what were the magic numbers?

Weren't really around in the ruby/sapphire days.
I know some aren't as reliant anymore.

But what were the magic numbers, and why were they considerd, 'magic'

Well, I know of 264 Speed on Reversalers was nescisary (Cannot spell this morning :P) to reach 396 Speed afetr one Salac Boost, in order to outspeed the Base 130's (Jolteon, Areodactyl and the like.)

Most of the old magic numbers don't really apply any more. Things like 264 Speed on Reversalers/DDers are no longer as potent due to new items like Choice Scarf spoiling your fun (in fact, 270 seems to be what most Choice Scarfers are running to outspeed Adamant Hera by 1 point). The only ones that do, to an extent, still apply are the defensive ones versus pokémon like Blissey who will use the same EV spread (252 EVs HP, 252 EVs Defence). Even the ones against Swampert are outdated - as there are now new stronger Grass attacks that can easily OHKO. Add to that limitations of IVs on Wifi (if that's what you're wanting to play) and the old magic numbers are suddenly far less important. It will be a while before new ones set in, as the metagame is in its infancy.

Beating something like 405, for Choice Scarf Heracross now seems more important than beating Aero/Jolty. Plus you just never know what speed some things have. Scarf Azelf or Garchomp will have crazy speeds of 450~

Yeah, if you've got the EVs left to go for the old 198 with Agility or 264 with Dragon Dance or something, going for 203 or 270 is only better for very few EVs because of Scarf Heracross.

Basically there's no constructed metagame yet, so there's very few of these numbers. The change in the damage formula doesn't help either. Somewhere between 270 and 280 is the magic number for KOing Garchomp with Ice Beam iirc, which would replace the old 263 for Dragon Dance Salamence (which is now less because of the damage formula).
