UU First Team

Howdy y'all. Like the thread title states the is my first UU and actual first competitive battling squad. I'm not new the the whole Pokemon strategy and tactics lark as I have played the games for several years now in the 3rd generation; gyms, elite four, battle tower and uncompetitive buddies. Not the most impressive resume I know. Anyway, intro aside. This team is basically made up of my favorites from past games and hasn't actually won a game online yet... Not for one for trying though, I just get stuffed in a rut by someone clearly with more time than me. Here we go...

427.png

Buneary @ Burn Orb
Ability: Klutz
EV: 252 Spd / 252 Atk/ 6 HP
Jolly Nature
-Switcheroo
-Ice Punch
-Return
-Jump Kick

Yeah I know the lil' guy is, well still a little guy and his evolved form would pack a greater punch. But he's nostalgic to me and I'd never dream of neutering him into a Lopunny. That aside, he's quick enough to do the little task I set out for him and steal a cherished item and leave a burn to remember him by. Return is great for normal STAB and Ice Punch and Jump Kick are there to give me coverage on types I don't have in the main body. Doesn't take long for him to be dog food but still gives a little problem my foe could do without.

257-m.png

Blaziken @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EV: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 6 HP
Adamant Nature
-Agility
-Baton Pass
-Blaze Kick
-Sky Uppercut

Blaziken is eloped with a Baton Passer role. I figure that in UU he has the capabilities to sweep fairly successfully but he's the only Pokemon I like who has access to Agility and Baton Pass. These two are necessary for setting up my sweepers of choice Ampharos and Cacturne as both have lack luster speed stats. Obviously, Blaze Kick and Sky Uppercut for reliable STAB which is always my preferred attacking option. Ice cool and no risks.

332-m.png

Cacturne @ Bright Powder
Ability: Sand Veil
EV: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP
Adamant Nature
-Sucker Punch
-Sandstorm
-Seed Bomb
-Double Team

Right. Cacturne has a decent enough attack stat to be in a standard battling environment, but is let down by his other stats. Speed sucks out loud and defenses are almost as bad. Therefore, I've tried to compensate for that with partnering him up with Baton Passing Blazkien. In the event that that isn't an option EV's in speed are maxed to give me a fighting chance and Sucker Punch is there to hit anyone too aggressive. To make up for paper thin defenses, a cocktail of Sand Veil, Bright Powder and Double Team make him a sod to pin down and nail. In the meantime, bulky waters take respectable damage from STAB boosted seed bomb.

181.png

Ampharos @ Magnet
Ability: Static
EV: 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP
Modest Nature
-Thunder Wave
-Thunderbolt
-Signal Beam
-Power Gem

Ampharos is my most reliable sweeper and gets me the bulk of all my KO's. When paired with Blaziken he's definitely one dangerous sheep. When Cacturne's been given that luxury, Ampharos has to make his own way in life which he does reasonably well. Speed EV's give him enough pace to stick anyone not awake yet (a few around in UU too) and combined with Thunder Wave he can just about hold him own. He's naturally got decent defenses to let me get this far too. Thunderbolt + STAB + Magnet is a nifty combination that deals with ever present water types and birds, his other moves are just for the depth that a sweeper needs.

282.png

Gardevoir @ Leftovers
Ability: Trace
EV: 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP
Modest Nature
-Psychic
-Calm Mind
-Substitute
-Will-o-wisp

For a psychic type, Gardevoir is actually quite bulky therefore substitute can be effective to stall whilst knocking up Special Attack and Defense. Will-o-wisp can effectively boost her regular defenses too. Providing I don't run into Absol before Blaziken's got there, Gardevoir can be boosted to kingdom come and be a menace to take down. Then she lets rip with STAB psychic and not a lot in UU can stand up to that.

141.png

Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EV: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 6 HP
Adamant Nature
-Waterfall
-X-Scissor
-Stone Edge
-Swords Dance

Kabutops is a physical version of Ampharos. A no frills sweeper. Swords Dance and a hefty attack stat is nothing to scoff at and then he's got the diversity to hit a Super Effective on most type, with Waterfall and Stone Edge gaining STAB. Although I didn't opt for rain dance to sync in with Swift Swim. You can often count on a water type in the opposition line up to provide something to switch into. This being said, he also benefits from my one weather condition, per say, as rock takes no damage from Sandstorm. Speed and Attack EV's for obvious reasons for a shellfish with this job.

So that's my team. Yes, there are three sweepers and no real stall. But I like to rely on offence being a good defence. The drawback of that I can't have moves with a chance of not hitting when I need them, hence nothing really over base 90. That's okay though because more times than once can I make my own scenarios with external moves. So please rate, be critical. But there's no need to tell me something I don't already know unless you've got a good viable solution. Thanks in advance guys.

