VGC Hopeful - VGC 2010 RMT (Ubers)

VGC 2010 Hopeful
(CCM plans to win at least one round)

This is a bit different from the team posted originally. This team plays a bit off of Kyogre's rain effect, but doesn't totally rely on it in case it goes wiry and is no longer in play (ie, someone randomly decides to pull out Groudon from the backburner).

I'm not the best at team building, so sorry if this isn't the most epic team possible. I'm still trying to work out the kinks. I've been playing around with the team and trying to get the most function out of it, so here it is:

AT A GLANCE:
-Kyogre
-Kingdra
-Mewtwo
-Weavile

A revamp of the original team, with Kingdra and Mewtwo replacing Palkia and Registeel while Kyogre and Weavile remain on the squad.

Kingdra @ Life Orb
Adamant
Swift Swim
Evs: 4 HP / 252 Speed / 252 Atk
-Waterfall
-Iron Head
-Outrage
-Protect

Changed up this Kingdra to an Attack variant to change it up a bit. I'm guessing many won't expect an Attack variant over the usual SpecAtk variant, so this may play as a bit of a surprise. Waterfall gives Kingdra a clean STAB and do some quick damage in case the opponent wants to Auto-Sun with Groudon. Iron Head is another strong attack with a helpful flinch chance. Outrage is to take out the likes of the Dragon Ubers. While he'll be locked into it, it can still do tons of damage to anyone who doesn't resist it. Finally, Protect when Kyogre breaks out Surf or when my opponent feels like Kingdra is a nuisance.

Kyogre w/ Leftovers
Quiet
Drizzle
Evs: 4 SpecDef / 252 HP / 252 SpecAtk
-Water Spout
-Ice Beam
-Thunder
-Surf

Alongside Empoleon is Kyogre, who puts Drizzle into effect and immediately starts going to work. Emp's lack of an ice attack means Kyogre will be using Ice Beam, as well as taking advantage of 100% accuracy with Thunder. For large, field-wide attacks, Surf and Water Spout will do the rest. Kyogre can take hits and give them back, as well as switching to:

Mewtwo w/ Leftovers
Timid
Pressure
Evs: 4 HP / 252 Speed / 252 SpecAtk
-Protect
-Focus Blast
-Thunder
-Shadow Ball

With Drizzle in play, Mewtwo can swap out with Kyogre or Empoleon and get to work immediately. A huge speed stat will give Mew2 a big boost and an immediate effect on the field. 100% accuracy with Thunder is a big help. Protect is in there since Mewtwo will probably become a big target for the other team and I can't lose Mewtwo too early. Focus Blast can deal damage to the likes of Dialga if such a case occurs, while Shadow Ball can lay into opposing Mewtwo and many others thanks to STAB and a large SpecAtk stat.

Weavile w/ Focus Sash
Jolly
Pressure
Evs: 4 HP / 252 Speed / 252 Atk
-Pursuit
-Ice Shard
-Low Kick
-Night Slash

Finally, Weavile. Essentially a revenge killer if needed. Pursuit is pretty obvious. Ice Shard and Night Slash give Weavile some STAB attacks (as well as the possibly of more crits with NS). Brick Break also takes advantage of Weavile's speed and attack stats.

Update: 1/5/10

Changed this up a bit after looking it over. Still looking for rates and critique, so please give this one a shot:

-Entire team revamped. Palkia replaced by Kingdra. Registeel replaced by Mewtwo.
-Weavile's Brick Break replaced by Low Kick.

Rate

Hi. Sorry I don't have time for a detailed rate, but ill try to get back to you quickly.

Overall, it seems OK, but many other people will be running teams that have a physical sweeper or 2 in there 2 leads, so CM might not always be useful. Also, people will be running some really nice double battle teams, which will probably be able to counter this team. But since, you're just hopin gto get past the first round, it seems ok.

Palkia: Yeah its fine i guess. Correct me if im wrong, but doesn't fire moves lose power in rain? Maybe. Palkia's only way of abusing rain is with Surf. I'd recommend Kingdra in this position. Sure, its not an Uber, but you are only running 2 ubers atm. For example, Kingdra could have Draco Meteor and Outrage. Two powerful STAB attacks. Waterfall is another option and Dragon Dance for powering up. Just a suggestion.

