Volt Turning in the Rain

Hi everyone, this is my first RMT, and it is in b/w 2. The main idea of this team was centered around 3 rain abusers using the volt turn combo, and espescially the new torn-T which seems a lot more viable mixed now. The offensive core is centered around Scizor, Jolteon, and Torn-T which all benefit from the rain up, with a defensive support core centered around politoed, vaporeon, and Donphan. I've had reasonable success with this team, but i always struggle to go past the 1100 ranges on PO for reasons I will soon specify. So without further ado, here is my team, and I hope some suggestions can be made!

1.Rain Summoner/Physical Wall
Politoed@leftovers
115px-186Politoed.png

Trait: Drizzle
Evs: 252hp,252def,4Sdef
Bold Nature (+Def,-Att)
-Scald
-Ice Beam
-Toxic
-Protect

Pretty standard toed set. Acts as my physical wall in conjunction to donphan, and spreads status. I used to use perish song to prevent sweeps, but protect is usually more helpful for me to scout and stall, and because even an uninvested ice beam will check some of the most common dragon sweepers. This is where I need some input as well. I often find myself losing weather wars using this set. While it is great, even ninetails can check it when the sun is up. I've considered using an offensive set, but the lack of power and the loss of a huge team supporter really discourages me.

2. Special Wall/Wish support
Vaporeon@leftovers
vaporeon.jpg

Trait:Hydration
Evs: 252 hp,4def,252 SDef
Calm Nature (+Sdef,-Att)
-Scald
-Wish
-Protect
-Heal Bell

My go too special wall. It's been really reliable and its one of my favorite pokes, as well as the awesome ability it gets which allows me to absorb status. Heal bell is really helpful here, as a burn on scizor basically would shut it down. Although I see many of these running a physically based wall set, I find that the ability to tank dracos and such is awesome, as well as the fact that i have 2 physical walls anyway. My only concern is the similar movepool to Politoed, and I don't know many ways to improve it. I've considered roar, but I don't really have too much of a problem with set up sweepers and such if a play carefully. Any ev changes/move change suggestions would be great here.

3. Rocker/Spinner/Physical Wall
Donphan@leftovers
232.png

Trait: Sturdy
Evs: 252 HP, 252 def, 4 sp.def
Impish nature (+def, -spA)
-Earthquake
-Ice Shard
-Stealth Rocks
-Rapid Spin

An awesome support pokemon, I find that it is better than forretress in many ways (which i used to use before this). For one it doesnt have another 4x fire weakness, and 2, it isnt set up bait, 2hkoing mences and 3hkoing offensive dragonites with ice shard that are hoping to set up. I've considered using an offensive spinner set to give the ice shards some much needed power, but the ability to tank physical hits seemed to have presidence for me. Any ev and move suggestions would be awesome!

4.Technician Turner
Scizor@Choice band
scizor.png

Trait: Technician
Evs: 248 hp,252 att,8sDef
Adamant nature (+att, -spA)
-Bullet Punch
-U-Turn
-Superpower
-Pursuit

Pretty much the standard smogon set, not much to say here. Its fire weakness is migitated so it was my first choice as a u-turner, and trapper of course.

5.Volt Turner
Jolteon@choice specs
jolteon.jpg

Trait: Volt Absorb
Evs: 4def,252spA,252spd
Timid Nature (+spd,-Att)
-Volt Switch
-Thunder
-Hidden Power (Ice)
-Shadow Ball

An awesome rain abuser, I just had to have this speedy guy on the team. It provides a much needed electric immunity should donphan die and hits hard. However, a problem i see is that i rarely use shadow ball at all, which was honestly slapped on for coverage. If anyone can reccommend a better move that would be great, if there is one.

