Volt-Turning With A Difference
Hello all.
It's me, your benevolent Ninja Overlord, back, this time, with an OU RMT, after an alarming call-to-arms. I suppose I better introduce myself, for I haven't spent much time here in the OU Sections of the forum, but have rather done most of my posts in the RU/NU Sections. On to the introduction: Hello, I am Ninja Dewott, I am awesome. Nice to meet you.
With the plesantries out of the way, let me tell you why I chose to use this kind of team: I took my break from OU just about at the time when the whole Volt-Turn craze was kicking off. I'd experimented with RU versions of it and, when I came back to OU, I was keen to see what all the fuss was.
I'd originally tried a Scizor/Rotom-W core, as was the standard, but I found this was too bland and predictable and I couldn't quite get a grip on the scrotom. Core. So, I decided to pursue a different route: a F/W/G core, something that I'd used to great success in the past, in many of the tiers. However, as I had in mind that I wanted to have a weather inducer in the team (namely Politoed) the whole "Fire" part of it didn't work so well. Hence the Psychic/Dark/Fighting Core you see.
Finally, before I move on to the Detailed Look, I'd like to thank many of my clan members over at serebii for helping me get back into OU and teaching me a bit about what's changed, and even giving me some tips about Volt-Turn.
Team In Detail

"So go on and let the rain pour, I'll be all you need and more"
You're my #1 (Politoed) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Toxic
- Protect
- Perish Song
While a defensive Politoed may seem rather unorthodox on such an offensive team, there is a perfectly good reason behind it. Politoed acts as a good defensive pivot with his great typing and reasonable bulk. He can tank hits from things that may set up as I U-turn out and would otherwise sweep my team. For example, if I utilise protect correctly, +2 Max Attack Cloyster fails to 2HKO with Rock Blast. In the meantime, I can stall it out with Toxic, hopefully taking it it out or, at the very least, leaving it easy to revenge by the priority on my team. So Toxic + Protect are very important for those reasons. But what about the other moves? Well, Scald is an excellent attack on defensive Politoed, due to it's reasonable high-power and good burn chance, however, I'm considering replacing this with Surf/Hydro Pump, since Politoed already walls many phsyical attackers well. Perish Song is a last-resort and is very useful for getting rid of pokemon who are setting up in my face, or even for trolling my opponent when he's on his last pokemon
Synergy For The Winergy Check
- Hydreigon, Scizor
- Hydreigon

"My movepool is as big as Ninja Dewott's manhood"
Space Cat (Mew) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Volt Switch
- Focus Blast
- Trick
Specs Mew is a nice little gem that I stumbled upon and it's proved very effective in many situations. With Choice Specs, Mew has great damage output and it's natural bulk allows it to take hits well too. Psychic is STAB and will deal plenty of damage to any non-resistors/special walls. I've chosen it over Psyshock because I have Trick for crippling the likes of Blissey. Focus Blast is great coverage and pairs well with Mew's STAB, hitting stuff it can't such as Steel and Dark Types. Volt Switch is good for preserving momentum and is the reason why Mew can have a spot on this team. Trick, as I've mentioned already, is good for crippling walls such as Blissey and Ferrothorn. Mew also forms the first part of my Core, which I have named "The Mewshaogon Core". Great name, if I do say so myself.
Synergy For The Winergy Check
- Hydreigon, Mienshao, Scizor
- Mienshao, Scizor

"I have three heads. Soon you shall have none. Rawr."
Rawr (Hydreigon) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 40 SDef / 216 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- U-turn
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Focus Blast
Hydreigon forms the second part of my Mewshaogon core, and also acts as a revenge killer. The EVs allow him to outspeed stuff like +1 Dragonite whilst maximising power and also giving it a bit extra Special Defense, letting it counter pokes like Rotom-W easier. Draco Meteor and Dark Pulse are powerful STAB attacks and deal a lot of damage. U-turn is pretty obvious on this team as it allows me to grab that all important momentum. Finally, Focus Blast completes the set by allowing me to hit Steel Types and other pokemon such as Tyranitar who would otherwise not take much damage from Hydreigon.
Synergy For The Winergy Check
- Mew, Starmie
- Mienshao, Scizor
- Scizor
- Politoed, Scizor, Starmie