Your team is obviously trying to be offensive; using Blazekin's speed boosts and your recipients raw power to sweep through teams. There are a few big problems. One, none of your sweepers are really strong enough to sweep. Second, Blazekin's baton pass works because of the surprise value; good opponents won't fall for it twice. I'm going to do some serious reworking of your team, so bear with me. However, I think you'll like the finished product :)

This is what my changes look like at a glance, with explanations below:

First off, change out your Lopunny (seriously; evolve it) for a Stealth Rock lead. Stealth Rocks are vital for any offensive team such as yours, turning many 2HKOs into OHKOs through their residual damage. TrickScarf Mesprit is a great choice; she has good power, can cripple an opposing lead, set up SR, and can scout the opposing team with U-Turn

481.png

Mespirit@Choice Scarf
Jolly Nature, 52HP, 204 Att, 252Spe
Stealth Rock
Trick
U-Turn
Zen Headbutt

Depending on the opposing lead, decide what you want to do; Trick your scarf onto bulkier pokemon, and set up Rocks against more powerful ones. If you keep your scarf, Mesprit can revenge kill or Trick it to a wall later on. U-Turn is for scouting and racking up damage while Zen Headbutt is STAB.

Now, let's look at Blazekin. For the most part, he's fine. However, I'd move some speed EVs into HP, giving him the bulk to maybe pass a few more boosts. After an Agility, he only really needs 64 Spe EVs to outspeed everything. Also, change his item to Leftovers; his job is Baton Passing, not Sweeping. I'd also think about giving him Fire Blast over Blaze Kick so he can go mixed, letting him somewhat fulfill a WallBreaking role in addition to Baton Pasing. If you do so, change the EVs and Nature to Rash/192 Att/252SpA/64 Spe.

Which brings us to Cacturne. First off, Double Team is illegal in competitive play. Second, Cacturne really needs permanent sandstorm to be effective. Third, relying on evasion luck to propel you to victory isn't exactly the best strategy... it's just luck. A much better Grass-type to use would be Leafeon:

Spr_4p_470_s.png

Leafeon@Life Orb/Leftovers
Adamant Nature, 180HP, 252Att, 76Spe
Swords Dance
Leaf Blade
Return
Synthesis

Leafeon has great bulk, and can boost her already good attack with Swords Dance. Leaf Blade is for STAB, and Return hits pokemon like Fire-Types and Fliers hard. Synthesis is for recovery, and boosts Leafeon's longevity. I'd recommend the Life Orb for her item since she has a way to restore HP, though Leftovers add considerable bulk. The EVs max out Attack and increase bulk, while a few go into speed so she can make the most of her Agility boost.

Now onto your other recipient, Ampharos. For the most part, I actually like Amphy. However, replace Thunder Wave with HP Grass, and make the item a Life Orb. Like with Blazekin and Leafeon, you could afford to move a few Speed EVs into HP.

Gardevoir needs to go for a few reasons. First off, she's your third bug weakness, with only one resist. Because your team doesn't really spread status, she's also to slow to be an effective Calm Mind user for you. She's a fine pokemon, just not a good fit here. I'd replace her with a Curse Miltank:

241_miltank_1_f.png

Miltank@Leftovers
Ability: Scrappy
Careful Nature, 252HP, 4Def, 252Sp.Def
Milk Drink
Heal Bell
Curse
Return/Body Slam

I like Miltank for this team for a few reasons. First off, she can set up in the face of many teams, netting you a sweep if you can remove the opponent's Fighting-types. Second, she gives you a status absorber and provides support. Nothing on your team appreciates taking status, but Miltank shrugs it off thanks to Heal Bell. Heal Bell also removes status from the rest of your team, giving other team members a fresh chance. The idea of this set is simple: Curse up until you're +6, using Milk Drink and Heal Bell as necessary. From there, just let loose with Body Slam. Body Slam has less power than Return, but can spread paralysis, which is much appreciated by the rest of your team. Ghosts aren't a problem thanks to Scrappy. The EVs maximize Special Bulk since Attack and Defense won't be an issue after multiple Curses. In short, she provides offense and support at the same time, a rare and valuable trait.