6.Mixed sweeper
Tornadus-T@Life Orb
tornadus.png

Trait: Regenerator
Evs: 4 att, 252 sp att, 252 spd
Naive Nature (+spd, -sDef)
-U-Turn
-Superpower
-Hurricane
-Grass Knot

This thing hits like a truck, and is often my late game sweeper once the scarfers have been eliminated. I use a mixed one here because it provides awesome coverage and a better U-Turn. Grass knot is in there for coverage, and I honestly dont use it much at all. The lack of a good fourth move has never hurt me, and I cant seem to find a better replacement as Hurricane destroys everything anyway.

So there is is, my Rain Volt Turn team.
Some concerns I have that maybe could be helped with are:
-My team goes from extremely offensive to extremely defensive, slowing me down. While its not a bad thing, I sometimes end up winning on stall rather than damage. I've considered Rotom-W over Vaporeon or Jolteon, but lack of wish and heal bell support is noticable, and another water poke is unappealing to me if its replacing jolteon.
-Lack of a phazer. I usually am careful not to let the opponent set up and keep the pressure on, but on the rare occasions that subCM jirachi gets through, I get screwed. If anyone can suggest who should be the phazer that would be awesome, as ive been debating on whether politoed for perish song, or vaporeon/donphan for roar.
-Other weather. I usually dont have a problem with sandstorm, but sun teams can be a pain in the ass. If they can get a free switch in with venusaur after chlorophyll its pretty much game over if politoed is dead.

I hope you liked my team, and please go easy because I'm a newcomer here. Any sort of feedback would be appreciated!

Hi there MrBallsy, Welcome to Smogon and nice team!

Your team overall has great synergy with no glaring type weaknesses which is a great start. However your team seems very dependent on having rain up, but you have no real way to deal with other weather starters. To remedy this I have a few suggestions along with a few moveset nitpicks.

First off, Hydration Vaporeon is awesome in the rain for one reason in my opinion, instant recovery with rest. I suggest changing Rest>Wish/Protect. With rain up you can easily regain all of your health, not just half, in one turn instead of two. I also recommend running Rain Dance>Protect With an open slot since you're now running rest, Vaporeon can really mess with the opposing weather starters by replacing their weather with yours. Even just using scald you can 2HKO most variants of weather starters even without stealth rocks.
Here's some calcs:
Scald: 206-242 (50.99 - 59.9%) -- 89.06% chance to 2HKO (Specially Defensive T-Tar in Rain)
Scald: 232-272 (66.28 - 77.71%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Specially Defensive Ninetales in Rain)
Scald: 278-326 (66.19 - 77.61%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Specially Defensive Hippowdon in Rain)

I would also recommend running Roar>Heal Bell because if you adjust your playstyle to using Vaporeon as a status absorber you can also double its functionality as a Phazer to get those nasty DD Dragons or Sub CM Jirachi's out of there.

Vaporeon Set:
Vaporeon (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Hydration
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Scald
- Rain Dance
- Rest
- Roar / Heal Bell

Hopefully I could help with your teams problems, I tried my best to keep your team as close as it could be to the original!

Hi there,

There are a bunch of threats to this team but I kinda want to point out 2 of them.

Rotom-W and SubCM Jirachi with Water Pulse can both really do work against your team. Specially Defensive Celebi is a fantastic adition to almost every Rain team and probably the best counter in the game for both of the aforementioned threats. It is also bulky enough to sort of tank Ice Beams from Starmie which is another threat (but you have a great check in Jolteon).
Vaporeon seems pretty redundant with defensive Politoed, so it would be the one that is replaced. Celebi still functions as a status absorber in any weather.

Celebi @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 216 SDef / 40 Spd
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Giga Drain
- U-turn / Baton Pass
- Recover
- Perish Song / HP Ice / Psychic

You can also run Perish Song on Toed to free up space for a coverage move on Celebi. U-Turn is great for scouting but Baton Pass allows you to escape Pursuiters too. Obviously Perish Song and Baton Pass should not be used together.

