Week 39: Hydreigon

:ss/Hydreigon:

Despite only recently dropping to UU, Hydreigon has been making waves in the metagame by taking on many special walls such as Aegislash and Slowking. However, its lack of speed makes Hydreigon vulnerable to foes such as Latias, Keldeo-Resolute, and Mienshao.

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse

Dark pulse is a reliable and quite spammable stab that has good neutral coverage alongside Draco Meteor and Flash Cannon
Draco Meteor is a nuke of a move with sky high power and great neutral coverage that lets
1633276030462.png
break through Pokémon that would normally wall it such as
at +2 and OHKO Pokémon like
without a boost
Nasty Plot boosts
power to insane levels and lets it break through slower, bulkier teams and pokemon that could live an unboosted hit like assault vest

Flash Cannon lets
break pokemon like
and
and is by far its best move to hit
with on the switch

CHOICE SCARF HYDREIGON :choice-scarf:
:bw/hydreigon:
Hydreigon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- U-turn
- Fire Blast / Earth Power / Flash Cannon / Focus Blast

DESCRIPTION:
The Choice Scarf capitalises on Hydreigon's high-speed stat, allowing it to be great speed control. A Speed stat of 98 allows Hydreigon to only be outsped by Salamence, Jirachi, Tentacruel, Thundurus-Therian, Nihilego, Zarude, Keldeo, Latias, Zygarde, Azelf and Regieleki. Nearly all of these Pokémon, given that they are not holding a Choice Scarf as well, do not appreciate Hydreigon’s strong super-effective attacks.

A major advantage Hydreigon has as a revenge-killer and speed control Pokémon over Latias is its wide offensive coverage. Hydreigon’s excessive coverage allows it to become versatile enough to adapt to cover any team’s weaknesses. For instance, Latias fails to attack bulky Fairy and Steel Pokémon, which Hydreigon has ease attacking. Hydreigon’s access to Flamethrower/Fire Blast allows it to reliably check +2 Speed Celesteela, Amoonguss, Roserade, Tangrowth, Tapu Bulu and Zarude. Flash Cannon is excellent to cover Hydreigon’s personal Ice and Fairy weakness, by outspeeding and dealing massive damage to Mamoswine, Hatterene, Togekiss, Tapu Bulu, Diancie, Gardevoir and Sylveon. Earth Power allows Hydreigon to target Lycanroc, Nihilego, Rhyperior, Nidoking, Cobalion and Volcanion. Focus Blast can be used if opposing Dark or Rock-type Pokémon pose a threat to Hydreigon’s teammates. Hydro Pump is an option, though Hydreigon’s STAB moves are arguably more useful.

Draco Meteor is an amazing STAB move that OHKOs or finishes off most sweepers or slower threats, such as Calm Mind boosted Latias, +1 Speed Kommo-O, Life Orb Mienshao, unboosted Salamence, +1 Speed Gyarados, Azelf, Thundurus-Therian, Nidoking, Starmie, Zygarde, Noivern and +2 Speed Polteagiest. Dark Pulse is a reliable STAB attack that is usually a safe option to revenge-kill weakened opponents. Additionally, the 30% flinch chance has the ability to transform the momentum of a match.

Given how the UU metagame has been increasingly focused on hazard stacking, Hydreigon’s Levitate ability granting it immunity to Spikes and Toxic Spikes is beneficial to its role as speed control, increasing its longevity and opportunity to switch in and out constantly with U-turn.

CALCULATIONS:
:hatterene: 252 SpA Hydreigon Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hatterene: 166-196 (52.2 - 61.6%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
:latias: 252 SpA Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. +1 0 HP / 4 SpD Latias: 218-260 (72.4 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

TAUNT HYDREIGON

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Taunt
- Dark Pulse
- Roost
- Draco Meteor

This set pressures walls like chansey, moltres-g, and pokemon that rely on status to wear hydreigon down such as milotic, umbreon, and sub toxic aegislash. LO is for the power to pressure bulkier builds even more and to allow yourself to fire of very powerful draco meteors. Even pokemon such as mandibuzz have to choose between roosting and u-turning or knock

BELCH + BERRY
Hydreigon @ Roseli Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 SpA / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Draco Meteor
- Belch
- Nasty Plot
So this set is meant to lure in checks such as Sylveon and Primarina with Belch + Roseli Berry, allowing it to boost and just kill them:
0 SpA Primarina Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Roseli Berry Hydreigon: 270-320 (83 - 98.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 248 SpA Hydreigon Belch vs. 252 HP / 124+ SpD Primarina: 364-430 (100 - 118.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Pixilate Sylveon Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Roseli Berry Hydreigon: 272-324 (83.6 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 248 SpA Hydreigon Belch vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Sylveon: 404-476 (102.5 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Btw, it's running 8 SpD in order to tank 1 Hyper Voice from Cleric Sylveon w Roseli Berry.

This set is meant to Trap and beat Chansey, and clean later in the game. You can achieve this by using Fire Spin and trapping the Chansey, (just hope that you hit) then you use Taunt to deny healing, and use Superpower twice to kill it. Metronome allows you to not get chipped by Life Orb, and you presumably killed the Fairy types, so you can steamroll the passive teams late game. The Speed is for outspeeding +Speed Krookodile and everything below that.

