What Makes a Good Team?

I'm sure that "Make Me a Team" threads are outlawed here, but I doubt this type of thread is.

What would you say makes a good team? Is there anything that all teams should have? I never made a good competitive team before.

I have a bunch of Pokemon to use, and don't mind breeding more, but what would you a good team would need?

I'm quite familiar with the game and the workings of it, I really am not a noob at all, just a bit new to competitive battling.

The answer to that question is far too long for me to type.

Generally:

Attacking power

Defensive power

No terrible weaknesses to certain things.

This won't help at all I just wanted to post.

Synergy, don't just put 6 random pokemon together, build defense around 1 pokemon, or make up a strategy, in example a Toxic Spikes team, just something that has a meaning, and that they actually work and succeed together as a group.

Generally, what you need is balance and diversity. A wide enough variety of attacks and types so that you have at least a chance of taking out anything you might come up against, focusing on common weaknesses and keeping defense in mind when you choose your types.

Okay. Also, what makes a good starter?
Something that can either take a hit or is really fast. It can be a team supporter or a standalone KOer, or both.

Such as metagross, ninjask or tyranitar.

Tyranitar has Sandstream, which sets the tone for a Sandstorm team, ninjask is invaluable for Baton Pass teams and slow heavy-hitters, Meta just sweeps.

A good starter should be able to help set up your team for whatever it needs. Ex: Ninjask can help baton into a powerful creature, Tyranitar auto-sandstorms a sand-stream team, Umbreon can trap-pass into a suitable counter. A general team must be able to handle most pokemon and have no glaring weaknesses. Ex: don't build a hail team with all ice pokemon, because an infernape will wipe them all out. balance it by having a gyrados. or a metagross.

It depends on your team; in general, you want something that puts you in an advantageous position right from the start - you want your lead to be versatile enough and properly equipped such that you should rarely have to switch on the first turn. High speed is generally a plus but not required.

a good lead, to me is one that will put you in the best position as early in the game as possible wheather it gets a quick KO or sets up entry hazards/prevents entry hazards or making weather conditions. All leads serve the same basic purpose to get an early advantage, bronzong is popular in this role because of it's sturdyness and ability to incapacitate one member of the opposing team with hypnosis while also stealth rocking. Then taunt leads came with the purpose to give it's user the advantage over said bronzongs. Leading the game on the right path is very important for any team.

This is exactly it.

Covering as many types as you can on the opposing team is important too.

In example Dragon,Ground,Bug,Flying,Ice,Normal,Fire,Fighting,Water (i'm going by dual typings evidently).
So you'll need to cover all the types mentioned (and most likely different type settings too)
A good selection for countering however is down to you.
Now some of you'll be saying "why say this?,we already know all this" but for info on this thread i think is passable :).
