ran our classic Etern (named Voyagetern) to shore up the Koraidon matchup in case I loaded into some form of taunt / sub Koraidon. Wisp CM Arceus-Water was something I had seen Icemaster use in previous games, and I liked how it compressed a Wincon + defensive mon with good phys offense matchup. Koraidon went Clear Amulet alongside the Scale Shot set I had used in the previous week, as a more offensive short-term variant to trade with Landorus-T.
I played my early/mid game really well IMO. But that doesn't matter because I choked vs Kingambit in the endgame, when I had a 100% win line with my Waterceus (especially since I had confirmed that fish's Zacian had no Wild, which i just forgot the turn after lol). Unfortunate about this one, because I would've gone x-1 (and the 1 to an unwinnable matchup), but it happens. I misplayed, and to make up for it, I won every SV game afterwards.
Envy went in this week, and did quite well this tour overall! I'm proud of their run, but their obsession with CM Taunt Fairy started here... They were generally pretty comfortable with BO/Balance structures in this tier, and I hadn't built any Groudon structures prior to this. I figured SpDef Ho-Oh + Twave Ogre + Taunt CM Fairy + Steel Koraidon gave us enough tools to win any sort of Offense/Balance game, without an awful HO matchup. Classic Scale Boots set again, but we wanted to use more Steel this time as we hadn't used Steel Korai as much as we should have. Honestly, this game kinda sucked, opposing Kyogre froze our Eternatus and we lost a Koraidon tie to lose the game, but Default's prep did have us on lock (maybe I had passed these fatter Fairy squads to Envy/Hacker too much lol).
W5 -
i took a break week this time but I still built for Envy this week.
Colin's scout was very offense heavy and lacked Kingambits or Ting-Lus and Tera Dark mons. This seemed like a perfect week to load Agility Lunala and/or DD Beam Groundceus. I figured the best structure this fit on was Deoxys HO, as I was not a big fan of fitting either of these sets on BO, and in general I was not a big fan of webs structures either. I went Sash Deo, as I noticed that most teams would antilead Kyogre into most HO leads. As such, getting two layers guaranteed against any non Hatt team gave us a lot of momentum to work off. On preview, our call into this was perfect. Seems like Colin also caught on, with a surprise Tera Dark Koraidon to shut down our Lunala.
I hadn't used any Deoxys structures until now, and figured I could improve upon the team I passed Envy the week before. I wanted Deo to punish Kyogre lead teams much harder, and Counter hadn't been used in a while either. Figured CounterCoat was optimal into any structures I expected on lead. DD Ice Beam Groundceus was still optimal into the Lando/Gliscors I expected to load into (though I didn't click correctly into them). I had noticed people going Etern on Agil Lunala and tox into recover stalling, so figured Psyshock punished that appropriately while making me less tera reliant into oneshotting Koraidon. I figured Fight Caly + SS Zacian covered Kingambit anwyays. I prepped for IDCM decently well / ditto semiwell, but this team had some structural flaws I never addressed, such as no ground resist/immunity for ditto ripping my groundceus, or ditto + idcm beating my way of dealing with idcm. Ultimately, it was a hard matchup to play into, and i lucked a bit into opposing IDCM fairy (sacred sword calcs are far worse than I thought), but i bluffed a tera fire/water against the opposing ditto and won off that. I think this mistake in builder could be attributed to two things: lack of testing this week entirely, and lack of phazing/taunt in my teams. Seems like I was loading into IDCM structures almost every week haha.
Our team had pretty low Ting-Lu usage, and I figured Ainz, who really likes using off Etern structures, would be the best person to build one into. I had been meaning to test CM Twave Ogre + Arceus-Electric because of how good it is into opposing Ogre structures, and Air Balloon Ogre helped the opposing Groundceus matchup. Voyagetern + a somewhat bulked Ogre + PR Zacian covered Koraidon, and I preferred Tera Steel Arceus-Electric into someone who had a chance of loading IDCM NDM (tera steel still covers Etern enough). I think the team was pretty good into the structure we loaded into, and though the team didn't win, I think the team was cool and relatively widely usable.
