Equipped with an Air Balloon to make it immune to Ground-type attacks, this set is tailor-made to defeat nearly every Ground-type in the tier, such as both Landorus formes, both Ursaluna formes, and Donphan. It also has the ability to beat most Fairy-types, such as Primarina, Sylveon, and Iron Valiant, with Sludge Wave. Substitute is utilized to secure a win against Assault Vest and Choice Band Ursaluna, as most might attempt to attack Volcanion with Giga Impact or Avalanche, and both of these situations grant Volcanion a free turn to use Steam Eruption. The EVs allow Volcanion to survive a Thunderbolt from Choice Specs Iron Valiant while KOing it back with Sludge Wave, while also allowing it to survive a Choice Band Landorus-T Stone Edge. Finally, its Speed EVs are enough to outspeed Adamant Donphan and Ursaluna, with the rest going into Special Attack. Volcanion appreciates Dragon-, Fairy-, and Steel-type companions such as Haxorus, Alolan Ninetales, and Scizor, thanks to their ability to check opposing Dragon-type Pokemon, which would otherwise give Volcanion trouble.
