XY OU viability rankings 4tw

Hello fellow Smogoners,

I’m a long time lurker (actually registered some time ago and made a few useless posts) and with the Aegislash ban, I finally decided to go for a RMT attempt. I’m not a native English tongue so bare with me – my school days are long gone and so is my practice in English.

First of all: I’m not really happy with the way Aegislash was banned. I’m totally on the pro-ban side as it was really unhealthy and over-centralizing for the metagame. I liked the 50/50 though, as it was prediction as usual. But what screwed it over for me was that it was holding back some other broken Pokemon that can now go on a rampage. I hope we are seeing some more suspect tests in the future.

So I had to give up on all of my old teams since most of them contained an Aegislash as the main glue holding it together. So I was back to team building – something I horribly suck at. So I was trying something new: Just pick some top viability Pokemons and hope they work together!

I was starting with some of the most broken Pokemon since they were released – the genies. Landorus has magnificent offensive presence as it threatens to 2HKO everything but the biggest special walls. Thundurus is the “oh shit” answer to every boosting sweeper.

Next I wanted to add the Mega-Pokemon. Even though some new Megas are viable with Aegislash gone, I wanted to stick with one of the 3 old ddancers: Tyranitar, Gyarados or Charizard. Gyarados won the spot because I didn’t want sand and liked to have an intimidate user.

I generally like to be a little more bulky and I didn’t like HO up to this point (which dramatically changed during building this team) so I was looking for some more bulky offense. Scrolling through the viability list I found a cool assault vest user in Azumarill.

Two things were missing on my team: Defog / Spin and Stealth Rocks. For the first part I always liked the same thing on offensive and defensive teams that always works as good glue, because it’s really versatile: Latias!

So last but not least I wanted rocks on my team since they are the best move there is. Looking at my team I felt I was more offensive than I’ve planned to go. But this team building developed in this direction so I decided to try a focus sash lead for the first time. The highest ranked offensive stealth rock user was Garchomp, so Garchomp it is!

After doing the first battles I realized that AV Azumarill was holding me back. I experienced so many situations where a sitrus berry + bellydrum set would have swept that I changed Azumarills set. The next thing on my list was Garchomp, cause I already had a huge Ice-weakness. With Aegislash gone, one of my most beloved Pokmons from Gen V could return to its old glory: Terrakion

Last, but not least, Mega-Gyarados wasn’t performing as good as I hoped so I took a look at the other ddancers I had in sight while building this team – Tyranitar and Charizard. While trying them both I once set up on Clefable (something that really teared my team apart so many times) without Mega-evolving with Charizard that I decided to use the old Gen I “dragon”.

Now introducing to you - the Viability Stars:

terrakion.gif

Terrakion @ Focus Sash
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Close Combat

Most of the time, Terrakion is my lead pokemon. This set is pretty obvious: taunt the enemy lead if necessary, get down rocks, deal as much damage as possible. But – please don’t waste this Slot! Terrakion is still useful later in the game and if team preview reveals that Terrakion can’t get its job done (or just poorly done) don’t waste it! Sadly, it loses to Mamoswine leads, a common match up. But there are several other occasions, where I don’t bring it in right away. Just to name some of them: I can’t stop the enemy team from getting rocks up so I know I need to defog early (cause I’m pretty weak to rocks myself) – Terrakion would be just wasted. Sometimes I see some very Terrakion weak teams once one check is eliminated – even a sash + rock set can do a sweep. Some stall teams also have trouble in dealing with Tauntrakion. Breloom leads usually shit on Terrakion, also a non favorable match-up. The list goes on and on – basically, if I’m not sure lead Terrakion will have a huge impact, it comes around later on.

landorus.gif

Landorus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 Atk (Def) / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature ( Timid Nature )
- Knock Off (Sludge Wave)
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Earth Power

As you might have noticed in the team building process, this team doesn’t really run any fancy or creative sets. It is standard Landorus, sometimes going Knock Off, sometimes switching to Sludge Wave (nearly every time I lose to Clefable I’m switching it). You know what he excels at: wall breaking, lategame cleaning and sweeping. I don’t think any further explanations are needed here.