EVs: 200 Atk / 56 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Roar
- Roost
- Draco Meteor
- Dual Wingbeat
I know, this looks weird, but let me simplify. This set is mostly here to punish threats by making them switch out with Roar, and with the ability to heal up after. Dual Wingbeat punishes stuff like Mienshao/Keldeo and Draco Meteor helps to beat other stuff like Latias. 252 Speed with a Naive nature outspeeds some threats of yours. This set can definitely be altered to fit with a Physical set replacing Meteor with Outrage so you can beat up Lati and other things.

Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Flamethrower
- U-turn
- Roost

This is a set I've been using a lot lately and has to be my favorite set for hydreigon at the moment. This set combines longevity, breaking power, and momentum, which are usually factors that other drei variants need to pick between for its other sets. Considering that drei tends to force switches, it finds plenty of opportunities to roost, while being able to maintain momentum and wear down some of its checks over time with U-turn. Realistically the two coverage moves can vary depending on the team, but Pulse/Flame tends to cover most in this tier. In comparison to nasty plot variants, the opportunity to plot is not always present especially against faster teams, and you can potentially be a huge momentum sink against AV Mienshao and specially based fairies on well-timed doubles, so being able to mid-ground with U-turn can go a long ways in a match. When looking at choiced variants, this set can still function as a knock absorber if needed against mons like Krookodile, Crawdaunt, and Tangrowth as well, which is something choiced sets do not offer since those tend to value keeping their item.

Latias (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt
- Mystical Fire
- Roost

Latias can threaten much of the tier with the standard set, even would be switch ins like mandibuzz, primarina, and celesteela do not like taking tbolt and steels like jirachi and aegislash. It is just a nice breaker on teams who can abuse stuff such as chansey and umbreon

Latias (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Psychic
- Healing Wish
- Defog/Trick

Choice Scarf Latias with a Timid nature is an effective method of Speed control to reliably check faster offensive threats, +1 Speed Pokémon, and other Choice Scarf users. Choice Scarf Latias has one of the highest unboosted Speed tiers in the tier, at 525. This allows Latias to outspeed and revenge kill Scarf Hydreigon, Soul Dew Latias, Keldeo, Scarf Krookodile, Lycanroc-D, Scarf Mienshao, Nihilego, Zygarde, Scarf Zarude, +2 Calm Moltres-Galar, Scarf Thundurus-Therian, +1 Gyarados, Noivern and even Modest Regieleki.

Latias is intended to take the role of late-game support: revenge killing fast threats and setup sweepers. Draco Meteor is Latias’ main 130BP STAB move that will likely pick off weakened threats or OHKO fast, frail attackers. Psychic is Latias’ more accurate STAB move to secure a late-game victory when Draco Meteor’s miss may matter, or when Latias wants to stay in for consecutive turns and not worry about the Special Attack drop. Latias’ secondary STAB can also check Fairy-types and threats like Keldeo, Kommo-O, Amoonguss, Mienshao, Nihilego, Roserade and Nidoking. Healing Wish is very useful support on offensive-oriented teams as it can fully restore a crippled attacker. Defog is useful to clear entry hazards, but if there is already another Defogger, Trick is used to lure and cripple common switch-ins like Chansey and Celesteela. Roost may be a third option to heal Latias.

:thundurus-therian: 252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus-Therian: 226-267 (75.5 - 89.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
:gyarados: 252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados: 187-222 (56.4 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
:zarude: 252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zarude: 198-234 (56.2 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
:moltres-galar: 252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Moltres-Galar: 156-184 (48.5 - 57.3%) -- 93.4% chance to 2HKO
:krookodile: 252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Krookodile: 252-297 (76.1 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It's lowkey my responsibility to post some dumb shit that really shouldn't work but it does. This does some dumb stuff but notably beats many of the checks to Latias right now.

i do not take responsibility for any losses you may incur while testing this. Nightingales Bad Ideas Inc. has no claim to this information and allows it to be spread at the will of any interested individuals.

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

Idea is that you set up an Agility on a switch, eat a hit from Aegi/Zarude/Shao or whatever and proc WP while boosting with CM along the way. Then you roll over them with a hopped up Stored Power while smashing any Steels not named Aegi and Darks with Aura Sphere. Works best with screens and something that can sufficiently chip Aegi.

This set is highkey a nuke, as it can just hit through like the 90% of the tier while also retaining a good Speed tier. The gameplan is simple, you get rid of the fairies by clicking Psyshock, then when the fairy is gone you just click Draco Meteor (and if there's an Steel you can predict and click Mystical Fire), yeah it's a fun mon. You can also put Thunder over Trick in order to break Slowking but I appreciate Trick in order to avoid prediction vs Steels/Chansey.

SpD tank Latias

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 140 SpD / 120 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

- Psyshock
- Mystical Fire

It is not Blissey....it is a fat Latias flying on top of us!
Here we have a different approach when using Latias.
I think that a SpD bulky set is viable as a SpD tank because Latias has the combination of reliable recovery (Roost+Leftovers), a good stat distribution and utility moves that can be used both offensively and defensively (Calm Mind + Mystical Fire).

Just one calc to show the bulk on the SpD side:
  • 252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 140+ SpD Latias: 177-211 (48.7 - 58.1%) -- 58.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery...................................before Calm Mind that allows Roost to tank Nidoking forever.

This EVs spread allows Latias to reach 286 Spe points (Resource - SS UU Speedlist [20/07/2021 update, see post #49] | Smogon Forums), enough to outspeed 252 Spe+ Chandelure/Gardevoir/Mamoswine/Togekiss/Venusaur by two points.