Run this EV spread on Donphan for more powerful EQs (2HKOs Haxorus after rocks) and Ice Shards: 252 HP / 80 Atk / 176 Def

Lastly Grass Knot is COMPLETLY useless on Tornadus as it doesn't even OHKO Gastrodon from my experience. You should run Rain Dance instead so that you can set up Rain in lategame if you have lost the Weather war. Heat Wave is also an option to hit Ferro and Rachi outside of Rain as both seem to be quite hard to take down.

GL with the team.

Hi MrBallsy

Welcome to Smogon and solid rain team you've built here. You have a nice Voltturn core in Scizor, Jolteon, and Tornadus-T all of which are powerful attackers that can force switches and rack up entry hazard damage. I do have some suggestions I'd like to offer to help improve your team. Looking at your team, one major threat to is Choice Scarf Rotom-W. Scarf Rotom-W is quite a common Pokemon who can outspeed every member on your team, resist the two forms of priority you are using, and hit hard with either Super Effective Volt Switches or Rain boosted Hydro Pumps. A defensive threat to your team is Ferrothorn. The only ways you have of hitting him are with Superpower on Scizor and Tornadus-T, the former means you will be locked into a decreasingly powerful non-STAB attack and the latter being quick weak without investment and STAB. Hurricane from Tornadus-T will hurt Ferrothorn but he must beware of a powerful Gyro Ball from the plant. For these threats, I suggest trying a Calm Mind Virizion with a moveset of Calm Mind / Giga Drain / Focus Blast / Hidden Power [Ice] in place of Vaporeon. Virizion's great special bulk allows her to easily tank any hit from Rotom-W and eliminate the washing machine with Giga Drain. Focus Blast allows you to hit Ferrothorn for super effectve while HP Ice is for Flying and Dragon types. CM Virizion provides your team with a setup sweeper which you currently do not have. She can easily clean up late game by boosting up with CM and recovering the health lost while setting up with Giga Drain. The consequence of losing Vaporeon is that you will lose your Wish passer, but Wish passing is increasingly difficult in this offensive base metagame and you already have a bulky Water in Politoed.

Now for some smaller changes. I'd like to support KnivesNPistols suggestion of using an EV spread of 252 HP / 80 Atk / 176 Def on Donphan. The attack investment allows for the 2HKO on Landorus with Ice Shard as well as a more powerful Earthquake. On Tornadus-T I suggest replacing Grass Knot with Air Slash. Air Slash gives Tornadus-T a Flying STAB attack that is much more accurate than Hurricane outside of Rain and comes with a handy flinch chance if you need to get some hax to wear down the opponent. Losing Grass Knot won't be that critical since Virizion easily handles Rotom-W and Gastrodon.

Hope I helped and good luck with your team!

Set:
Virizion @ Leftovers
Trait: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
-Calm Mind
-Giga Drain
-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power [Ice]

tl;dr
Vaporeon ----> Calm Mind Virizion
Donphan's EV spread ----> 252 HP / 80 Atk / 176 Def with Impish Nature
Grass Knot on Tornadus-T ----> Air Slash

Thank you guys for all of your suggestions!
Kiyo I really liked the idea of a rest hydration vaporeon set, and I'm currently using it now. I actually left heal bell on there as I switched my phazer to politoed. Knives and pistols- your celebi idea was a godsend to the team. I made a new team with that in place of vaporeon, and it countered the grass sweepers in sun teams as well as breloom behind a sub as well as all the threats you mentioned. Also, the 80 attack investment on donphan that was brought up was noted and it's been pretty great so far. My favorite improvement was rain dance on Tornadus. -Novaray, air slash was a good suggestion but if i can keep up rain with rain dance i might as well leave it with just hurricane :). Anyway, I now have two teams - one with celebi and one with the new vaporeon and they are both looking quite good. Thanks everyone! Also, novaray, I kinda like your idea of having a virizion for an offensive pokemon that can take special hits, and I will try it out asap!