Lastly, we have Kabutops. Kabutops functions best as a Rain Dance sweeper; it just isn't quite strong or fast enough without Weather support. I'd replace him with a revenge killer. Dugtrio is a great choice, trapping problematic pokemon such as Steels with Arena Trap and KOing them:

Spr_4h_051.png

Dugtrio@Choice Band
Jolly Nature, 252Att, 4SpD, 252Spe
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sucker Punch
Pursuit

Come in on something that's causing you problems, such as Registeel, and KO it as it can't switch out. Earthquake is STAB, while Stone Edge nails fliers. Sucker Punch is priority, while Pursuit can nail fleeing Ghosts such as Mismagius.

Mismagius could also be used in this slot if you want another Special Attacker, but I think you should be fine.

I know that's a ton, and even though there are some major changes I think I kept the main idea of your team. I hope that helps, and good luck.

Yeah cheers dude I seriously appreciate someone with experience slowing down and explaining things for me. I like the fact that we kept Blaziken and Ampharos and if the new additions get me that first competetitive win then I'm sure I've found some new favourites. Thanks again dude.

Howdy fellas. Just a quick update if y'all really wanna know.

Can't get me grubby paws on a Mespirit. I'm ashamed to say I don't have a Sinnoh region game. Please don't judge. Anyway, trawling round the internet I find that Aerodactyl is also UU?? Seems pretty unlikely, but who am I to complain when he fits in perfectly. So I've taken sense to drop Buneary as a severely depressed suicide lead and the dude from the tree sap is taking heed.

As of now, team current consists of Blaziken, Ampharos, Cactune, Gardevoir and Kabutops. The final three are probably on their way out as soon as I breed and trade suitable replacements. And the following Aerodactyl as a suicide lead... sorta.

142.png

Aerodactyl @ *undecided*

-Crunch

Still open for suggestions, especially for Dactyl's item slot. And can someone definitely confirm that he's still a UU? Cheers partners.

Aerodactyl is unfortunately OU. If Mesprit is proving to be problematic, you could just use TrickScarf Claydol instead. It's less powerful and more defensive, but it keeps an important Ground immunity (though Leafeon can take a few Earthquakes) and still does basically the same thing Mesprit did:

Spr_3r_344.png

Claydol@Choice Scarf
Bold Nature, 252HP,252Def, 4SpD
Trick
Stealth Rock
Rapid Spin/Explosion
Earth Power/Explosion

The idea is the same as Mesprit; Trick off your scarf against bulky 'mons, and set up Rocks on more offensive ones while saving your scarf for later. Stealth Rock gives you the all-important hazards. Rapid Spin is highly recommended in the third slot to clear hazards, though Explosion is an option for this team since it's so offensively oriented. The last slot can either go to Earth Power for STAB or Explosion to take out an opposing pokemon. Peronally, I prefer Earth Power on Claydol since you need his Ground immunity.

Unfortunately, he'll bring you up to 3 Water weaknesses. Luckily, Ampharos and Leafeon can both take hits and threaten, especially with HP EVs. The only truly common non-Rain Dance offensive waters in UU are Feraligatr and Azumarill anyways, and Leafeon counters them almost perfectly.

Mmm that's a shame. No matter though, I quite like this Claydol with rapid spin to mess around he opposing lead. But I guess there isn't any point in wasting Dactyl, so I'll make a OU team when this has got a few wins under it's belt. Cheers again buddie, I hope once I get this team together we can make you proud. :p

Edit: Just a shame that Claydol is real pig ugly...

Howdy y'all. After serious thinking and then serious rethinking I've come up with a team that might just be the balanced offensive squad I've been looking for. I'd like to credit 2sly4u greatly for this; as most of the serious brain power came from his suggestions and without him I'd still be balancing a Buneary in the face of a Hitmontop. Anyway, I've tried to keep as many of his suggestions as possible, although I did have to make one large sacrifice. Here we are...

141.png

Stealth Rock Lead
Kabutops @ Lum Berry
Ability: Swift Swim
EV: 132 HP / 252 ATK / 124 SPD
Adamant Nature
-Stealth Rock
-Stone Edge
-Aqua Jet
-Rapid Spin

Kabutops, was in my original idea and dropped from Sly's suggestions. I did toy with the idea of a Claydol or Mespirit lead but Mespirit was too tricky to obtain for me and Claydol was too ugly and too bulky for my playing style. I couldn't bear to leave out one of my all time favourite Pokemon when he fits into this role nicely either. Instead of Physical Sweeping, Kabutops now takes a lead role. It's set is pretty much a carbon copy of the official Smogon strategy, but hey. The HP EV's let it survive long enough to do more than one thing. So it can Stealth Rock and attack or Stealth Rock and spin. The moves are pretty self explanatory as are the EV's so I won't waste too much time here...

