VGC 2014 Format Trick Room Team

Hey everyone,

I've already went through probably over 100 different trick room teams, some very similar, some very different. I'll be starting this thread with my current team. Note that you can only send 4 pokemon to battle in VGC. And if you're one of those people who thinks Trick Room isn't "worthy" of being called a real team or if it's a "gimmick", check out this page where I'll be uploading links to my Pokemon Showdown matches that I use this team in. I'm sure it'll change your mind.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...-VdGX5twq8/pub

Trick Room Team #1

B055_BUG (Volbeat) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Tail Glow
- Baton Pass
- Substitute
- Bug Buzz
Usually in first slot. I use Prankster for priority in Tail Glow and Baton Pass, and a Focus sash to live so I can do it. Volbeat is not going to be out for a lot, he boosts Special Attack by 3 stages with one Tail Glow, then Baton Pass it out into Ampharos. I'll also use substitute along with Tail Glow and baton pass it over if I feel it can survive that long. If he gets sent out after he baton passes to Ampharos, it's usually because he's my last or second last pokemon, or if I'm feeling confident and try and get another tail glow - baton pass off for my Reuniclus. He's actually surprisingly bulky compared to what you'd think. Just earlier today he survived an Earthquake and Discharge from a Garchomp and Rotom on Pokemon Showdown. Bet that guy was surprised :D

B055_BU88L3 (Reuniclus) @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Trick Room
- Focus Blast
Usually in second slot. Normally I wouldn't recommend only one Trick Room user, but double battles rarely last very long and Reuniclus is very bulky. (424HP, 75 Base Def, 85 Base Sp.Def) Send him out, get Trick Room up, then switch into amoonguss the same turn Volbeat is Baton Passing into Ampharos. He gets sent out if Ampharos dies, as he can too deal out really good damage. I give him Regenerator over Magic Guard so he can heal up any damage on him when he switches into Amoonguss.

B055_SHR00M (Amoonguss) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SDef
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Protect
- Spore
- Synthesis
- Rage Powder

Gets switched into second turn, along with Ampharos. Spores enemies to sleep if time allows, uses Rage Powder along with insane bulk to protect Mega Ampharos and allow it to keep sweeping, Protects if Ampharos is using a Discharge that will go first and definitely kill, and uses synthesis to regain health. Oftentimes I run into ground pokemon who aren't affected by Discharge (looking at you, Garchomp) so I'll let Amoonguss use Rage Powder so prevent Ampharos from being attacked by the other pokemon, and Ampharos kills the ground type. Ah, the look on their faces when their Mega Garchomp gets OHKO'd by a Dragon Pulse.

B055_HA1R (Ampharos) @ Ampharosite
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Discharge
- Signal Beam
- Power Gem
- Dragon Pulse

Gets baton passed into second turn along with Amoonguss. Amoonguss's rage powder allows it to safely wreak havoc, and it's great bulk lets it survive a few hits. This guy is the main sweeper of the team, sporting a large 90 Base HP and an insane 165 Base Sp.Att when he mega evolves. He's also got a great movepool, allowing it to attack many pokemon easily. Sometimes Static paralyzes the turn he's switched in, another great plus. And with the +3 attack Tail Glow provides, he's nearly unstoppable. Don't for get his otherwise-pathetic-but-now-amazing speed of 55, reduced to 45 when mega evolved! He is weak to earthquake, but the most common user of it (Garchomp) gets OHKO’d every time by a Dragon Pulse. Amoonguss’ Rage Powder lets Ampharos safely destroy anything outside of Trick Room and when he’s not using Discharge. And when he is using discharge, Amoonguss can either use Synthesis or protect to take the damage from Discharge (which is 47% of amoonguss’ health). 80 damage from discharge, plus STAB, plus 471 Sp.Att, to all enemies, and let’s not forget he’s almost guaranteed to move first in it’s priority bracket. All-in-all, this guy is made for Trick Room teams.

B055_GH05T (Gengar) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Trick Room
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt
- Dazzling Gleam
Typing isn't as good, neither is the movepool. It's only move that attacks everyone is Dazzling Gleam, which doesn't get a STAB Boost nor have any other affects. It's also very, very fast for a Trick Room Team. The only real plus is that it can fight outside of trick room, can use trick room itself, and isn’t weak to earthquake. Seem like a lot of cons, right? Well sure, but this guy does have many reasons to be on this team. Firstly, it simply terrifies people in the pokemon selection. Instead of their attention diverted to the real threat, Ampharos, they're too busy bringing all their dark and ghost type users to counter him, and often forgetting about their ground type users because of his Levitate. They bring their fastest pokemon, which I can counter by using trick room. And if they see him sent in instead of reuniclus, they often unnecessarily use Protect when no attack is coming, or switch out to counter it, know knowing that it's leaving the field next turn. But I know what you're thinking - why am I putting speed IVs and EVs on him and why is he Timid??? I feel that even with a -Speed nature with 0 Speed IVs and EVs, he's still just too fast for a Trick Room Team. So what's he doing here? Well, you could bring him instead of reuniclus, and do what you normally would, setup trick room then switch into Amoonguss. Again, he causes many unnecessary switches or Protects. But later on, if Ampharos happens to die, send this guy out and dump the trick room. Why dump the trick room? Because this team only loses to two things. Hax and other Trick Room Teams. Suddenly your opponents trick room team is feeling so confident against this insanely fast pokemon, until Gengar uses trick room while trick room is still up, to cancel it out, and wreak havoc. This would very rarely happen, but it works.

Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Quiet Nature
- Blizzard
- Focus Blast
- Giga Drain
- Ice Beam
Better than Alakazam, not as good as Ampharos. You already can't use his good ability (Snow Warning) because it'd be hurting your team a lot, Blizzard is super effective on two of your pokemon, and it doesn't have any other moves that attack everyone. He's faster (er... slower?) than Ampharos, his Sp.Att is still trying to reach 400, while Ampharos's is near 500, and he has 7 weaknesses, one of them a 4x weakness to Fire, compared to Mega-Ampharos' weakness to only Ground, which can potentially be fixed by Magnet Rise. BUT despite all these cons, he's great to use instead of Ampharos if facing a sand team, which he destroys.

Notes:
-Considering removing Bug Buzz for Protect on Volbeat, his mediocre attack stats can't really use it.
-Considering throwing Magnet Rise onto Ampharos instead of Signal Beam. I find that he never uses Signal Beam and really only gets hit hard by Ground type moves.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

STILL skeptical about this team? I’ll be updating this list with more victories often:
