Welcome to the GyaraZone! ( First Real Team, Feedback Appreciated)

Origins (For both me and the Team)

Hello Smogon, you maybe not know me or even saw me on other but that's natural.
I started to played competitively around the middle of gen 4 and took a long hiatus in the middle of B1W1. I still however kept up with the metagame and watch other people battle on youtube. I also lurked around Smogon pretty hardcore but never really contributed to anything. I built other teams in my early days but they were really gimmicky and I won based on luck ( Quick Claw + Confuse Ray Jellicent god help me).

What brought me back? I never had control of the teams I watched and i really wanted to see certain pokemon together in action. I got fed up with it and returned to battling.

Now, I wanted to based my team around my favorite pokemon : Gyarados and Magnezone, hence the title. They form a pretty efffective core and cover eachother's weaknesses perfectly ( as far as I can tell). I also never saw a RMT with Magnezone in it.

But enough about me! Lets get this RMT underway

The main duo of the team. I can't tell how perfectly they cover eachother's SE weaknesses defensively. They both deal great amounts of damage and they will be the ones weakening the opposing trainer's pokemons.

Next on our checklist is a Stealth Rock Setter/ Spikes Stacker. We all know the best one for the job is Deoxys-D. In almost every game, i got to set SR + a layer of spikes and sometimes sticky web if the opposing lead has it. The best part is that I feel safe about losing them to RS or Defog because Deoxys is so bulky. Definitely a good member for the team.

Deoxys unfortunately has weaknesses that my other members can't necessarily deal with. In comes Clefable. Being a pure fairy, it only has two weaknesses that Magnezone resist or is immune to. I can also serve as a good Spd Wall. Overall, it has great synergy.

Now that my defensive core is done, i notice my team desperately needs a Revenge Killer. The GyaraZone core isn't the fastest thing in the tier and may have somes troubles against fast threats. I decided to choose Garchomp because he's one of the best Choice Scarf users in the game and with the stats he has, he can killl important threats like a Dragonite after I break Multiscales. He also doesn't add a lot of noticeable weaknesses aswell. After Magnezone/Gyarados to their job, Garchomp can come in and clean up.

Time for my Defogger! I rummage through the list of hazard removers before I could nominate a few. It came down to the Lati@s twins.I opted for Latios because my team lacked a fast special attacker.

The problem with Latios is that Bisharp can come in the get a defiant boost and Pursuit trap him if I mispredict. I shrugged it off as a threat to watch out for but Bisharp is no joke! Magnezone dies just because of the boost and I have no real member to deal with it. I had to replace Clefable with Conkeldurr just because of it works very well with the team. it has access to the much needed FIghting move and Dark resist. It can also absorb incoming statuses and get a big boost. If still trying to find a way to get Clefable into the team but for now, Conkeldurrr fills the hole I need.

Thanks to Dr Ciel, I was able to find a better replacement for Latios that isn't so threaten by Bisharp and can help me out with some other threats as well. I felt more comfortable to defog with her.
Movesets/Evs

462.gif

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SAtk / 30 Spd
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Flash Cannon

Part of the main duo of my team. Magnezone's role is to come in on any steel type and kill it.
I dropped my Atk IVs down to zero to lessen the damage for confusion and Foul Play. Magnezone doesnt really need speed so its put into HP. The best is that it can survive Talonflame's Flare Blitz and OHKO it back with any of it's electric attacks (I'll add calcs later). Modest nature to maximize it's firepower. Hidden Power Fire was used to destroy the steel types it traps. Volt Switch for momentum while T-Bolt is for extra power. Flash Cannon is for stab and Mamoswine if I predict him.
130.gif

Gyarados @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Bounce
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

The second half of the core. This is a standard issued DD Gyarados with Bounce. I run Intimidate over Moxie to lower any Physical Attacker's power and possibly get a sub or DD up. Not a lot of things can wreck this boy after I get a DD up. Water Fall for a Stab move and Bounce for Mega/Venusaur that dares to stay in. Earthquake is really useful to handle Aegislash that have King's Shield.

