What is Next Best's Thing?
Next Best Thing is a project where players search through a listed Pokémon's movepool along with providing and explaining why this set should be used over a standard set. Every cycle/week, participants of this project will submit and create a new set for the selected Pokemon, and near the end of the week, voting will occur. Submissions will take place from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday, voting will occur for your nomination to be featured in our Hall of Fame!

Rules
You can be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets. It is also important that you understand the difference between a creative set and a gimmicky set- this project is meant to use creativity to maximize a Pokemon's potential, not produce gimmicks. We may disallow sets if we deem them too gimmicky, situational, or unoriginal.
  • Suggestions are welcome for Pokémon to cover in the future, but please directly send those to me in a DM for direct consideration rather than posting them here to be considered (more)!
  • Please do not reserve a set that currently has an analysis or is in the process of being created.
  • Voting for your own set is not allowed and advertising for people to vote for your set will result in a disqualification in your submission.
  • You may reserve a set, but if you haven't properly filled it in within 2 days of your reservation, it may be taken by someone else.
  • Follow the forum rules, meaning that you shouldn't post one-liners, unless voting. Try to also avoid double-posting if possible.

Cycle 1: When You Wish Upon A Star (Jirachi)
:sv/jirachi:
Jirachi shines with its variety of sets that essentially in my eyes at least can support and make annoying progress with Serene Grace in contandum with moves with secondary efforts like Body Slam and utility/support options in Trick, Stealth Rock, and Encore. Jirachi has a few sets banned currently on the SV RU Smogdex right now in nascar utility Stealth Rocks, CM + Psychic Noise + Grass Knot + Aura Sphere | Thunder | Shadow, and the consistent Choice Scarf + Trick + Healing Wish pivot set. The deadline for submissions will end on August 29th.

Jirachi @ Eject Button
Ability: Serene Grace
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 236 HP / 100 Def / 52 SpD / 120 Spe

Jirachi @ Weakness Policy

This set is what one would consider "evil setup bullshit", but it's some pretty effective setup bullshit. The main goal of this set is baiting a super effective move (of which there are PLENTY), and using that to proc WP and then sweep from there. Cosmic Power allows Jirachi to start taking way more hits than it normally can, allowing you to actually take those super effective moves, Wish allows jirachi to stick around and generally just be an unkillable wall, and Drain Punch and Stored Power allow Jirachi to both sweep and hit pretty much everyone in the tier HARD. Drain Punch is to target the steels, as well as blissey, tera dark or no, and Stored Power is the big button that scales the bulkier you get. Tera Fighting is the Tera Type of choice to flip it's 2 main weaknesses of Dark, and Ground around, allowing you to not only hit harder with Drain Punch but also be able to turn off those weaknesses once you get your WP proc.

While this set's main weakness is not being able to withstand faster and stronger attacks from the likes of CB entei and CB Gapdos, and does rely on getting hit to activate it's main damage maker, it's genuinely not that bad once it gets going, and can be a very effective cleaning option or wincon to play towards. It also struggles against CM psychics, which is why the rest of the team is like that, with mean look A-Muk to force tera poison on Slowbro, with Bellibolt to slow down gapdos and other physical attackers, and Kleavor to generally out-offense opposing offense teams, Mmq to break shit in a pinch, all to enable the goober that is CosPower Rachi.

I truly believe this set is The Next Best Option, as it allows Jirachi to pursue an all new niche that completely unique to it, is effective, and is more than capable of making solid progress, if not outright winning if it gets the opportunity to set up, as w/ wish it can solidify it's position on the field, and make it so that you literally cannot hit it with a super effective move cause then it gets even stronger, meaning this set is perfect for scamming wins, and generally just netting you free games.

Below are some very relevant calcs that SuperRachi 2 (patent pending) can hit.

