* Quiver Dance allows Volcarona to defeat Primarina and Ogerpon-W by using its Passho Berry. It also should be used against Iron Valiant, Iron Crown, and Alolan Ninetales.
* Bug Buzz allows Volcarona to defeat Cresselia, Darkrai, and non-Choice Scarf + Rock Tomb Hoopa-U.
* Overheat gives Volcarona a winning matchup against Iron Crown, Corviknight, and non-Choice Scarf + Rock Slide Metagross.
* Giga Drain, in conjunction with its Passho Berry, allows Volcarona to beat Primarina reliably by using Quiver Dance on the first turn.
* The HP EVs, alongside its Passho Berry, allow Volcarona to live Ivy Cudgel from Adamant Ogerpon-W. The Special Defense EVs allow Volcarona to survive Psychic Noise twice from Choice Specs Liquid Voice Primarina. The Speed EVs allow Volcarona to outspeed non-Choice Scarf Hoopa-U. The remaining EVs are invested in Special Attack to bolster Volcarona's damage output.
* Volcarona cannot use Overheat to reliably OHKO specially defensive Weakness Policy Iron Crown. In this matchup, it is important to use Quiver Dance on the first turn, Bug Buzz on the second turn, and Overheat on the third turn to avoid giving Iron Crown the potential of OHKOing Volcarona with its Psyshock.
* Since Passho Berry Volcarona tries to beat certain Water-types, it loses out on the immediate firepower that a set like Life Orb Volcarona would have. This is notably seen against Booster Energy Raging Bolt, for example. Volcarona also struggles against Ground-types, like Ursaluna, Garchomp, and both Landorus formes. It also notably loses to Hisuian Goodra, which is a blind spot in Volcarona's Steel-type coverage. For these reasons, it is a good idea to pair Passho Berry Volcarona with a Pokemon like Ursaluna, as it often handles Raging Bolt, Garchomp, Landorus, and most Hisuian Goodra sets.