Deoxys-Defense @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes
- Recover
- Seismic Toss

The set we all know and love/hate. Deoxys-D is recognized as one the best hazards setters in the tier. With it's bulk and surprising base speed, it can get multiple layers of spikes and SR up. Recover is handy to heal off more Damage or PP stall. Seismic toss to deal a good 100 damage. (Thank you Timpsu for the set idea). Note that you could replace Seismic with superpower if you want to deal SE damage against Mamo or something but the Def drops can hurt a bit if i'm stalling with it.
445.gif

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Outrage
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

Ah yes, the scarfed Garchomp. The deadliest Garchomp. I really don't know what to say about him that hasn't been said. This monster of a land shark can OHKO or 2HKO almost anything I want it to kill. EVs are fairly obviously so I won't talk about them. Dragon Claw if I wanna use a dragon move and not be locked in. Other than that, I mostly click Outrage and something dies. Stone Edge is for any Flying or bug type (I'm looking at you PINSIR) and Earthquake for ground coverage.

630.gif

Mandibuzz (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 180 Def / 24 SDef / 56 Spd
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Knock Off
- Foul Play
- Roost

My defogger. I originally had Latios but he was too weak to Bisharp. My team is also weak to M-Gyarados. Mandibuzz has the same duty as Latios but isn't as weak.Mandibuzz can realibly check it and sorta counter it with this moveset. It's 3HKO by a +1 Ice Fang by M-Gyarados so it can counter attack with Foul Play while recovering with Roost (applies to basically every sweeper).Did I mention it counters/checks Aegislash unlike Latios?(Thank you Dr Ciel for all the info).
534.gif

Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 236 SDef / 20 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch
- Knock Off

My big man Conkeldurr!
I originally had Clefable as my dedicated Special Wall but it couldn't lift the weights Conkeldurr can (Literally and metaphorically). He can deal with the menacing Bisharp and other annoying walls such as Chansey/Blissey.He's also the one coming in on status moves for the guts boosts. Drain Punch for the reliable healing it offers, Mach Punch for priority to kill something like Greninja. Knock Off, the move more hyped than Fairy type, to get rid of Chansey's Eviolite or anything from Aegislash. Ice Punch for the coverage. 20 Speed is utilize to outspeed Hippodown so it won't Slack Off stall me. (Thank you Dr Ciel)

That's the team folks! as an end note, I would like any suggestions of members I could replace (Not Magnezone or Gyarados). If you do suggest something please make an importable set so I can playtest it.

Change Log!
You know, for the changes suggested by you guys.
  • Replaced Latios with Mandibuzz, it basically does it's job better and contributes more to the team. (Dr Ciel)
  • Gave Gyarados Life Orb and switched Subtitute with Earthquake (Dr Ciel)
  • Modified Deoxys' set so it can act more of a Physical Wall than a Suicide Lead (Timpsu)
  • Gave Conkeldurr 20 Speed and 236 SDef EVs (Dr Ciel)
Importables!

Magnezone @ Choice Specs

Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SAtk / 30 Spd
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt

- Flash Cannon

Gyarados @ Life Orb

Replays!

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-114010077

Finally faced against a good opponent while laddering my new account. I made some pretty obvious plays, him setting up at the wrong times and my GyaraZone core didn't put in a lot of work like Conkeldurr or Mandibuzz., iI still thinks it's worth watching.

Hey! Decided to come and give this team a quick rate.

The problem with Magnezone in this gen is that there are actually only few Steel-types you can reliably trap and kill. Last gen there were plenty defensive Steel-types who just waited to get trapped, but in this gen most Steel-types are offensive, and almost always carry a move that can hurt Zone hard. Knock Off is also very common, meaning you'll lose your Specs, which you definitely need to be viable. However, as Magnezone is part of your main core, I won't go replacing him, but I do doubt his viability as a Steel-trapper. You could maybe consider using some Speed EVs on him to outspeed something important, although HP investment does offer more switch-in opporunities. There's really only one Steel-type who is hit hard by HP Fire, and that's Ferrothorn. Thunderbolt hits Skarmory and Scizor hard enough, but I guess there's no point in running any other HP either. Also, I'm wondering why you have Red Card Deo-D placing your hazards. Red Card Deo-D is only useful if you have a spinblocker and a Defiant user, since Red Card Deo-D is meant to be played in a suicide fashion. If you intend to use Deo-D throughout the match, I suggest you replace Red Card with Leftovers, and use a physically defensive set with Recover.