"I always get rubbish Christmas presents, this jumper that's two sizes too big, for example"
Floppy (Mienshao) (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Fake Out
- Hi Jump Kick
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
Mienshao rounds off my Mewshaogon core and is probably the MVP of this team. Honestly, I'm really surprised I don't see him more often, especially on Volt-Turn teams. His excellent ability, Regenerator, allows him to hit and run with LO support, without fearing the recoil. Mienshao's high speed allows him to come in, Fake Out then U-turn (both doing considerable damage thanks to it's good attack and LO) to escape and regain health, then rinse and repeat. Hi Jump Kick is a brilliant STAB which just wrecks stuff thanks to it's fantastic BP and the Life Orb. Meinshao doesn't even fear the miss recoil as much, thanks to Regenerator. Finally, Stone Edge is coverage and hits Ghosts coming in on HJK for heavy damage.
Synergy For The Winergy Check
- None, but it's an uncommon attacking type anyway
- Mew, Hydreigon, Scizor, Starmie

"Give me a scotch. I'm starving."
Tony Stark (Scizor) (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- U-turn
- Bug Bite
- Superpower
- Bullet Punch
My favourite pokemon for competitive use appears on this team too. Despite the fact I neglected Rotom-W, I couldn't do the same to this guy, as he provides such awesome synergy with many of the other team members and is great for gaining momentum with a powerful STAB U-turn. The other moves are for when I fancy doing a bit of sweeping or if I need something dead. Bug Bite is a brilliant, STAB + Technician boosted STAB and the same goes for Bullet Punch which has the added benefit of being priority. Very useful. Superpower is coverage and allows me to hit the likes of Heatran. The EV spread maximises Scizor's power and bulk whilst allowing him to outspeed pokemon like Metagross with no speed investment.
Synergy For The Winergy Check
- Politoed, Hydreigon, Starmie
~ ~ ~
"Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are..."
Twinkle (Starmie) @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 12 HP / 244 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Rapid Spin
- Surf
- Thunder
- Ice Beam
One good bit of advice that was passed on to me, however obvious, was to keep dem hazards away. Starmie is, in my opinion, the best spinner by a long shot, thanks to it's ability to directly threaten many spin-blockers. For example, the two ghost types in OU, Gengar and Jellicent, are easily handled by Starmie, the former being outsped and OHKOd by Surf and the latter 2HKOd by Thunder, whilst it can do little in return, save for the rare Shadow Ball or Hex. Surf is a great STAB attack, boosted to insane powers by the rain. Thunder also benefits from the rain, giving it perfect accuracy. Ice Beam rounds off the set with great coverage against Dragons, amongst others. The choice of Leftovers over a Life Orb may seem odd at first, but I find the drop in power is compensating by the rain, which boosts Starmie's Surf and allows it to run the more powerful Thunder over Thunderbolt. Leftovers gives it more survivability, allowing Starmie to stay alive and perform its important spinning role, a role arguably more important on this type of team than any other. Speaking of leftovers, the slightly weird EV spread makes Starmie hit a leftovers number and maximises its recovery.
Synergy For The Winergy Check
- Hydreigon, Mienshao, Scizor

Closing Comments
This team has done surprisingly well, considering it's my first upon return to OU and it was only created a few days ago. It's certainly helped me familiarise myself with OU again, and I'm quite happy about how I'm doing. I'm also greatly pleased about how this team uses many of the underrated threats in the OU metagame to great effect. Indeed, my entire Mewshaogon core is made of pokemon that one probably wouldn't first turn (pun intended) to when making a team. However, I'm not to bothered about retaining this if you feel you have a better replacement.
So, thanks for reading, all comments and critism are most greatly appreciated.
