[OVERVIEW]

Mega Venusaur has an incredible defensive ability in Thick Fat, which makes it only weak to Flying- and Psychic-type attacks. Its movepool and stats make it a tank that is very difficult to take down, and a fine check to the many Fairy-types that roam around. However, it's rather slow and easily pressured by offensive teams, and it has rather poor coverage for an offensive Pokemon.

Below are some sample sets. These sets are likely to be standard, but they will be expanded upon and updated as the metagame progresses.

[SET]
name: Bulky Offense
move 1: Sludge Bomb
move 2: Synthesis
move 3: Giga Drain / Energy Ball / Sleep Powder
move 4: Hidden Power Fire / Sleep Powder
item: Venusaurite
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Sludge Bomb is the main way to smash through Fairy-types such as Tapu Koko and Azumarill.

* Synthesis gives Mega Venusuar reliable recovery.

* Giga Drain gives Mega Venusaur even more recovery, while Energy Ball works if investing in Speed to defeat Suicune before it can Calm Mind up.

* Hidden Power Fire lets Mega Venusuar roast Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor, and ensures that Celesteela will not win when used in conjunction with Synthesis.

* Sleep Powder is acceptable Mega Venusaur can give up coverage. Consider using Tapu Lele or Tapu Bulu to get rid of Electric or Misty Terrain if using this.

* If Heatran is a problem, Earthquake 2HKOs it. It also OHKOs Nihilego even with a Modest nature.

* The given spread allows Mega Venusaur to be a fairly bulky attacker. However, it can run 60 Speed EVs to outspeed Suicune and some Tapu Fini as well.

* Flying and Psyhic-type resists are a must when using Mega Venusaur, as Mega Salamence and Tapu Lele are serious problems for it.

[SET]
name: Defensive
move 1: Sludge Bomb
move 2: Synthesis
move 3: Leech Seed
move 4: Giga Drain / Sleep Powder
item: Venusaurite
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Sludge Bomb still OHKO Tapu Koko even without investment, while Giga Drain deals good damage against Water-types.

* Synthesis gives Mega Venusaur reliable recovery. This works great with Leech Seed, which whittles down foes and lets you conserve Synthesis's low PP.

* Sleep Powder can be a dangerous move as long as the coverage loss is worth it for Mega Venusuar's team. Make sure to use either Tapu Lele or Tapu Bulu to get rid of Electric or Misty Terrain.

* A Bold nature with maximum HP and Defense investment allows Mega Venusuar to avoid a 2HKO from Tapu Koko's non Life Orb boosted Brave Bird. It also avoids a 2HKO from Garchomp that lack offensive items.

* A Calm Nature avoids a 2HKO from Choice Specs Hydreigon Dark Pulse, and lets Mega Venusuar defeat bulky Mega Gengar even if they carry Hex.

* Flying and Psychic-type resists are very important, since Mega Venusaur can't OHKO Tapu Lele switch-ins, and can be set up on by Mega Salamence.

Obviously no QC, but a few things to say!
* Sleep Powder is acceptable Mega Venusaur can give up coverage, and if Heatran is a problem, Earthquake can be used with a Quiet nature to hit that and Mega Gengar hard.
^ I'd be making a comment on how Misty Terrain / Electric Terrain can make Sleep Powder useless.
* The given spread allows Mega Venusaur to be a fairly bulky attacker. However, it can run 60 Speed EVs to outspeed Suicune and some Tapu Fini as well.
^ I'd argue that having 60 Speed EVs should be staple. It lets Mega-Venusaur win in 1v1 situations. The EVs can also be taken out of HP without all too much repercussion. Definitely a worthy benchmark to have.
* A Calm Nature avoids a 2HKO from Choice Specs Hydreigon Dark Pulse, and lets Mega Venusuar defeat bulky Mega Gengar even if they carry Hex.
^ About Hydreigon, is this really worth it? All that you could really do here is Leech Seed + Synthesis stall. Eventually you would flinch or run out of Synthesis PP, whichever comes first. Also worth noting that this is from Timid Choice Specs Hydreigon; Modest has a 50% chance to 2HKO with Dark Pulse. I just think that a better example could be used here.
