The Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences met Friday morning to discuss the consequences for actor Will Smith following his slap of presenter Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars telecast, and voted to ban Smith from all Academy events including the Oscars for 10 years.

Smith, who resigned from the Academy last week, replied soon after in a statement, saying “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”

Here is the Academy’s statement:

“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.

During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.

Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.
There are endless layers to this, so I’ll just ask:

Thoughts on this as a precedent-setting move following “Slap Gate?”

This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.”

yeah i'm sure everyone's hands are sore from clutching their pearls :blobtriumph:

This is a pretty significant progress honestly.

If enough people get banned from the Oscars maybe we can stop having this shitshow every year.

Bro, who actually cares. I just want to watch awards get given out, actively taking away from the impact these movies make and have fun doing it, The Will smith slap thing was funny, bring him back next year if you want people to watch like fr. (apart from Coda, I actually liked Coda. They also had Joni songs in it, so it’s automatically better)

Give Almodovar more Oscar’s.

This is a lot of my mindset, too—the Academy is acting like Will and Chris aren’t contemporaries, as if they haven’t worked together before, don’t know a lot of the same networks, etc. Quashing the issue on a personal level was probably much easier than the meeting these folx had to decide how long was appropriate enough to ban a world famous actor from a shitty TV award show lol

If anything, though, this just gives the event more press/publicity that leads people to ask “what’s next?” so I doubt it will do anything to saturate viewership. Quality is probably the only thing that will consistently continue to fall.

now that we are in a forum where srs deranged discussion can occur:

tbh you would not hear anything about the oscars coming out of my mouth if it wasn't for this drama. so pretty good free pr for the oscars courtesy of one will smith, pretty exploitative of the oscars imo. my initial instinct was that this was a stunt no lie. cause i m v conspiracy minded individual.

Big fan of both chris rock and will smith. Mainstream online culture is v obsessed w the idea that will smith is a cuck because of pornography, so there is a whole thing w will and jada smith's relationship related to a backlash against the smith family (representing progressive sexual mores) (disclaimer: i am not an advocate or opponent of polyamory but i think the backlash against the smith family is part of an effort to undermine gay representation)

anyway, the oscars are p :psyduck: to ban will smith because the oscars are so irrelevant culturally, compared to the smith family. imo. there is some element of inter-industry conflict at play. the will smith family, in being somewhat of a niche part of gay representations, is a family entertain brand ala the Kardashians, this type of new reality tv lifestyle entertainment family branding is perhaps somehow in competition with the cultural and economic interests of hollywood film studios, so there is that angle too???

idk what else there is rly to discuss. I see many perspectives, like, on the one hand I thought the joke wasn't that disrespectful not being the person or group 'targeted' by the joke. on the other hand comedians are just major losers for the most part particularly anyone from before like 2015, like chris rock's era, tends to be kinda major garbage loser wannabe creeper entertainers liek chapelle, louis ck, aziz etc so there is that whole aspect of being a male stand up comedian where you have to see this joke as part of a industry habit or culture of having dumb punch down low brow jokes. There is something rotten in that industry's iconography/archetypes that seems related to an event like this coming about.

thanks for reeadin.

imo this is all the wrong way around

keep will smith, put him chris rock's spot, and then just open envelopes and call vapid rich hotties to the stage one by one in order for him to slap them

now youve got yourselves a ceremony..
