[OVERVIEW]
Kingdra serves as an extremely versatile and unpredictable threat; with the ability to use all three Choice items, set up with Dragon Dance, and wallbreak with Focus Energy, Kingdra is able to perform a wide variety of offensive roles for its team on both the physical and special sides of the offensive spectrum. Kingdra is also able to perform well in all stages of the game, whether breaking open walls in early-game scenarios with Choice Specs Draco Meteor, serving as an offensive pivot with Flip Turn in mid-game, or cleaning after a Dragon Dance. Kingdra excels in the many roles it fulfills for its team through its ability to threaten common Water-weak threats like Sandaconda, Charizard, and Regirock while being able to effortlessly spam Draco Meteor into a metagame somewhat lacking Fairy- and Steel-type Pokemon pre-Terastallization. Kingdra can fall short against dedicated walls on the offensive side it's attempting to break using; examples of Physical walls include Orthworm and Weezing, while Special walls include Snorlax, Articuno and Dudunsparce. Kingdra also lacks longevity since it very rarely runs Heavy-Duty Boots and often takes recoil with its physical sets, which means that teams that force it out or maintain offensive momentum against it can often beat it over time. While Terastallization serves as a wonderful offensive tool for Kingdra, foes Terastallizing into types that resist Water or Dragon can flip the tables on it, slowing it down or stopping it completely. Lastly, while Kingdra has a very respectable Speed tier, foes that outpace it like Hisuian Electrode, Jolteon, Bruxish, and Choice Scarf Passimian can cause grief for it, especially once it's chipped down.
[SET]
CritDra (Kingdra) @ Scope Lens
Ability: Sniper
Tera Type: Steel / Water
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Focus Energy
- Hydro Pump
- Draco Meteor
- Substitute / Agility
[SET COMMENTS]
With the excellent combination of Scope Lens, Focus Energy, and Sniper, Kingdra serves as an outstanding specially offensive Wallbreaker after just one turn of setup. Hydro Pump and Draco Meteor serve as near mandatory STAB attacks, as Kingdra needs as much power as possible to break through the foes its targeting. Kingdra's last move is dedicated to adding depth to its game, with Substitute allowing Kingdra to avoid status and Agility allowing it to potentially sweep in late-game scenarios. A Timid nature is useful to catch threats like Bombirdier, Mesprit, Braviary, and Passimian, while a Modest nature provides maximum wallbreaking power.
Kingdra is somewhat frail and can find it difficult to find the turns it needs to set up, so pivoting teammates that can help it get in safely like Passimian, Hisuian Electrode, Bruxish, and Uxie are greatly appreciated. Paralysis and Sticky Web support from teammates like Dudunsparce, Sandaconda, and Vikavolt pair amazingly with Kingdra, who can take advantage of foes expecting to outpace it. Kingdra struggles immensely to break past Snorlax and Articuno even after setting up with Focus Energy, so teammates that can abuse these two like Glastrier and Regirock pair well with it. Lastly, teammates like Hisuian Electrode, Hoopa, Jolteon, and Mesprit work well alongside Kingdra to help pressure offensive cores and make progress for Kingdra or vice versa.
[SET]
Choice Scarf (Kingdra) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Damp
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Water
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Draco Meteor
- Flip Turn
- Scald
[SET COMMENTS]
Kingdra serves as a fast offensive pivot, revenge killer, and cleaner when equipped with a Choice Scarf, outpacing the entire unboosted metagame with its solid Speed tier. Hydro Pump and Draco Meteor serve as high power STAB options for revenge killing, while Scald threatens common switch ins like Alcremie and Snorlax with burn. Lastly, Flip Turn allows Kingdra to maintain momentum for its team.
