Vaporeon [QC 0/3]

QC: X / X / X
GP: X / X

[OVERVIEW]

* Vaporeon is one of the most effective pivots on Baton Pass teams due to its exceptional natural bulk and defensive typing.
* It provides constant regeneration to teams with Aqua Ring, which can heal back a Substitute in 2 turns if paired with Ingrain or Leftovers.
* It has access to both Roar and Acid Armor, both of which greatly help to handle opposing Pokemon that set up.
* Vaporeon should not be used on teams other than those utilizing Baton Pass.
* Due to the existence of other options for pivots and defense passers, Vaporeon is not necessary for Baton Pass teams.

[SET]
name: Baton Pass Pivot
move 1: Baton Pass
move 2: Acid Armor
move 3: Aqua Ring
move 4: Roar
item: Normalium Z
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Bold
evs: 216 HP / 252 Def / 40 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Baton Pass should be used to switch to a team member better suited to the threat the team is currently facing or when ready to pass the boosts accumulated to a sweeper.
* Acid Armor boosts defense by 2, which is important for handling the myriad of physical threats in Anything Goes, such as Swords Dance Arceus and Mega Rayquaza.
* Aqua Ring provides the team with constant regeneration equivalent to Leftovers. When paired with Ingrain or Leftovers, Substitutes can be healed back in two turns, which is important when Evasion boosts are in play.
* Roar is useful for handling an opponent's boosts or otherwise need to force a switch.

Set Details
========

* 40 Speed EVs allow Vaporeon to outspeed Deoxys-Attack at +3 Speed.
* The remaining EVs are invested into Defense and HP along with a Bold nature because Vaporeon's base Defense is unimpressive and needs to be improved in order for it to act as a proper pivot.
* Water Absorb helps Vaporeon against Choice Scarf or Specs Kyogre, which forces a switch if Vaporeon switches into a Water type attack.
* Normalium Z is important to give Vaporeon Z-Baton Pass, which clears all stat drops that may come from various sources, but especially Smeargle's Moody. It also allows Vaporeon to switch despite being taunted.

Usage Tips
========

* Vaporeon should be switched into when the team lacks speed boosts to soak up damage, allowing a frailer team member to switch in unscathed.
* Z-Baton Pass can only be used through Taunt on the turn Taunt is used. If against a Taunt Yveltal or Mega Gengar, use it to ensure the safety of the boosts accumulated.
* Roar may be a better choice than switching to a team member to block an opposing Roar, Dragon Tail, or Whirlwind if the team lacks the defense boosts to make the switch safe and has the speed boosts to outspeed whatever opposing Pokemon is using the move.
* Aqua Ring should be prioritized along with Ingrain if the opponent has a method of removing boosts such as Haze or Heart Swap. Alongside not being removable, Aqua Ring provides important regeneration that allows the team to stay in the game for longer to get more boosts.
* Acid Armor or another method of boosting defense should be prioritized against teams with multiple priority moves, such as Extreme Speed from Mega Rayquaza or Arceus, or Shadow Sneak from Marshadow.

Team Options
======== if any of this is copied directly from espeon or mr mime, fix that. i responded to checks and counters before doing the rest of this analysis, so read that and then come back and go through this. i also think this section is unnecessarily long, an in-depth profile on every BP member starts to get really boring. oh and say something about how it should only go on BP teams once again

* Scolipede is a powerful team member with access to Speed Boost, Baton Pass, and Iron Defense, allowing the team to farm defense and speed.
* Smeargle is arguably the most popular Baton Passer due to having access to every move in the game, along with Moody as an ability. Smeargle can put opponents to sleep with Spore, use Ingrain to keep opponents from using forced switches, Spectral Thief to steal back stats or hurt a Marshadow, or Substitute to farm Moody boosts. Smeargle's Ingrain, when paired with Vaporeon's Aqua Ring, heal back Substitutes in 2 turns, greatly increasing the survivability of the team. In addition, Vaporeon can pivot into Smeargle, allowing the latter to switch in without being hit, keeping its Focus Sash intact.
* Drifblim is the most viable Evasion passer because of access to Minimize and Unburden, along with its natural bulk. Evasion helps with setting down Substitutes when the Substitutes cannot survive any given move the opponent is attacking with. Vaporeon's Aqua Ring allows the team to get more Substitutes down. When paired with Drifblim's Evasion, the team can get more Substitutes down to safely boost behind.
* Mr. Mime is invaluable against common methods of removing boosts. Soundproof allows it to switch into Perish Song and Roar, and its Fairy typing lets it switch into Dragon Tail. Taunt allows Mr. Mime to block opposing Taunts, Haze, and Heart Swap. Vaporeon's ability to pivot also partially remedies Mr. Mime's frailty.
* Gliscor can farm Evasion boosts with Double Team against Primal Kyogre, one of the most powerful threats to Baton Pass teams, because of its immunity to Thunder. It is especially effective when paired with Vaporeon due to Water Absorb forcing Primal Kyogre to use Thunder.
* Espeon is the most effective sweeper on Baton Pass teams due to access to STAB Stored Power along with Magic Bounce to handle Taunt and Whirlwind. It can also Baton Pass out of tricky situations back to a more bulky team member. Vaporeon can pivot into Espeon, allowing the latter to have a fuller HP pool when it starts to sweep, which helps against priority attacks.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Vaporeon can use Wish over Roar, which allows the team to heal even more. However, Roar is often more useful for dealing with opposing set ups.

