I'm quite surprised no one mentioned Choice Scarf Pyroar as a check, but whatever.

Checks: Bellossom and Swanna
Counters: Tangela and Gourgeist-XL

Quite a hard round because a lot of the checks really do struggle versus Kingler if it gets either a boost to Speed or a boost to Attack.

Skuntank @ Choice Band
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Poison Jab
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Crunch

Skuntank works as a counter here. There's not a whole lot that Defensive Rocks Mesprit can do to Skunk here. It can retreat, it can use U-turn to get a small chunk off of Skunk:

0- Atk Mesprit U-turn vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Skuntank: 66-78 (18.9 - 22.4%) -- possible 6HKO after Black Sludge recovery

The Physical Defog set doesn't work well against this Mesprit set so that's why I put up the CB set. Crunch, it's strongest STAB that beats Mes, does well for a defensive Mesprit, bear in mind this is w/ Colbur Berry

252 Atk Choice Band Skuntank Crunch vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Colbur Berry Mesprit: 109-130 (29.9 - 35.7%) -- 36% chance to 3HKO

If it were removed:

252 Atk Choice Band Skuntank Crunch vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Mesprit: 218-260 (59.8 - 71.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Spiritomb @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Calm Mind

Nominating CM Spiritomb as a counter. Mesprit cannot touch Spiritomb (U-turn is like an 18HKO after Leftovers), and Spiritomb just sets up on it.

0- Atk Mesprit U-turn vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Spiritomb: 33-39 (10.8 - 12.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever

So that averages out to 11.8%, and after factoring in Leftovers recovery its doing 5.55% per attack. 1/18 is 0.0555 (repeating), so 18HKO

0 SpA Spiritomb Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Colbur Berry Mesprit: 78-93 (21.4 - 25.5%) -- 0.3% chance to 4HKO
0 SpA Spiritomb Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mesprit: 156-186 (42.8 - 51%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO
Even without setting up you do reasonable amounts to it.

Metang @ Eviolite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 208 Atk / 48 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake
- Toxic

Nominating Metang as a counter. Metang freely sets up rocks against Mesprit and threatens it with Toxic, whereas Mesprit can't do anything back except U-Turn. Metang shrugs off Psychics with ease and does not fear Thunder Wave due to its already low speed.
Unlike other counters, Metang also fears nothing from any other set Mesprit runs - the Offensive Stealth Rock set fails to 3HKO Metang with Hidden Power Ground and gets 3HKOd in return by Meteor Mash. Metang also resists Ice Beam and Dazzling Gleam, Mesprit's more standard coverage moves of choice.
(The EVs provided are to guarantee living two hits from Timid Dark Pulse Skuntank but 252HP/252Atk does just as well at countering Mesprit)

0 SpA Mesprit Psychic vs. 252 HP / 48 SpD Eviolite Metang: 19-22 (5.8 - 6.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0- Atk Mesprit U-turn vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Metang: 32-38 (9.8 - 11.7%) -- possible 9HKO
252 SpA Mesprit Hidden Power Ground vs. 252 HP / 48 SpD Eviolite Metang: 86-102 (26.5 - 31.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

208+ Atk Metang Meteor Mash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mesprit: 102-121 (33.8 - 40.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Banned deucer.

Togedemaru @ Leftovers
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Toxic
- U-turn
- Encore
- Zing Zap/Iron Head

This is a nice check to mesprit, can switch many times in any move, is immune to thunder wave, can encore the rocks/psychic/thunder wave, cripple with toxic, pivot on the switch, and do a decent damage with Zing Zap/Iron Head.

0 SpA Mesprit Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Togedemaru: 66-78 (24.3 - 28.7%)
0- Atk Mesprit U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Togedemaru: 34-40 (12.5 - 14.7%)
252 Atk Togedemaru Zing Zap vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Mesprit: 76-91 (20.8 - 25%)
252 Atk Togedemaru U-turn vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Mesprit: 90-106 (24.7 - 29.1%)

Ferroseed @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 248 HP / 128 Def / 132 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Spikes
- Gyro Ball
- Protect
- Leech Seed

Ferroseed is a simple counter to Mesprit, it sits there eating Psychics for days, and saps health back with Leech Seed, and can abuse these free turns to set up Spikes. If Mesprit tries to U-turn into a better match up, Ferroseed can always land a parting blow in Iron Barbs, and in a 1v1 situation, Ferroseed can get a free Leech Seed on whatever comes in from the U-turn. Potential Thunder Wave from Mesprit isn’t the biggest concern due to Ferroseed’s already poor speed, although the occasional full paralysis can be a factor in a different match up.

Nomming Ghostium Z haunter as a check, while haunter doesn't like to be Psychic'ed,when haunter manages to get a switch-in ,NEN 1OHKOs mesprit safely and is a nice offensive pokémon in general

Oricorio-Sensu @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Dancer
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Taunt

Noticed that all of the checks/counters on here were either Dark or Steel, so let's spice it up some. Oricorio-G is a check and does the job pretty well. Does have some potential trouble switching in due to Thunder Wave or even a U-Turn, but when it's in, it's exploiting this Mesprit. Taunt shuts down all of the utility options, and from there all Mesprit can do is U-Turn or Psychic...either way is fine with Oricorio to get a free Calm Mind. This check is less about forcing Mesprit out and more about exploiting Mesprit for free setup. Still good.

Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Soft-Boiled
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast

Standard Clefairy right now. Easily uses Defensive Mesprit as setup bait with either Stealth Rock or Calm Mind. Can easily pivot in on most Mesprit sets too, requiring they are not running Psyshock that is. This is a counter by the way.

Type: Null @ Eviolite
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Return
- Rest
- Iron Defense

Pretty simple counter. Type:Null just takes advantage of defensive mesprit for free setup as it does nothing to it. The only thing mesprit can do is u-turn out to a mon that can threaten it. Type:Null doesn’t even care about thunder wave because of rest.

Silvally-Ghost @ Ghost Memory
Ability: RKS System
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Parting Shot
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower / Thunderbolt
- Defog

Nominating Silvally-Ghost as a check. It outspeeds, can 2HKO Defensive Mesprit using its STAB move and can take Psychic several times thanks to its pretty decent natural bulk.
Furthermore, Silvally-Ghost allows you to remove Mesprit Stealth-Rocks and bring in another mon safely using Parting Shot.

252 SpA Silvally-Ghost Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mesprit: 204-240 (56 - 65.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Mesprit Psychic vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Silvally-Ghost: 105-124 (31.7 - 37.4%) -- 88.8% chance to 3HKO
0- Atk Mesprit U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Silvally-Ghost: 25-29 (7.5 - 8.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Ability: Sticky Hold
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Bug Buzz
- Focus Blast
- Sludge Bomb
- Spikes

Good check: bugbuzz ohkos.

OFC drops were wrong. This should be valid before the week ends, but in case NU doesn't want to give it to PU, I will post this:

:dab: (Pawniard) @ Eviolite
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance

Pawniard as a counter to Colbur mesprit since it takes little damage from uturn and is immune to psychic. Not a worthless pick since it also beats skuntank the S rank and 1v1s ferroseed, clefairy and spiritomb without much trouble. So yea it is viable.