thundurus.gif

Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Superpower
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Thunderbolt

The Savior! Every time I screw things up like a retard – Thundurus comes in and uses Thunder Wave. I know he’s a good Pokemon overall – but he could easily be replaced by something else if it wasn’t for prankster twave. BoltBeam coverage is always nice to have and the superpower kills of things that aren’t prepared for it (hi @ heatran). Like Landorus this thing doesn’t need that much explanation – just use it as long as you still can in OU (the genies are my top suspect candidates).

azumarill.gif

Azumarill @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Play Rough
- Belly Drum

Belly Drum Azumarill – the best set up sweeper there is. He can always come in on something that isn’t threatening at all and get to +6 while being decently healthy so he doesn’t get revenged. My team gives it especially many set up opportunities – the most prominent is Latias tricking her scarf on a pursuit user. Et voila, Latias leaves the stage for a +6 Aqua Jet sweep. Funny thing is that you don’t need this thing to set up to do its job – ive won so many matches without setting up but using its natural bulk + sitrus berry heal instead. You have to decide early in the match weather you try to sweep with this thing or if you need it as a check for a specific threat – it can fulfill different roles (im looking at you Greninja!).

latias.gif

Latias (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Defog
- Trick
- Psyshock
- Draco Meteor

The Golden Glue. Latias does so many things for this team – it can revenge-kill stuff, cripple stuff with a scarf, take a hit if necessary, die for a setup sweeper to get going, get rid of annoying rocks. It just fits on this team perfectly. I was thinking about running Healing Wish on her set, but sadly found no spot to place it. LO + Healing Wish was tested, but was inferior to the set above. It just provided everything my team needed. And it’s always happy to get pursuited as long as Azumarill is alive.

charizard-mega-x.gif

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 144 HP / 252 Atk / 112 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Roost
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Punch

Let me introduce you to the next suspect test. Just to make a long story short – if this thing gets +2, shit is about to go down! I’m running the more bulky set without the recoil / lock attacks because its bulk and typing gives it phenomenal set up opportunities. Despite being a shitty non-Mega-Pokemon, I found quite many situations where it’s smarter to not evolve in order to gain boosts. Clefable (you realize how hard I hate this thing do you?) does nothing to you before evolving and you can beat Unaware sets anyways, choice-locked Earthquake become the best thing in the world!

Well that’s my first RMT – please be gentle with me. Right now I’m at 1740 rating in the OU ladder and pretty sure, you can help me improve this team further (hell I suck at EVs).

Best Regards

Hey this team looks pretty good Senju! However, a few things I would like to point out. First, I'm not clear on what the EV's of Charizard are meant to do. If you want a bulkier set, then I would recommend 248 HP/152 Atk/108 Spe
248 HP gets you as bulky as possible while giving you a SR number, letting you switch in to Rocks one more time. Also, even though I know you don't like recoil moves, I would recommend Flare Blitz over Fire Punch, as the power would help and Roost can heal off excess recoil. Also, a Scarf Defog set isn't the most efficient, especially when you have several mons that need rocks off of the field, so I really would encourage you to change Latias to Latios with Thunderbolt, as Azumarill can really deal some damage to your team. A Life Orb Thunderbolt does a little over 80% to a non-AV Azu, so it'll OHKO with a small amount of prior damage.

Latios @ Life Orb
252 SpA/252 Spe/4 Def
Timid Nature
-Draco Meteor
-Psyshock
-Thunderbolt
-Defog

As you said, Fairies, specifically Clefable, can sweep you if Charizard is weakened. So I recommend that you keep Sludge Wave over Knock Off to deal with annoying Fairies. And I'm curious as how you deal with Quagsire, as while Landorus is there, it is weak to Scald and it isn't switching in. It can be a hard stop to a Charizard or Azu sweep, so testing Outrage over Dragon Claw might be worth testing, but having your two STABS moves with undesirable secondary effects might not be a great idea, but it's worth trying. Anyway, that's all I have for now, good luck with your team! I'll try to test it once I get back on my computer.

Btw, this is my first real rate, so take all advice with a grain of salt, as your own experience is infinitely superior to anything I say on paper.