Checks and Counters
=================== same thing as the espeon analysis, but this is extra bad because you cant just copy paste the same exact shit across analyses. like idk, cant call it plagiarism, but copying ur own content is not how we roll. like i cant overstate how not ok this would be for any analysis going out, if it wasnt your work that you copied then you would also get a 3 point plagiarism infraction. as is, copying is really dumb. we want all analyses to be unique, and you didnt even swap out the places where it says espeon zzz

anyway I would condense most of this into a BP specific checks category, keep separate the stuff that targets vaporeon specifically (perish song and yveltal probably)

**Mega Gengar**: Mega Gengar with Substitute and Taunt is extremely difficult for Baton Pass teams without Illumise to defeat due to its immunity to Spore behind a Substitute and powerful attacks that can OHKO most team members. It also traps Espeon with Shadow Tag and outspeeds it, which results in Espeon being knocked out and its user losing if the Espeon has no Speed or Special Defense boosts.

**Yveltal**: Yveltal is extremely effective in forcing out Espeon due to Taunt, which it can OHKO with Dark Pulse if the switch is predicted. Its dominance over Baton Pass teams can be slightly remedied by giving a Mental Herb to a team member with Substitute, providing Espeon a safety net. Yveltal also can use Sucker Punch against Espeon, which can easily land an OHKO if Espeon doesn't have the proper Defense boosts.

**Primal Kyogre**: Primal Kyogre's Thunder never misses in rain, preventing team members from easily setting down Substitutes with Evasion boosts. Its Water attacks OHKO almost all Baton Pass team members. Sending it in later in the game after the team collects Special Defense boosts is not as effective, however.

**Mega Rayquaza**: Mega Rayquaza can OHKO almost every Baton Pass user with Dragon Ascent or V-Create, oftentimes winning the game singlehandedly if Evasion does not cause it to miss attacks.

**Arceus (any type)**: Arceus' unpredictability in its many diverse sets can prove difficult for Baton Pass teams to deal with, especially with Roar or Perish Song. However, once these moves are scouted, its effectiveness drops significantly as a team member such as Mr. Mime can be switched into.

**Marshadow**: A Focus Sash on a Marshadow is deadly against Espeon, as it can steal all of its boosts with Spectral Thief. Even without Focus Sash, it can attack Espeon with a priority Shadow Sneak, which OHKOs with a Life Orb if Espeon lacks defense boosts. If a Marshadow's item has not been scouted and it is sent in against Espeon, it is usually safest to Baton Pass out to a Normal type such as Smeargle.

**Ditto**: Without regeneration from Ingrain and Aqua Ring or a Substitute to block Imposter, Ditto can switch into Espeon and copy all of its boosts to sweep.

**Haze**: Haze is perhaps the most effective counter to Baton Pass teams due to the Baton Pass player's incapability to switch into it, as opposed to Roar, Whirlwind, Dragon Tail, Spectral Thief, or Taunt, and the impossibility of recovering the boosts back without slowly farming them back, as opposed to Heart Swap or Spectral Thief. Some users of Haze include Zygarde and Toxapex. When playing against one of these Pokemon, it is important to try to predict their switches into it and switch to a Pokemon with Taunt such as Mr. Mime or Espeon if you have the necessary boosts to KO or at least deal significant damage. Getting effects that are not effected by Haze, particularly regeneration from Ingrain and Aqua Ring, as well as Substitute, should typically be done early in the match.

i would mention how it isnt absolutely required on BP teams, kinda more replaceable than other stuff due to other defense boosters being present and ingrain > aqua ring. don't have to go super in-depth about it, but mentioning its biggest downside is important, just competition from other BP mons