257-m.png

Surprise Baton Pass / Physical Sweeper
Blaziken @ Focus Sash
Ability: Blaze
EV: 252 SPD / 252 ATK / 6 HP
Adamant Nature
-Agility
-Baton Pass
-Blaze Kick
-Sky Uppercut

This is the same Blaziken as I previously used. Just now with Focus Sash in place of the Life Orb. This allows Blaziken to successfully operate as a Baton Passed without compromising attack EV's for HP. As Blaziken as one of the best UU attack stats the life orb is unnecessary. Only problem, if you look at it from a pessimistic state of mind, is he can only EITHER sweep or Baton Pass, not sweep until near KO and then try to Baton Pass as was my previous strategy. Blazikens undoubted speed here lets him use Agility and can then Baton Pass without the fear of being wiped out in one hit. Thanks to his sash. His other option is to utilise both the high speed and attack and just plain sweep with STAB.

359.png

Revenge Killer / Physical Sweeper
Absol @ Life Orb
Ability: Super Luck
EV: 252 ATK / 252 SPD / 6 SP.DEF
Jolly Nature
-Pursuit
-Night Slash
-Swords Dance
-Sucker Punch

This Absol here is something I'm quite proud of. So burst my bubble at your own risk... kidding. Seriously, I've always wanted to use Absol. The Dark type is so ice cool that I'm drawn to it or something, but he's never fitted in and I've opted for equally cool Cacturne. Both Pokemon have similar strengths and weakness' but Absol can overcome them better than Cacturne. We have a large attack stat here, increased by 252 EV's that can be a force to be reckoned with if the opportunity arises. Speed might not be in Ab's favour, but my ploy of Agility and Blaziken can make up for that. The Jolly nature provides more speed than an Adamant one and the attack power isn't really required to be that high, even if it does help you sleep better at night. Besides, a Swords Dance is there for that. Absol's party trick here is Pursuit, that works well as a revenge killer on common Pixie leads like Mespirit that have given Kabutops a nasty shock. They'd be very likely to flee once they spot Ab so a STAB pursuit deals with that.

051.png

Physical Sweeper / Revenge Killer
Dugtrio @ Life Orb
Ability: Areana Trap
EV: 252 ATK / 252 SPD / 6 HP
Jolly Nature
-Earthquake
-Stone Edge
-Aerial Ace
-Substitute

Dugtrio and Absol both share the same role which is why I've dropped Sucker Punch in favour of Aerial Ace. Both are priority moves, but Ace gets fighting types and is the only way I've got of hitting a Super Effective. Dugtrio is naturally quicker than Absol, but with leaky defences; so I've put in a Sub to try to ease that pain away a little. I didn't think Dug needed Pursuit as Absol's already got that covered and Arena Trap is going to see that move slot go to waste most of the time. Dugtrio is jolly to prevent the use of a Choice Scarf and getting wasted by a flying type or electric type. But I think I needed someone who was up there with the fastest in UU without Blaziken's BP help too. Final word, Dugtrio's EV's are maxed out in the fashion of a Physical Sweeper for obvious reasons.

470.png

Physical Wall
Leafeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Leaf Guard
EV: 180 HP / 252Att / 76Spe
Adamant Nature
-Swords Dance
-Leaf Blade
-Return
-Synthesis

Leafeon was a suggestion of Sly's and a pretty good one at that. The team was being hammered by the ever present earthquake so a ground resistance was a necessity. High HP and Attack make Leafeon a bit of a monster wall in the attacking department.

241.png

Mixed Wall / Stall
Miltank @ Leftovers
Ability: Scrappy
EV: 252 HP / 252 SP.DEF / 6 DEF
Careful Nature
-Heal Bell
-Milk Drink
-Curse
-Return

As proof that I can listen and abide. Miltank here is the one recommended by Sly. Does dual roles, most of my team do; which gives an element of surprise to everything I do. Or offers me a plan B should things fall apart. Everything y'all will need to know is above so that concludes my UU team. Ta-da.

EDIT: AMPHAROS OUT, LEAFEON IN.

First off, she's your third bug weakness, with only one resist. Because your team doesn't really spread status, she's also to slow to be an effective Calm Mind user for you. She's a fine pokemon, just not a good fit here. I'd replace her with a Curse Miltank: The HP EV's let it survive long enough to do more than one thing. So it can Stealth Rock and attack or Stealth Rock and spin. The moves are pretty self explanatory as are the EV's so I won't waste too much time here...

Howdy partners. Upon seeking approval from Sly, he said I needed a ground immunity for the team to work. This wasn't overly cool, as I didn't want to change an aesthetically pleasing team. However, I compromised. Dropped out Ampharos (ground weakness) for Leafeon (ground stomper) not an immunity as such but the next best thing.
