VGC VGC16 RMT Kyogre-Xerneas set up

I wanted to use Kyogre, and thought what goes well with it, of course Rayquaza, but then I noticed it is able to learn Psych Up. I took this opportunity and put Xerneas, the set up king, on my team. This seemed threatening and it was as everybody knows what Xerneas does, but Kyogre increasing it already big special stats and speed is a huge deal. Kyogre has a rather wide and good special movepool, making it even more a threat. I peaked with this team on showdown at ~1350. However I am thinking about adding Weavile on my team instead of probably Amoonguss as rage powder lost its efficiency as there are so many attacks hitting both pokemon, whilst the potential fake out allows the set up. Another problem with this team I believe are the EV spreads, but I don't know them too well. Thanks very much in advance! :)

Xerneas @ Power Herb
Ability: Fairy Aura
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dazzling Gleam
- Moonblast
- Geomancy
- Protect

Xerneas is a great choice this format, I personally don't like it too much, but I can't deny it is one of the best Pokemon out there, also I need it for the strategy to work. Typical Geomancy Set up with Dazzling gleam for spread, Moonblast to hit hard and avoid wide guard, both get fiary aura boosted and protect. Nature and EVs I wanted to make as tanky as possible whilst hitting hard, I thought I don't need the speed as I am at +2 anyway, but tell me if I am wrong.

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psych Up
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Protect

Can you spot the weird potential threat? Well it is clearly Psych Up. Think about it, Geomancy boosted Kyogre is a beast. Especially in the rain and with its wide special movepool and huge special attack it is insane. The spread is similar to Xerneas, with Max Hp and Sp. A, also the spread ensures I move AFTER Xerneas so it can set up Geomancy and Kyogre can Psych Up the same turn. Origin Pulse to Hit Hard and Ice Beam for Dragons and Sun situations, and Protect.

Zapdos @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Static
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tailwind
- Thunder Wave
- Heat Wave
- Thunderbolt

Now that Zapdos with static is available, it became a constant addition to my team, crippling the opposition if they ain't careful. Rocky Helmet I find very useful as somehow Kangaskhan really loves to Power-Up punch or Fake Out it. Evs to live long and hit hard, but I think they can be better, I am just not familiar with good Zapdos spreads sadly. The moves are chosen to get constant speed control, as Tailwind lasts not too long, I can Thunderwave to keep me ahead, also those fast Thunderwaves are almost as good as Prankster. Thunderbolt for Stab and Heatwave almost exclusively for Ferrothorn.

Mawile-Mega @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Iron Head
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Protect

I have two Mega Evolutions on the team, Mawile being one of them as it has good synergy with Kyogre with the Rain and to counter Xerneas. EVs to be bulky and hit very hard, also trick Room is very common so I made it min. speed so I am very versatile. Movepool is average, Iron Head and Play Rough for strong Stab and Sucker Punch for Priority, and protect. Also my two megas have Intimidate, which is very helpful.

Salamence-Mega @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 4 Def / 244 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hyper Voice
- Draco Meteor
- Tailwind
- Protect

Salamence is my other Mega for different situations, mostly for Groudon, Rayquaza and when speed control is needed. The Nature and EVs are, rather average, max speed and almost max Sp. A to hit hard and to outspeed, most importantly Mega-Rayquaza. Tailwind for speed control, Stab Draco Meteor for Rayquaza and other Salamence, I like it more than Double Edge as it catches people off guard and allows an easy knock out on opposing Salamence, which mostly run Double Edge, and Rayquaza. Hyper Voice for Spread Stab and staple protect.

Amoonguss (M) @ Mental Herb
Ability: Effect Spore
Level: 50
EVs: 220 HP / 44 Def / 244 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Grass Knot
- Clear Smog

Amoonguss is a Pokemon which has good synergy with Kyogre due to the rain, Mental Herb so that I can rage powder and spore without fear, the EV spread has some purpose but I don't remember what it was, I know it is orientated on max bulk. Sassy Nature to counter Trick Room. Also I like Effect Spore over Regenerator as the current Meta is very fast and Kangaskhan is still very common. Clear Smog for Xerneas and potentially for Smeargle and Grass Knot for some damage output. The Rage Powder is very important as it allows Xerneas to set up easier.

hi.

this team is already solid as is, in fact only one pokemon needs to be changed so kudos to you on that. i feel the strategy with psych up kyogre is gimmicky at best, so apologies if you really enjoyed it, since that's something i'll be changing throughout this rate.

max speed and a timid nature on xerneas is preferred for pretty obvious reasons; outspeeding primals and other base 90 pokemon and even faster pokemon like other yveltal and pre-mega rayquaza is very useful for safe set up. you can run 44 def if you feel the need to take mega rayquaza's dragon ascent, however.

as said in the intro, psych up primal kyogre is a bit of a gimmick. water spout would be better over it, nuking kangaskhan and salamence as well as other pokemon. a spread change to 252 hp / 124 def / 76 spa / 4 spd / 52 spe is fine also. this ohkos the aforementioned kangaskhan with water spout as well as living attacks such as mega rayquaza's dragon ascent.

xerneas+primal kyogre requires a couple ways to beat ferrothorn. as such, a talonflame over zapdos is better here. not only does this break ferrothorn, it also beats mawile and amoonguss as well as provide priority with gale wings brave bird. this also serves as a lead, something your team is lacking at the moment. a standard set of brave bird / flare blitz / tailwind / taunt is fine here.

you can run max speed ivs, adamant, and 108 speed on mawile. it outspeeds base 100s and lower under tailwind, as well as underspeeding primals by one point. a simple max hp / max attack still works, but having min speed isn't necessary on a team with no trick room.

you can afford to run double edge on salamence to swiftly get rid of amoonguss, since it troubles your xerneas + primal kyogre core. with tailwind on talonflame, you don't need tailwind on this, which allows you to free up a slot. changing the nature to naive, running max attack ivs, and putting the 4 spd evs in attack solves this.

finally, running protect > clear smog on amoonguss is fine, and changing the spread to 244 hp / 60 def / 204 spdef sassy. it lives a double edge from jolly kangaskhan with the rest in spdef to better take on xerneas and primal kyogre. also, changing effect spore to regenerator allows you to reliably spore without another status effect getting in the way. it also gives you some hp when you switch out.

good luck and have fun with the team.

yes a bulky xerneas exists. a spread of 108 HP / 140 Def / 68 SpA / 4 SpD / 188 Spe modest makes precipice blades from jolly groudon a 3hko and really helps against groudon+thundurus leads. 188 spe outspeeds 252 spe neutral natured base 90s and smeargle. not to mention, 68 spa hits a jump point which makes it only slightly less powerful than another common spread with 188 spa.
