Wailord moveset in Sword and Shield

With the introduction of Dynamaxing, Wailord can be scary if used right. His massive HP bulk gets doubled in Dynamax, going over 1000 HP which can tank a lot of hits, even with low EV defence and special defence. Wailord also has access to a lot of hard hitting moves with a lot of drawbacks like Water Spout and Hyper Beam; powered up with Dynamax, they become max hitting attacks that can add to his already huge bulk. Let’s look at an example build:

Wailord @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpA
Mild Nature
- Water Spout
- Hyper Beam
- Blizzard
- Heavy Slam

This set capitalises on Dynamax boosts. Max Geyser when powered up from Water Spout removes the need to be at full HP to use and hits like a truck, and sets rain up so the next Max Geyser will be even stronger. Max Strike when powered up with Hyper Beam is another hard hitting move that reduces the target’s speed, which would give Wailord the edge against slower targets. Max Hailstorm with Blizzard could be detrimental for Wailord due to summoning Hail, but it helps to destroy Grass, Dragon and Flying types, adding an extra layer of coverage. And Max Steelspike when powered up with Heavy Slam can hit hard and increase Wailord’s defence stat, making him just that bit harder to kill. The downside is it is short lived only lasting three turns, but depending how you play, Wailord can be an an excellent late-game bulky sweeper. You can try run Rest and Sleep Talk as well so that when Wailord comes out of Dynamax, you can Rest and restore the use of Water Spout. Running Amnesia or Choice Specs could add to this, but it’s worth testing.