+2 8 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 104 HP / 0 Def Cyclizar: 308-364 (100.3 - 118.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO (so you can always prevent dragon tail)
+2 8 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 4 HP / 252 Def Blissey: 430-508 (65.9 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 8 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Umbreon: 200-236 (50.7 - 59.8%) -- 85.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 112- SpA Jirachi Stored Power (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Tera Poison Umbreon: 362-428 (91.8 - 108.6%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
+2 8 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Goodra-Hisui: 204-242 (56 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

and ofc stored power kills like everyone

A legend states that JIRACHI will make true any wish that is written on notes attached to its head when it awakens.
- Pokemon Ruby, Jirachi's Dex entry.

This set answers the question: What if a millennia's wish was to bring doom upon Hyper Offense and mess with a family of four:maushold:?

Introducing......
:sv/Jirachi:

Jirachi @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Serene Grace
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- U-turn
- Wish
- Thunder Wave / Future Sight
- Protect / Psychic Noise

This set aims to fill the void that is the lack of the slow pivots in the metagame.
Using Jirachi's solid line of resistances and good defensive stats, it is able to switch into a multitude of threats, punish them with its helmet and pivot in one of its teammates without hurting itself too much.

With 0 Spe IVs, it is able to underspeed every relevant offensive threat in the metagame.

Explaining the moveset:
- Wish is the main reason to use it over Incineroar as it allows it to act as a decent cleric while healing itself to help its own longevity :alomomola:
- Twave gives it an option to spread status and scare away certain threats from switching onto it and trying to setup or deal enough damage to break it.
- Fsight can be chosen over Twave to reduce its passivity and help position certain teammates such as Gapdos :Zapdos-galar:
- Protect combos well with Wish, allowing for safe recovery.:audino-mega:
- Psychic Noise can be used over Protect for a better matchup into stall and bulky offense as Jirachi, even with minimal investment still outspeeds Pokemon such as Gastrodon and Slowbro.:gastrodon: :slowbro:

Good teammates include:

:sv/Zapdos-galar:
Zapdos and Jirachi cover very well for each other's weaknesses and jirachi can help item-locking be less of a drawback for Zapdos with the pressure of Future Sight.
:sv/cyclizar:
AV Cyclizar compliments Jirachi almost perfectly, even after Jirachi uses tera fairy and its spin support allows jirachi to keep switching in and doing its job without fear of hazard chip.
:sv/mamoswine:
Mamoswine appreciates Jirachi manually getting it in and is the biggest benefiter from the Twave set as it allows it to touch Pokemon it never dreamt of touching with its speed.

Physical Sweeper Jirachi
Jirachi @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Serene Grace
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Drain Punch
- Thunder Punch

This set aims to capitalize on rachi's physical movepool and sweep teams. Meteor Mash is a poor man's steel type Power-Up Punch, hence the Weakness Policy (also helps that it has a plethora of weaknesses to proc wp). Even then, the 40% for +1 attack boosts its breaking potential beyond its wp. Drain Punch provides more longevity, hits steel types, as well as bliss. Thunder Punch checks water types such as gyara and volc. Zen Headbutt pairs well with Thunder Punch, as it nails bro if it dares to tera poison. Finally, tera fighting flips its dark and ground weaknesses and gives more recovery with STAB Drain Punch.

Faster, stronger mons such as cb gapdos, lorb lycan, gar, and scarf krook threaten rachi. Hippo, belli, and other physical walls are also problematic, as they can chip it down with helmet and/or retaliate with a ground move or status. However, it can hit hard once its checks are worn down/gone and activates wp.

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 64 Def Goodra-Hisui: 256-302 (70.3 - 82.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 104 HP / 0 Def Cyclizar: 386-456 (125.7 - 148.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO (for dtail)

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tera Poison Umbreon: 402-474 (102 - 120.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO (2HKO for max def)

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 188+ Def Amoonguss: 422-498 (97.6 - 115.2%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Drain Punch vs. 4 HP / 252 Def Blissey: 540-636 (82.8 - 97.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (OHKO with tera fighting)

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 184-218 (46.7 - 55.3%) -- 71.1% chance to 2HKO

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tera Poison Slowbro: 294-348 (74.6 - 88.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252 Atk Jirachi Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gastrodon: 199-235 (46.7 - 55.1%) -- 70.3% chance to 2HKO
