This week's Next Best Thing is...

Week 42: Mandibuzz

:ss/Mandibuzz:

Sporting acess to a wide variety of Utility moves, Mandibuzz has been a decent defensive pivot since it dropped to UU almost a month ago. However, this bird has grown tired of its standard defogging set rather quickly, and has enlisted your help in coming up with a new exciting set!

Banned Sets

:Heavy-Duty Boots:

You have until Wednesday, October 27th at 11:59 pm EDT (GMT -4) to submit your set!

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Taunt
- Roost
- Knock Off
- Toxic

Taunt Mandibuzz is useful for shutting down special walls like Chansey, Slowking, and Umbreon and beating them 1v1, as well as some special attackers like Hydreigon. Special bulk is given to allow Mandibuzz to tank hits as well as possible. Roost is there for recovery. Knock Off aids in the 1v1 and is generally useful. Toxic is what allows Mandibuzz to beat most passive mons 1v1.

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Whirlwind
- Foul Play
- U-turn
- Roost

Whirlwind allows Mandibuzz to pressure some setup sweepers it would usually be unable to threaten, such as Hydreigon, Kommo-o, and Galarian Moltres, and it synergises well with hazards to force damage onto the opposing team.

Snarl Mandibuzz

Mandibuzz @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 4 Def / 160 SpD / 96 Spe
Careful Nature
- Snarl
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Roost

General idea
This is a variation of a classic bulky set with Roost for recovery, U-turn to keep the momentum, and the combination of Knock Off + Snarl to support the teammates.
None of these two STABbed moves really needs Atk or SpA investment because they have to cripple the opponent's threat somehow.
Snarl, in particular, allows to stall with Roost some weaker special attackers in order to gain more turns for some free Knock Off.

No Defog, despite it is a good move, because Mandibuss is weak to SR without this item in a metagame in which Knock Off exists and is everywhere.

EVs (spread) and item
96 Spe EVs allows Mandibuzz to reach 220 Spe points, enough to outspeed 252 Spe EVs Modest Primarina (and other threat up to this Water-Fairy) by one point in order to use Knock Off or Snarl and U-turn out.
248 EVs are put onto the HP in order to have odd health to switch into SR one more time if Mandibuzz loses H-D Boots.
The remaining 160 EVs are put into the SpD because, alongside a Careful nature, it allows this bird to stall some weaker special attacks with the help of Roost.

H-D Boots allows to switch-in&out without being worried by SR

Tips for the use
This Mandibuzz is not self-sufficient by any means, but it is good to ease the switch-ins of teammates that can revenge kill a weakened/crippled threat. Also, it can force some switches, so hazards setter are always welcome.

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 200 HP / 92 Def / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Tailwind
- U-turn
- Roost
- Foul Play

This Mandibuzz is meant to support the team with tailwind while still being a decent physical wall. The speed evs are more relevant for tailwind boosts, but without tailwind you are able to outspeed all Celesteela, Adamant Mamoswines, and some Kommo-o which gives you a safe U-Turn against these threats that otherwise nuke Mandibuzz or use it as a set up opportunity. After a tailwind, you outspeed Regieleki and scarfers including the rotoms, hydreigon, togekiss, and gardevoir. The idea here is you tailwind as they switch to one of these and you get a safe U-turn the following turn. This set can be used to both support your own sweep and as an emergency answer to an opposing sweep with Tailwind. The defensive EV spread lives a LO Lycanroc stone edge while maximizing your HP stat to help take special hits.

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 Spe
Impish Nature
- Swagger
- Foul Play
- Roost
- U-turn

More of a meme than anything but this thing has like five moves LMAO

This set shouldn't need any explanation, really. Swagger the switch-in, click Foul Play, and cross your fingers. If you've got some good luck, then you'll successfully pull this off and have a good laugh along the way :mehowth:

:ss/mandibuzz:
Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 144 HP / 252 SpA / 112 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Roost
- Air Slash
- Dark Pulse

You might be saying right now "Isnt this just a shitty Moltres-g" but it has two incredibly big advantages in its arsenal, a better recovery in roost and Weak Armor. Moltres-G normally has to decide whether to use Agility to boost its speed or Rest to have some longevity, Mandibuzz can have both and on top of that, it has the surprise factor. For example if you have your Mandibuzz against a Zarude they have no reason to NOT U-Turn into their fairy or offensive check like Thundurus, But then you plot as they do that and now you are an incredibly scary sweeper. The same goes for a foolish Tangrowth thinking Mandibuzz can only U-Turn against it. Truly a demon. Speed EVS outspeed Scarf Rotoms after a Weak Armor boost and it also naturally outspeeds standard sets for specs aegi and primarina. Modest max special atacck to boost your power as much as possible and the rest in HP to keep some longevity.

