VGC 21 Whimsicott

:whimsicott:

[OVERVIEW]

Whimsicott's Prankster Tailwind and lightning-fast playstyle make it a perfect choice for hyper offense teams, particularly those featuring Calyrex-S as a Restricted Pokemon. Due to the combination of Prankster and its high base Speed of 116, Whimsicott is the most reliable Tailwind setter in the metagame, making it a crucial pick for those that rely on moving first. It also comes armed with a bevy of support moves which allow it to fill all kinds of niches that very specific teams or cores may require, like fast Taunt, Sunny Day, or even the dreaded Switcheroo + Eject Button combo to disrupt opposing Dynamax users. Its Fairy-type attacks also pressure Dark-types like Yveltal and Grimmsnarl that are often used to counter Calyrex-S. However, Whimsicott does have glaring flaws; first and foremost, fast Tailwind is utterly ruined if the opponent is able to set up Trick Room. It also has to worry about being stopped in its tracks by Fake Out. Whimsicott's offensive presence is generally middling, so it relies on the power of partners like Calyrex-S, Kyogre, Kartana, and Regieleki to deal damage, often supported by its Helping Hand. This is a double-edged sword, however, as if its partner goes down during the turn, both it and its partner's efforts are effectively wasted.

[SET]
name: Prankster Support
move 1: Moonblast / Energy Ball / DazzlingGleam
move 2: Tailwind
move 3: Helping Hand
move 4: Protect / Taunt
item: Focus Sash
ability: Prankster
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Moonblast is Whimsicott's best option for single-target damage, but spread Dazzling Gleam allows Whimsicott to put more damage on the board as a whole. Energy Ball can be used on Kyogre teams as a means to hit Gastrodon.

* Prankster Tailwind is nearly guaranteed to go up, making Whimsicott a vital component of hyper offense teams where speed is everything.

* Helping Hand is a universally beneficial way for Whimsicott to boost its ally's offensive pressure instead of relying on its relatively weak Fairy coverage.

* Taunt can disrupt the opponent's attempts to counter Whimsicott such as Trick Room and opposing Tailwind.

* Focus Sash preserves Whimsicott for a future Tailwind or Helping Hand support, as its middling defenses leave it OHKOed by the majority of the metagame's attacks otherwise.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Coba Berry is helpful for allowing Whimsicott to survive a Max Airstream if your team's Focus Sash is already taken; however, this makes Whimsicott much easier to KO. Encore is useful for locking opponents into unfavorable moves like Protect and Trick Room, but optimal conditions don't always come up for it to be used, and it can be blocked by Psychic Terrain. Sunny Day can be used in its last moveslot to help check Kyogre, but Protect is generally more useful. Other speed control options like Trick Room and Cotton Spore can also turn the tables in Tailwind mirror matches.

However, Whimsicott does have glaring flaws; first and foremost, its value of fast Tailwind is utterly ruined if the opponent is able to set up Trick Room. It also has to worry about being stopped in its tracks by Fake Out. * Moonblast allows Whimsicott to deal more damage to a specific desired target, but spread Dazzling Gleam allows Whimsicott to put more damage on the board as a whole.

* Helping Hand is a universally beneficial way for Whimsicott to boost its ally's offensive pressure instead of relying on its relatively weak Fairy coverage.

* The combination of Switcheroo + Eject Button is particularly useful for forcing out opposing Dynamax Pokemon, as Whimsicott's fast partners can often hit and force out the opposing Pokemon before it can attack. Eject Button also has the use of sending in an ally immediately after Whimsicott sets Tailwind for maximizing momentum.

* Focus Sash can be used to preserve Whimsicott for a future Tailwind or Helping Hand support, as its middling defenses leave it OHKOed by the majority of the metagame's attacks otherwise.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Coba Berry is helpful for allowing Whimsicott to survive a Max Airstream, however, it must make a sacrifice between Speed investment or bulk investment.(Coba Berry should first remove its Special Attack no?, which hasn't been made clear.) If it invests in Speed, it can outrun Tornadus and Thundurus, but will have to choose between Defense or Special Defense, meaning it will still be OHKOed by Landorus-T and Thundurus or Zapdos and Tornadus depending on investment. Encore is useful for locking opponents into unfavorable moves like Protect and Trick Room, but optimal conditions don't always come up for it to be used, and it's blocked by Psychic Terrain.(Psychic Terrain is only first mentioned here in the analysis, makes sense to elaborate more on why this is important here. cause HO often uses Psy terrain activators) Energy Ball can be used as an alternate attack to hit Gastrodon and Seismitoad, but has a much more narrow range of targets than Fairy coverage. Fake Tears supports special attacking partners like Regieleki and Calyrex-S more than Helping Hand on average, but is blocked by Dark-types, Psychic Terrain, and is useless for supporting physical attacking allies. Sunny Day can be used in its last moveslot to help check Kyogre, but this is generally less payoff than Protect or Switcheroo can provide.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Coba Berry is helpful for allowing Whimsicott to survive a Max Airstream, however, it must make a sacrifice between Speed investment or bulk investment, in addition to being forced to run little to no Special Attack. If it invests in Speed, it can outrun Tornadus and Thundurus, but will have to choose between Defense or Special Defense, meaning it will still be OHKOed by Landorus-T and Thundurus or Zapdos and Tornadus depending on investment. Encore is useful for locking opponents into unfavorable moves like Protect and Trick Room, but optimal conditions don't always come up for it to be used, and it's blocked by Psychic Terrain, which has to be a consideration due to how often Indeedee, Indeedee-F, and Tapu Lele are used on hyper offense compositions. Taunt has similar uses but runs into similar problems, though the ability to outspeed and Taunt Tornadus before it can set Tailwind is a nice bonus. Energy Ball can be used as an alternate attack to hit Gastrodon and Seismitoad, but has a much more narrow range of targets than Fairy coverage. Fake Tears supports special attacking partners like Regieleki and Calyrex-S more than Helping Hand on average, but is blocked by Dark-types, Psychic Terrain, and is useless for supporting physical attacking allies. Sunny Day can be used in its last moveslot to help check Kyogre, but this is generally less payoff (not sure I like the word payoff here, but it's not objectively wrong) than Protect or Switcheroo can provide. Ladder heroes will insist Trick Room is worth mentioning.
