What makes the current mod staff qualified?

The mod selection process is a mystery to us common folk. How do we know the current mod staff is different from the last one? How do we know that cookie didn't troll me into writing a 500 word essay. What happened to old Firebot? How do any of us know it wasn't another predator? How do we know it wasn't an extreme case of bullying? I have serious doubts considering the lack of a formal announcement.