Kyogre: Yeah seems fine. Gets boosted from rain. Nice. Not necessarily the best set for VGC, but seems ok. Im new to VGC teams, so others might be able to help you more with this. I'd change this EV set to make it slightly more bulky to take more hits. Look into it.

Metagross: I don't recommend you running Choice Band, especially in an Ubers match and in Doubles too. If someone uses a Palkia or Kyogre for example and you're locked into Mash or Bullet Punch, you're screwed totally. I'd remove it for either Leftovers/ Life Orb. I'd change the set while you're at it too. You can keep Explosion if you want. Mash too. I'd take some speed ev's off and invest it into HP. Metagross isn't going to be outspeeding much anyway.

Gengar: First things first! Why Protect?!!! It is a ghost type and explosion will not affect it, protect or no protect. Sucker Punch is possibly the WORST move possible on a gengar. It has like 100 Attack, no STAB on it, and priority is useless. Shadow Ball will be doing more damage every time. Ditch Sucker Punch. In replace, Hypnosis has wavering accuracy, use it at your own risk. A Hidden Power perhaps? Ice for dragons like Lati@s, Mence etc.

Overall its ok. I'd recommend changing Metagross maybe, but probably Palkia. Maybe not for Kingdra if you want the whole Ubers thing, but it does shine in the rain. Sorry for this shortish rate, illtry to get back to you with some more help soon.

Gengar w/ Life Orb

-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power Ice

These are the changes that I would make to make this team work better. First of all, you were running Fire Blast on Palkia. Why? You have Kyogres Rain Support. Why whould you then use Fire Blast? Rain halfs Fire Blast power and therefore I would suggest either Aqua Tail(STAB'ed + Lustrous Orb + Rain Support is deadly) or Outrage(STAB'ed + Lustrous Orb + 120 Base Power). These are far better options then Fire Blast. Also a little nitpick, change the 4 EV's into HP to Atk. You don't really need the extra Hitpoint and you never know when that extra Attrack point will count. Second of all, you were using Sucker Punch on a Gengar? Ok, Gengar has no attack at all. Why would you run Sucker Punch on a Special based attacker? On top of that, you equided a Life Orb on Gengar. If you would have used Sucker Punch, then it would be a) worthless since Gengar has no attack and b) it would give Gengar sone nasty and unneeded recoil damage from the Life Orb. So Thunderbolt is the better choice here. You are also running Protect on Gengar. That is ok if you're planning to Surf with Kyorge and have Gengar on the field. But if you're using Gengar in combination with Metagross, then I would recommend using Hidden Power Ice on Gengar. Since you're using this team for the VGC and (some) Ubers are allowed, you should be prepared and run Hidden Power Ice, since a majorty of the Ubers are weak to Ice-moves.

Yeah, I sort of completely forgot the fire weakness in rain. My bad, lol.

Here's a revamp if that works better:

Palkia w/ Lustrous Orb
Hasty
EVs: 252 SPATK / 252 SPD / 4 ATK
-Surf
-Spacial Rend
-Aqua Tail
-Thunder

Kyogre w/ Leftovers
Modest
EVs: 252 SPATK / 252 SPD / 4 HP
-Calm Mind
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Thunder

Metagross w/Leftovers
Adamant
EVs: 144 HP / 252 ATK / 112 Spe
-Meteor Mash
-Earthquake
-Bullet Punch
-Explosion

Gengar w/ Life Orb
Timid
EVs: 252 SPATK / 252 SPD / 4 HP
-Shadow Ball
-Thunderbolt
-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power Ice

That work out better? And, if I'm running HP Ice on Gengar...how do I get it to have HP Ice?

Alright I see a few things.
1.None of them have Protect and that is a biggie in VGC play.
Things like Gengar can stand to have 3 attacks and protect so that is a must. VGC is all about guess work and working strategies together for your whole team. I see that Palkia and Kyogre work together but how does Gengar and Metagross play off the rain? How does it benefit them? and how are you going to keep the rain in play? These are some of a few questions I don't think this team answers. Its a good first try so playtest it, see what it needs and tweak it to your liking.