My BO3 journeys:
Not going to share the SS / SM teams cuz I don't build either tier. Just thanks to Kate, Aberforth, Zesty43, Terracotta for covering me in those tiers for 3 weeks. SS and SM are very fun, but I really despise playing into Zygarde.
I was relatively inspired by Frito in WC finals with the fat sd don, and figured I'd try my spin on a structure like that. Talking to some of the people I tested with, I had suspicions that Steel Zac + Groundy was a good call into me, and I didn't want my Lando/Zac/SD Korai usage to be entirely exploited. I think Fc is a really good builder in general, so its hard to really exploit holes in his team preferences. I figured I would try to switch it up with a Scarf Koraidon + no Zacian structure. SD Twave Don was pretty good at forcing Twave onto Arceus, and a lot of structures rely entirely on Lando / opposing Ogre to pivot into Don. Wisp Fairy + Air Balloon Gambit + Scarf Korai covered a lot of the defensive flaws with OffOgre + SD Don + LO Eternatus, and overall gave me a decent balance of power and defensive utility.
I'd like to say I landed quite a good matchup, especially with the Thunder Para limiting Fc to a single spike on lead. My groudon was ev'd for +3 Zacian BB but alas two +1 Blades were far too much for this mon (on a side note, do I have to straight up run no attack invest Impish on SD Don? I feel like every time I've tested this set, I've been too weak or too frail, and finding that balance really sucks). In the end, Scarf Korai was able to load into a good Deo-S matchup, and I did not get swept by a last mon Gambit again.
I was really looking forward to a rematch with Shuwri, after getting a bit lucky vs him w1. I wanted to branch out a bit more structurally, and make sure my HO / Stall matchups were covered at a minimum (also BO ofc but its much easier to handle BO/balance naturally with the HO measures). This team was schizo built with like 40 diff versions, with the initial structure being entirely hazardless and relying on anti-lead Lum Ogre to win games. The original six had kingambit over Zacian, Fairy over Ghost, and Etern over Groudon, but I just found Etern to be a deadweight in a lot of hazard heavy matchups without consistent speed control / any boots on my team. Kyogre is just fast Lum antilead, creeped for some arbitrary point in the 240s, and Koraidon is standard Fire taunt. I didn't actually get to show off a lot of the techs on the team, but Groudon was jolly double hazard fling (as a way to para taunt Deo-S lead, while also helping vs taunt arcs). The speed lets you trade it vs Kyogre pretty consistently as well, but I don't think I ever even sent it out this game. I wanted to use NDM as my anti substeel Korai mon, but in a lot of games, it just had trouble winning vs Ho-Oh structures. I had tested with fast SD NDM at other points in the season, but Skyiew came in clutch with the fast NDM TR idea, which actually covered a lot of HO matchups incredibly well. I wanted an Arceus form last with relatively neutral matchup spread that could phaze a lot of things out. Generally, mono judge arcs need to be a type with no immunities, but Ghost is less disadvantaged into Taunt Koraidon than Water, and Fairyceus doesn't fit well. Ghost pressures Ho-Oh much more than mono Judge Ground, so it fit well here. I landed a good matchup, and was able to win pretty cleanly thanks to Taunt SD Fire Korai, Sub Zac, and Bold Roar Ghost.
Finals had my nerves clutched up but I was pretty determined to win this one. The Dialgas were the team I least liked facing, as they tended to use more off-the-wall stuff, and it was harder for me to get a clear idea of a trend vs them. I had a couple structures mocked up, but figured that I wanted to actually use the ladder to prep for once. Colin had showed me a Twave 2A Fairy at some point earlier in the season, and it seemed like a good pick for this week as well. I remembered Shuwri using a leftovers Kyogre w1 vs me, and I really liked the idea of it, so I built various Ogre Fairy Lando sixes and tested them on ladder. Truthfully, Kyogre could be max speed straight up, but its hard to drop bulk at times. I just let it creep some of the off ho-ohs / ada ndm on ladder instead which usually covers most non arc/korai/zac mons. Ditto + Gambit helped cover the awkward matchups into Zacian structures, and this Fairyceus puts a lot of pressure on teams that are reliant on Ho-Oh as their Fairy switch in. I got a good matchup, some favorable luck (though I believe I was favored regardless). I've placed a couple set variants on the paste linked, because I was not really set on the right set, and I kind of went off vibes. It's a very flexible six sets wise, and ditto can be replaced with a wide variety of mons based on the matchup.
