[SET]
name: Sun Setter
move 1: Weather Ball
move 2: Memento
move 3: Encore
move 4: Toxic
item: Heat Rock
ability: Drought
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
As a result of its Drought ability, Vulpix has a niche in the NFE tier as a sun supporter and is a staple on sun teams. In addition to Drought-boosted Weather Ball to punish Steel-types such as Ferroseed and Klang, it has access to Memento, which allows its teammates to safely switch in. Encore allows Vulpix to prevent opposing Pokemon from setting up or grant itself and its teammates free turns by temporarily locking Pokemon such as Duosion or Lampent into an unfavorable move. Toxic can be used to cripple bulky Pokemon such as Vullaby and Galarian Corsola. Sunny Day can be used to help ease playing around sun turns against the rare Hippopotas by replacing sand after it switches into Vulpix. Solar Beam can also be used instead of Toxic to threaten Water-types like Palpitoad and Wartortle; however, the coverage isn't necessary due to Vulpix's weak Special Attack stat and Grass-type teammates being able to provide that coverage.
Vulpix should be used to set up the sun. As a result, Charmeleon, Raboot, Chlorophyll Tangela, and Chlorophyll Gloom are good teammates for it. Vulpix can use Memento on slower attackers such as Machoke and Piloswine to allow the aforementioned Growth sweepers to set up safely. Vulpix and other Fire-type teammates get worn down by Stealth Rock very easily, so Pokemon such as Hattrem and Vullaby are good teammates, as they prevent or remove Stealth Rock through Magic Bounce and Defog, respectively. Vullaby can also use U-turn to allow Vulpix and its teammates to switch in safely. Fire-types like Lampent and Carkol are troublesome for Vulpix and sun sweepers alike, so they should be targeted with teammates such as Piloswine and Wartortle, the latter in particular being able to take advantage of Weather Ball to target its would-be checks like Ferroseed and Roselia.