Well, my first suggestion is that you run a Quiet Nature and little or no Speed on Kyogre so you can make sure Tyranitar and Groudon don't get their weather effect first. This also allows you to pile some HP into Kyogre, giving it some bulk to stick around, with Palkia doing the actual damage. Also, this same bulk will probably let you survive a Draco Meteors from Latios or Rayquaza, since your first two Pokemon are relatively slow.

I'm not sure what else to suggest being that the VGC rules are very limiting, and it looks like you have picked some decent choices.

Team has been updated. I need some more comments and critique so I can finalize this team in time. Thanks!

Team has been updated. Registeel has been swapped out for Mewtwo and Palkia for Empoleon. Playing tons more off of Kyogre's Drizzle ability.

Hopefully this is a better team than the others.

Hmm, well what I do notice is that Empoleon is overwhelmingly slow, even slower than some Groudon (though their Base 90 Speed isnt that bad). I might recommend you use Kingdra over Empoleon as he receives Swift Swim, has only one weakness resisted by Registeel, and has quite a bit of power in Rain, especially with enough speed to outrun everything there is in the Uber tier (that is allowed) and KO every Dragon type in it with Outrage. Here is a set:

Kingdra @ Life Orb - Mild Nature
EVs: 80 Atk / 252 SpA / 176 Spe
Ability: Swift Swim
- Surf
- Draco Meteor
- Outrage
- Waterfall

This Kingdra set reaches 552 Speed in Rain, while Draco Meteor kills every Dragon in the tier except Latias, Giratina, and Dialga. Surf and Draco Meteor are special, while Outrage and Waterfall are physical. Outrage KO's Latias as well as anything else that has good special defense. Kingdra has enough bulk to take most neutral attacks even like Groudon's Earthquakes, provided they aren't boosted. Watch out for Rayquaza though, whose Air Lock messes up rain and can outspeed and kill Kingdra.

Also, Stealth Rock is unnecessary in VGC where there are only 4 Pokemon total and on average about 6 switches per game at least.

Your team looks good at this point, with a good average speed especially if you are running max speed Mewtwo (extremely fast and powerful).

Weavile should have Low Kick over Brick Break, as many of the things hit hard by Weavile's Brick Break are hit harder for their weight. (i.e. Blissey, Snorlax, Heatran)

Necessary changes made. Kingdra swapped out for Empoleon. Low Kick replaced Brick Break on Weavile. Thanks Dark, I really appreciate it.

Well, I recommend Aura Sphere over Focus Blast on Mewtwo, Ice Beam over Shadow Ball, and either Taunt or Recover over Protect. Also, a Life Orb over Leftovers. My reasons are as follows:

Aura Sphere provides better accuracy (since Mewtwo's set's lack of bulk makes it very bad to miss), Ice Beam hits the various Dragon types harder and in general makes good coverage as a sort of Bolt-Beam combo with Thunder. Protect isn't necessary unless you plan on (a) using Explosion on your first members, or (3) preventing an Explosion from your opponents. Taunt prevents your opponent from doing anything but attacking, which can be useful especially if Mewtwo gets in to stop Trick Roomers, etc. Recover lets you occasionally find time to, well, recover your health from Life Orb damage. Calm Mind can also be used, but you lack the bulk to use it. If you would like to run a different Mewtwo set, I highly recommend this one:

Mewtwo @ Leftovers - Timid
6 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Ability: Pressure
- Aura Sphere / Thunder
- Ice Beam
- Taunt
- Calm Mind

If you are going to use this, I recommend swapping your Rain sweepers to the back two slots and Mewtwo and Weavile to the front.

Weavile should also have Life Orb. Focus Sash will only be useful if Weavile leads.

What have you done to Kingdra? Iron Head is horrible coverage alongside a Water move, get rid of it. Waterfall provides a good flinch rate anyhow. You need to have Draco Meteor + Outrage if you hope to hit certain things on the right spectrum. Why is Protect there? Either use a Lum Berry to prevent status as well as your own Outrage's confusion or Focus Sash to prevent Exploders. Hydro Pump in Rain should OHKO Metagross, the most common Explosion user you will see anyhow, so use that if you wish to put a stop to any Explosion users (all common ones are easily KO'd by your Rain sweepers).

That's about it from me. Good luck in the VGC!
