War Story: MacArthur's Last Stand!

Wait, seriously? The warstory forum closed down? But I love them.

Anyway, I just fought my favorite battle in months. It was awesome. I really enjoyed it. And I've got a feeling that you will too! For those of you that hate it when opponents take the advantage with wacky surprise sets and a good ole fashioned critical hit (and you know I do), enjoy a comeback the likes of which I've never seen before.

I probably would have seen it before if war stories were still here. Damn, man. Bring them back!

Anonymous (henceforth "Reggie", I didn't get around to asking his permission and I don't wanna put his name out there without it)

(Fun Fact: Honchkrow, Flygon and Kingdra are #430, #330 and #230 in the National Pokedex. Thanks for the info, gif names!)

Pre-Battle

I figure he's gonna lead with Sableye, Flygon or Rhyperor to scout, taunt or set up. Crobat loves scouting Flygons by living through scarfed stone edges with ease, doesn't mind getting burnt by stray Will-o-Wisps thanks to my Roserade's Aromatherapy, and U-turns into Gligar for Rhyperior (the latter survives non-banded Ice Punches.) Crobat it is!

Kipling the Crobat is amazing, but he's not about to live through a Stone Edge. Totally not worth the risk to try and Taunt him from setting up Stealth Rock, as I can just spin later. Better get out of here!

These are the kinds of critical hits I'm used to getting. The kind that does 20%. As expected, Rhyperior set up his rocks, but this means he isn't banded, so time for Stalin to even the field.

Stalin used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!

I don't like Kingdra. I doubt many teams do. It seems a bit early for the guy to be setting up, but Blastoise survives Hydro Pump and a Dragon Danced Outrage while Snorlax hates the latter. God I love having two phazers.

Little did I know that my hero was coming to the field.

Good thing Snorlax isn't here. Now, I could risk switching back to Gligar, assuming he knows I'm gonna roar, because Stalin doesn't really care about +1 Outrage. But it's early, and MacArthur is tough, and I don't wanna risk another Dragon Dance for no reason. Better get rid of him.

Not too shabby, Blastoise. It appears that Flygon, for whatever reason, has Leftovers. I'd rather not scout what moves it has at 53%, so I switch on back to Stalin to take whatever he's got, assuming he's not about to Fire Blast.

Hazards: Rocks on both teams

That's pretty annoying. I really don't wanna do that to Blastoise again, so I figure I'll try another approach: Raikou. He'll survive a +1 Outrage without much health left, but in the meantime he'll do a nice amount of damage to Kingdra and, if Kingdra Outrages, I can switch back to Gligar and roost him until confusion comes up. When that happens it's one more U-turn as Kingdra switches or attempts to hit through confusion (even Waterfall wouldn't kill at this point) and I can Body Slam the poor guy with Snorlax. He's finished, but damn, Kingdra's really hurting me.

Raikou's sort of dead weight against Reggie's team, only really useful against Kingdra and Honchkrow (and Flygon, given he won't outspeed my CM Raikou without his scarf, but without a scarf or band he's not too much of a worry to anybody). I can take care of Honchkrow more reliably with Gligar anyway, and I wanna put the hurt on this Kingdra. Bye, Raikou!

U-Turn doin work. Tesla's got no defensive investment, but let's face it, Kingdra isn't that tough at the moment and Raikou's raw stats let it survive one hit. That's all I need.

Son of a.

Alright, not only a crit, but he's not confused yet. Gligar is pretty important against this team, walling Honchkrow and Rhyperior (assuming he doesn't have Ice Punch, which is probable given he would've probably used it), as well as Flygon unless this leftover set is really weird. Moreover it deals with standard Cobalion. This is very, very, very bad.

He won't survive another switch-in with rocks up, and Sableye's not gonna let me reliably spin. I'm either gonna sacrifice Gligar or Raikou, but seeing as only one is guaranteed one more move I'm afraid it's time for Stalin to go down. I can hear Russia cheering.

Huh. First Leftovers Flygon, now Toxic Sableye. I get deviations from standard sets when they're good, but this doesn't seem to be one of those cases. Oh well, I certainly don't mind. Half my team is poison immune; well, two fifths now that poor Stalin's underground.

In any case time to try for some hazards. Even if he taunts, nothing to lose.

Of course he's got a special Cobalion. Fits in perfectly with his weird Flygon and Sableye. Welp, Crobat's pretty much dead in the water. I roost in case he tries a clever switch, then allow Kipling to die for a switch. The other three members are still more important, but I've resigned myself to losing to his Honchkrow. Horror-struck, Reggie tries to kick me out of the match to no avail. I stay asleep for a while as he roosts.

Obviously Scald could finish the guy off, but there isn't enough hazard-power to off Kingdra just yet. Scald does about as much damage to Kingdra as Leftovers heal, so if I kill off Rhype now Kingdra can potentially wake up, heal up and beat me. Which would be really sad. At 100% health Blastoise can survive anything Rhyperior throws at him.

Conclusion
There are several things to take away from this match. First, that you can't play sloppy when the RNG slaps you around. Second, that sets need more than surprise factor to be viable, as once the initial confusion passes you still need to come through. Third, that you shouldn't mess around even when you're up 5-1. And fourth, that I have the world's greatest Blastoise.

Oh jeez, that Blastoise is incredibly beast.

I am slapping Rest onto my Blastoise as I type this in. I've got my own cleric, so no worries on this end.

One thing I'm impressed with is your forethought in NOT killing Rhydon and instead letting Kingdra get phazed back out for the kill. Although I would've probably kept spamming Roar anyway, it's always tempting to get that Scald in on a 4x SE.

Nice warstory on the whole, but no kudos to your opponent. LEFTOVERS Flygon and Leftovers+Rest on Kingdra? Peh! Still, always nice seeing a 5-1 reversal. Awesome naming scheme too.
