WHAT IS UP, SMOGON!! One day, I woke up with the desire to play UU, so I made a UU team and decided to find 3 Pokemon to make a UU FWG Core.
In the end, I just decided to make a stall team instead since I havent seen many stall teams and I wanted to see why stall is so useless in 5th gen. I was shown the truth with this team which showed that stall wasnt weak, just that no one really knew how to stall.
Team Building Process
For my FWG Core, I decided to use Rotom-H, Tangela with Eviolite and Slowbro. These three were chosen with at least hour of scrolling up and down Serebii searching for a good core. All three have amazing defenses and can cover each other easily so I had few problems settling with these three.
I felt the need of a strong and reliable fighting type as fighting types have helped me so much as I always used Conkeldurr in OU unless I used a weather team so I thought about my Fighting type....three Pokemon came to mind: Machamp, Heracross and Breloom. Unfortunatly, two of them were in OU so Heracross was clearly the only choice for a good fighting type.
Seeing the metagame, I felt that somthing must that sets up SR should be included in my team. Chansey immediately came to mind and as Blissey's younger sister, she was definetly going to be a big help to any stall team with higher defenses with Eviolite.
Zapdos was chosen among many others for a special sweeper as if you were to look at the other members, you would realise that they are stallers(except Rotom-H) and I needed a another one. Zapdos came to mind as I did not want to be cheap and use Mew or Victini who belonged in OU instead of UU. Zapdos was a beast but has its counters and a SR weakness that can be controlled easily.
Eventually, as the UU metagame evolved, Heracross seemed to get more useless to the team every day. So, I decided to change it. But without an idea for a new Pokemon, I was stuck. It was not until my friend suggested a pre-evolution as a joke that I decided about Gurdurr, Conkeldurr's pre-evolved form. Turns out a seems-to-be lame idea from a friend with was a joke at first turned out to be the best help the team got.
(D)
As the metagame evolved again, Chansey started to fail me and I needed new way to set up SR. I kept looking and I found that Deoxys-D was in UU, so I used the DNA Wall to my advantage and made it my replacement for Chansey.
In-Depth Look
Rotom-H/Leftovers
252 HP 252 SpDef 4 Def
Bold Nature
Levitate
Overheat
Discharge
Will-o-wisp
Pain Split
Reason for choosing: Rotom-H. One of the three Pokemon that make my FWG Core. Rotom-H possesses a good amount of defense and offense, something rare as high defense Pokemon rarely have high offense but Rotom has both including a wonderful typing of Fire/Electric that 5th gen gave it.
Moveset/Nature/EVs: Rotoms use two sets: Choice Scarf and Bulky Rotom. I used the bulky variant as this is a stall team and bulky Rotom lives much longer than Scarf Rotom. Pain Split provides me with a form of recovery as Rotom possess no other form of recovery except Rest. Will-o-wisp helps to cripple and Discharge and Overheat make for reliable STAB. Its EVs help maximize its bulkyness and since Will-o-wisp halves the attack of the opponent, SpDef is the heavily invested stat of the two defenses.
Tangela/Eviolite
252 HP 252 SpDef 4 Def
Calm Nature
Regenaration
Giga Drain
Leech Seed
Sleep Powder
Ancientpower
Reason for choosing: Tangela is AMAZING!!! Base 115 Def on an unevolved Pokemon?? To make sense of its stats, it was a fully evolved Pokemon until Tangrowth was made. Thanks to his massive defense stats, the Eviolite makes him almost unbeatable.
Moveset/Nature/EVs: Tangela's moveset is pretty simple. Sleep Powder, use Leech Seed then go for Ancientpower to hope for a stat boost. Giga Drain and Leech Seed are used to make up for the lack of Leftovers.
Slowbro/Leftovers
252 HP 252 Def 4 SpAtk
Bold Nature
Regeneration
Surf
Slack Off
Psyshock
Yawn
Reason for choosing: Slowbro is definetly one of the best physical walls in the game, maybe even the best in UU! Everything about Slowbro is great...good defense, decent offense, a healing move, its obvious that Slowbro is the best wall in UU!
Moveset/Nature/EVs: Slowbro is a wall so a recovery move is a must. Slack Off fills this position easily. Yawn forces switches and gives me a free turn to Slack Off or predict his switch-in and send in an appropriate counter. Since the last two Pokemon serve as mixed walls, Slowbro stats helps maximize the team's physical defense.
Gurdurr/Eviolite
252 HP 252 SpDef 4 Def
Careful Nature
Guts
Bulk Up
Drain Punch
Mach Punch
Payback
Reason for choosing: I mostly use Conkeldurr in OU so despite Gurdurr being a joke suggestion from a friend. So I tried Gurdurr with Eviolite in UU. It works very well and takes hit better than Conkeldurr. This just goes to show that sometimes, if a joke is taken seriously, you can get millions of ideas from nowhere.
Movesets/Nature/EVs: Not much thought is put into his movesets, natures and EVs. As a user of his big brother Conkeldurr, I just took Conkeldurr's moveset and put it into Gurdurr. He lacks recovery so the point is to set up and sweep.
Zapdos/Choice Specs
252 SpAtk 252 Spd 4 HP
Timid Nature
Pressure
Thunderbolt
HP Fighting
Heat Wave
Volt Switch
Reason for choosing: Zapdos is a wonderful special attacker. However, his movepool is limited if I were to use Lightningrod so I used Pressure instead where I use many different moves.
Moveset/Nature/EVs: Simple Zapdos moveset. HP Fighting to cover its weaknesses, TBolt for STAB, Volt Switch for scouting and Heat Wave for good coverage. Zapdos' EVs are designed to make it faster as Specs makes it have immense special attack so more speed is necessary.
Deoxys-D/Leftovers
252 HP 252 Def 4 SpDef
Calm Nature
Pressure
Magic Coat
Spikes
Recover
Toxic
Reason for choosing: As the metagame evolves, the team evolves. I dont run SR on Deoxys-D as many leads pack SR and I can just Magic Coat to steal their SR. And Deoxys-D looks so much cooler than Chansey with better defenses but a (much) lower HP stat.
Moveset/Nature/EVs: The set is designed to annoy but fails against Taunters. Good thing whatever the taunter is, the rest of the team can take it. Deoxys-D is here to set up, status some Pokemon and annoy the hell out of them.
So tell me how I can improve on the team and maybe leave a compliment if you cant find a way to improve. Credits for the pictures to go to Arkeis.com and Google for the Rotom-H and Gurdurr.