That's everything I loaded! If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to me directly and I'd be happy to talk through it more. I built far more than this that I might dump at some point, but overall I do enjoy how the tier is right now. I think I get a little schizo in the builder about webs / kyogre mirrors, but the tier is far better than it was the last time I played it (pre mirai ban / early post mirai ban).
I think pretty much a majority of the decisions in most builder and in-game are decided by these 5 mons. Koraidon and Kyogre feel slightly above everything else, though not crazy ahead.
Kyogre Twave / Lead shenanigans just end games if you click correctly. Obviously, there's a level of nuance and the "correct" clicker wins, but it can be difficult to play this out without just bringing your own Ogre or Elecceus and trying to trade health off. There's always a level of fear pivoting in Koraidon and getting Twaved, and Kyogre can easily tech to get extremely positive trades against other Kyogre / Eternatus (like Lum / speed creep tiers / CM). Kyogre checks the entire tier while its healthy, and it can be frustrating to lose games to a full Para from Twave/Thunder, Ice Beam just instafreezing your Etern/Korai (something that happened quite often this UPL). It just generates the most value out of any non Koraidon mon in this tier if you click correctly, and has no prerequisites to making this progress.
Not much else to say on Zacian-C / Ho-Oh, but Eternatus is a really flexible mon in the builder. Most people defaulted to Beam agil / 4a, or Spdef, but there's quite a bit you can do. We created super physdef sitrus to take on Koraidon, but I had tested bulky recover tox beam to lure ho-oh, and there's quite a lot of different EV thresholds you can do with this mon in general.
Not part of the VR above, but a lot of CM Arceus formes run > 323 or even close to max now. Obviously, Lunala is to blame for some of it, and CM Arc mirrors are incredibly important in this tier. But super super slow and fat Arceus is still amazing at point blank tanking a lot of ridiculous attacks and trading back. It can be frustrating that your fast Arceus is gatekept by Koraidon oneshotting it with LO or Tera, so there's always drawbacks to both the speed/bulk anyways.
Thanks for the fun season, and I hope to play more this year.
Hello I'd like to share some of my RBY Ubers teams, hope this helps show the greater Ubers community what RBY Ubers truly is since this tier is unfortunately filled with misconceptions. Click the mons for the pastes and the link below for the replay
Week 1 vs. King Billu G2
Starting out with the six boom team. I actually didn't have the intention to make a six boom team it just turned out this way. Gengar + Exeggutor + Cloyster is a strong offensive core in both OU and Ubers and the idea of the team is to gain an advantage then trade down with Explosion. If you preserve your Cloyster it is favorable into common lastmons like Tauros, while Recovery on Mewtwo and Mew let you fend off Zapdos. I believe Psychic + Night Shade to be the best Gengar set in Ubers since lead Starmie is a lot more rare, while Psychic is important for other Gengar and Night Shade is essential for Exeggutor, Mewtwo, and Mew. Since Gengar is a lead that likes to explode early you don't really see Slowbro that often. Since this was week 1 I don't remember exactly why my Snorlax was Amnesia, could have been a hole in Billu's scout or something but I honestly forgot my reasoning. This was also my first time using Twave + Attack + Soft-Boiled + Explosion Mew in an Ubers set, which I will refer to "support Mew" from now on. The main reason for support Mew here was I wanted Twave, Soft-Boiled, and Explosion on the same set. Twave to support my slower mons like Egg, Cloy, Lax, Recovery just so I had some defensive utility, and Explosion since momentum is really important for this team to function.