I would also advise you to use Fire Blast on Garchomp, as that lets you get past Ferrothorn and Skarmory better. Dragon Claw can be easily switched to Fire Blast. In that case switch your nature to Naive. You could consider using Latias in place of Latios, as the increased bulk lets him use Defog + Roost more efficiently, while still hitting very hard with Life Orb. You could also put 20 Speed on Conkeldurr to outspeed Hippowdon, so he won't stall you with Slack Off. Hope my thoughts were of help, good luck with the team!

If u want a trapper go with gothitelle, in this case. Good against every kind of walls.

Gothitelle @ Choice Specs
Ability: Shadow Tag
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SAtk / 30 Spd
- Psychic / Pyshock
- Rest
- Hidden Power Fire
- Trick

Bulky version with rest. After u trick the wall in a move, u can rest for get back some HP.

Gothitelle @ Choice Specs
Ability: Shadow Tag
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 124 HP / 252 SAtk / 132 Spd
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SAtk / 30 Spd
- Psychic / Pyshock
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Fire
- Trick

U can outspeed mandibuzz / Venusaur and other based 80 uninvested. Tbolt is for skarmory / mandibuzz / slowbro. Kill this 2 defogger can help a lot your hazards.

Psychic or psyshock? In the early ladder there are more defensive venusaur. Around 1600 more special defensive (don't ask me why).

I don‘seed the sense Deo-D with defog.

Hi there, nice team.

Not a bad team you got here, a great Heavy Offense build. The synergy your team has is pretty good, & it seems you know what you're doing, so I won't change too much, but I will make some suggestions that can help your team out, as there are quite a few threats that your team will have trouble with. With that out of the way, let's get onto my rate. Now, from what I can see, your team struggles with Mega Gyarados, ironically, as it can set up on either Conkeldurr or Garchomp locked into Earthquake, set up a Dragon Dance & pretty much 2HKO your entire team, as your bulkiest Pokémon, Conkeldurr is 2HKOd by a +1 Waterfall, while you fail to OHKO with Drain Punch. For these reasons, I suggest that you replace your Latios with a Mandibuzz to help remedy this situation. Mandibuzz is a pretty reliant check, or even counter to Mega Gyarados, as it can take most of his attacks with ease, as she is only 3HKOd by a +1 Ice Fang & can retaliate with Foul Play, while keeping healthy with Roost. Moving on, I'd like to tweak your Gyarados's moveset. First, I suggest replacing Leftovers with a Life Orb solely for higher damage output in conjunction with the Adamant Nature. Next, I suggest running Earthquake over Substitute, in order to hit Aegislash mainly to prevent mind games from Aegislash. My last, & final suggestion would to change your Conkeldurr's EV spread to one of 252 Atk / 236 SpD / 20 Spe this helps Conkeldurr take hits from the special end of the spectrum easier.

Thanks for your reply guys! After replacing Latios and changing Deo/Conk a bit, I can definitely see some improvements in the performance. I'll make a change log now

I am new in smogon. The thing I am looking is that I want a replacement for conkeldurr and I think you have advanced knowledge about conkeldurrs so please suggest.

this team doesn't really have a switch in to mega zard Y, as even conk gets 2HKOd by fire blast.
252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr in Sun: 217-256 (52.4 - 61.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I suggest that you run a Mega somewhere in there.
Mega Gyarados fits the team quite comfortably, you just need to play around dangerous fairies like Azumarill.
And I also suggest you change Gyarados' ability into Moxie, since after a DD it can pick on weakened pokemon then get an attack boost too.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I am thinking how about Mega Kangaskhan. If Mega Kangaskhan is not available, I am going on the Mega Gyarados.

Thanks for you suggestions. Mega Gyarados is like a god in my team. The replacement make my team a lot better.