CALCS
+2 252+ SpA Mandibuzz Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus-Therian: 201-237 (67.2 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Mandibuzz Air Slash vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Primarina: 138-163 (45.6 - 53.9%) -- 45.3% chance to 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Mandibuzz Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory: 222-262 (66.4 - 78.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 144 HP / 0 SpD Mandibuzz: 336-396 (84.6 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Mandibuzz (F) @ Choice Band
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Knock Off
- Foul Play / U-turn
- Roost / U-turn

80 speed tier is not bad at all, allowing you to outspeed stuff like Diggersby, Bulu and Necrozma, while also outpassing +1 Excadrill after Weak Armor. Despite coming from 65 base atk, choice banded brave bird is no joke and can lure a couple of answers trying to take advantage of Mandibuzz' passivity (NP Drei, all Primarina sets, Azu are 2hkoed, hatter is a 50% chance). It can take by surprise some slow breakers (only needs minimal chip for diggers, ohkos bulu) and some defensive mons (ohkos Slowking, ohkos av tang and amoong after rocks).
It still has some defensive utility through roost or U-turn, and Weak Armor + Foul Play can come in clutch in certain situations. Can also work as a knock absorber against the likes of Krook and Tang

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Def / 216 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Foul Play

huh? rest talk mandi? well it helps to better check stuff such as toxic excadrill, amoonguss, tangrowth, and slowking, as they can inflict it with status and cripple it for the rest of the game, toxic can go such a long way but with rest talk you are forcing progress no matter what against defensive teams who rely on toxic to wear you down. The Ev's allow to live 2 specs draco from hydreigon as it can help to knock it and rest up to prevent it from wrecking your defensive core

Hey UU friends, I'd like to announce something.
---
So I'm going to co-host this project with Aqua Ring (sorry for the ping fren), it was really a surprise to me as I just woke up and got a discord message asking me to co-host this project, but won't really give more details hehe.
Anyways, so this cycle winner is Celebiii with their Taunt Mandibuzz submission! Congrats! Your submission will be added to the hall of fame shortly!

This week's next best thing is :Swampert: Swampert :Swampert:
:SS/Swampert:
Despite it's initial hate, muddy buddy has established as a defensive staple in many Volt-Turn teams and balances thanks to it's access to Stealth Rock and Flip Turn plus it's Ground/Water typing which allows it to take on threats such as Rotom-Heat, Thundurus-Therian and Nihilego while also taking on the best mole aka Excadrill. However, Swampert wants to take advantage of it's relatively good movepool and not stick to it's boring defensive set.

Banned Sets:
:leftovers:

You will have until Thursday 11:59pm (GMT-5) to submit your sets, cya!

Choice Band Swampert

Swampert @ Choice Band
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Flip Turn
- Liquidation
- Ice Punch

General idea
Swampert is generally used as a bulky annoying tank, but this set underlines the great coverage moves it has, alongside its good natural bulk.
Flip Turn is the momentum-keeping move that makes all this set possible.
Earthquake + Liquidation is the dual-STAB combination, whereas Ice Punch rounds well the coverage.

Some calcs proving the relevance of CB:
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Azumarill: 262-309 (76.8 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Primarina: 280-330 (92.7 - 109.2%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Slowking: 261-307 (66.2 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (you counter Recover+Regenerator with one hit)
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 228-268 (64.9 - 76.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and burn damage
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 438-516 (108.4 - 127.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Earthquake/Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 220+ Def Amoonguss: 204-240 (47.2 - 55.5%) -- 75.4% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thundurus-Therian: 247-292 (82.6 - 97.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 195-229 (55.5 - 65.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and burn damage
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Celesteela: 180-213 (45.2 - 53.5%) -- 91.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 186-219 (46 - 54.2%) -- 48.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Krookodile: 296-350 (89.4 - 105.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thundurus-Therian: 294-346 (98.3 - 115.7%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Swampert Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hydreigon: 238-282 (73.2 - 86.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

  • In this set, Torrent is stronger than Damp because we have the Water STAB (Flip Turn is for utility). That extra power may be handy to ensure 2HKO/OHKO.
Be wary of burns and Intimidates.