Week 2 vs. BeeOrSomething G2
This is a team that I built around a specific opening line. Generally, in RBY Ubers, after a lead Mewtwo or Mew blows up an opposing lead, the most common responses are Mewtwo or Exeggutor. Both of these mons give Jynx free sleep. Therefore, my idea was to lead with Mew, blow it up, then revenge with Jynx to get ahead on sleep, which is exactly what happened this game. Tauros and Lax are simply "load the good Pokemon" while Starmie provides twave support and softens the ice weakness that bull + lax bring. This team actually works really well into most leads since the plan is always to blow up Mew. The one shaky matchup is Gengar since it outspeeds and can land Hypnosis. My plan into Gengar was to just sleepsack Jynx and play 6v5, which isn't great but it's definitely still playable.
Week 4 vs. Sabelette G2
Unlike the previous two teams this one is meant to take a much slower pace. The ultimate goal of the team is to win with Rhydon after spreading para throughout the opposing team. In hindsight, the team seems really passive, which was shown by the fact that Mewtwo completely ran over my team after the Alakzam got frozen. Lead Alakazam is meant to lure in Exeggutor, as that is a common turn 1 switch into Alakazam. Exeggutor getting lured in and taking twave and at least one seismic toss really opens Slowbro and Rhydon. Slowbro and Rhydon work in tandem, falling back on each other defensively and spreading/exploiting paralysis. Swords Dance Mono EQ Mew is Rhydon's partner in crime, but I think the lack of Explosion defnitely was a mistake in hindsight, as this team lacked any kind of offensive pressure without paralysis. My G3 was 5 of the same mons with Tauros > Rhydon, and adding this fast mon defnitely improved the team.
Week 5 vs. YBW G1
Here's an example of a team meant to facilitate Swords Dance Mew. Alakazam and Starmie spread para, Zam uses Kinesis to fend off Amnesia Mewtwo. YBW generally doesn't load a lot of twaves so I thought SD Mew would be great into him. Thunder Lax is more of a one-off gimmick to snipe Cloyster with. Amnesia Blizzard Mewtwo is meant to lure in mons to force damage then explode, poking a massive hole for Mew to sweep with afterwards. Unfortunately this team was quite weak to Zapdos and I definitely got punished for that, but I was still a big fan of this team despite the loss.
Week 7 vs. Unowndragon G3
This team is kinda like the team I brought into YBW but meant to enable Barrier2 rather than Swords Dance Mew since I felt it was better into UD's scout. Tbolt Tauros is meant to lure Cloyster, since if Tauros removes Cloyster Barrier2 is opened up. Apart from that it's a similar formula to a lot of my other teams, a lot of thunder waves and explosions, while if Zam uses Kinesis then gets sacked that gives my Mewtwo free setup (this game also had the funny gif). Overall I'm happy with this team. I generally find Barrier2 difficult to build around since I value both twave and boom a lot, and running neither on my Mewtwo means almost the entire rest of my team needs to hit my "quota" on number of twaves and booms. I had the game setup to allow the Barrier2 win but I unfortunately made a big misplay by not clicking Barrier on a free turn to do so and got punished for it hard.
Semifinals vs. Enigami G1
This is gonna be a short one since I just described a Barrier2 team, mainly highlighting here that Barrier tbolt is also a set. Toxic on Zapdos is meant to be a Rhydon lure as Rhydon had walls my Mewtwo set, but barrier bolt can setup to 999 defense and just stall Rhydon out as toxic kills it (rest rhydon is nonexistent). Apart from that it's the usual have twavers + explosions. I opted for barrier tbolt vs Enigami since he had a lot of ices in scout, so I felt this was less likely to be walled.
I am still proud to announce that I have used Amnesia + Recover + 2 Attacks Mewtwo zero (0) times throughout both UPL and UWL. I do not think the set is unviable but I deliberately have used it zero times to prove that RBY Ubers has moved way beyond the Amnesia war stage.
