You know, I always felt as if vanilla gets a bad rap. People associate it with "basic," "boring," and "flavorless," when in reality it is anything but. Vanilla is one of the most complex flavors out there (Did you know that natural vanilla is as rare and complex as saffron?), and I think it's time to give credit where credit is due.
This is not to say that there's anything wrong with the basics, though. Despite the fun that we have had with our variants, it's been almost a full year since our last completely stock game of Diplomacy. In the same way that you can't appreciate the sun without a little rain, I feel like you can't appreciate these extra variants without a little classic Diplomacy for contrast.
In my opinion, it's high time that we go back to our roots with this no-variant Diplomacy. And just like vanilla, I think we can still see incredibly complex gameplay despite the lack of map variants. That's why I am excited to announce that signups for Vanilla Diplomacy are now open!

Game Rules:
You can find the official diplomacy ruleset here. New players are welcome to sign up, even if you know nothing about diplomacy.
Important Notes:
- Please follow all Smogon and Circus Maximus forum rules, both here and in the Discord.
- Powers will be assigned to players at random after the sign-up period.
- Private communication is key to success in Diplomacy. Therefore, joining the game Discord is mandatory for players: https://discord.gg/2knT5FN9. There will still be a game thread where players will also be free to post.
- Orders should be given to me privately on Smogon or Discord before each specified deadline. If you fail to do this, it will be treated as an NMR (No Moves Received) and all of your units will hold in place. Deadlines will not be extended to accommodate late order submissions, but the game may be paused for a certain period if at least 2/3 (5) of Powers vote for it. So expect no exceptions.
- Spring and Fall order phases will last for 48 hours each after the previous results have been posted in the game thread. Retreat and build phases will last for 24 hours each.
- If I know of IRL commitments that prevent me from adjudicating at the deadline, expect the phase deadline to be extended rather than shortened. However, if the players want the former instead, I am open to that.
- I will be using Backstabbr to process orders and adjudicate the game, with screenshots of the board being posted in the game thread each turn.
- If you miss multiple phases of orders in a row, I will sub you out or find you a partner to help you finish the game.
- You are NOT allowed to screenshot OR copy-paste chat logs for use in the game.
- If I catch someone doing this, they will be subbed out. I might also ask Circus mods to infract depending on the severity. Consider this your warning.
- Draws can be proposed at any time during a Spring or Fall turn. Once the draw is proposed, I will ask each (living) player privately if they would like to end the game; if the vote is unanimous, the game will end. Draws will include all survivors.
- Due to the fact that hydras end up just being one player actually playing and the other doing nothing, NO HYDRAS will be allowed for this game. No exceptions. I don't care if your grandma just rose from the dead to play this game with you; I am not allowing it.
- I am open to running two boards at once if we get enough signups. If we need more than that, I would have to onboard another host; but I wouldn't be opposed if we did.
