With a taste of poison paradise - Poison Monotype Team!

Well hello guys! This is my first thread, and my first monotype team - Poison, a type that's stereotyped to be weak and rather useless save for a few moves like Toxic. Without further ado, I present my team!

Koga (Crobat) (M) @
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 128 HP / 128 Atk / 64 Def / 60 SDef / 128 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Taunt
- Roost
- Super Fang
- Acrobatics

I use Crobat here as lead. It's set is meant to be rather bulky. Taunt on slower leads/set ups. After taunting, either SF/Acro on whoever. Pretty self explanatory. Slower than leads like Aerodactyl, Crobat, etc so I go for the Acro/Super Fang instead of Taunt. Currently wondering if I should switch the Roost for U-Turn since I can only survive OHKOs like half the time.

Horatian (Drapion) (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Pursuit
- Whirlwind
- Earthquake
- Aqua Tail

My Psychic-immune Pokemon. With Psychic as a rather common counter to stop a team full of Poison-types, I switch in Drapion to the unsuspecting Psychic attack. Usual switch-ins are Gengar, Alakazam, Starmie, etc. Go for the Pursuit which OHKOs the first 2 most of the time, if they don't switch anyway. I have found that my team has a problem with setups so I stuck the Whirlwind there... Maybe I should switch the item to Life Orb? :o

Monarch (Nidoking) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Earth Power
- Flamethrower
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam

Mm, my Electric immunity for Crobat and Tentacruel counters. Also act as a revenge kill thanks to Sheer Force and Choice Scarf. Also bait/setup for Psychic/Ground. This thing works out to be rather beastly and unexpected, IMO. Most people expect a Physical Nido, or do not suspect the versatile type coverage set.

Protocol (Weezing) (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Thunderbolt
- Haze
- Pain Split

Basically a Sp. Wall, though I don't really use it well. :/ Haze is for set ups, where I'll switch Weezing in since he can take hits like a boss. Flamethrower for unsuspecting Scizors/Forretress/Ferrothorn. Thunderbolt for Gyarados. Pain Split to heal, yadda yadda.

Glasglow (Gengar) (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Normal, Fighting and Ground immunity makes Gengar rather easy to switch into. Substitute on the free switch. Hidden Power for Scizor, etc. Hidden Power for T-tar, and Chansey if you're up for a stall wall, feeling ballsy etc.

Gems (Tentacruel) (F) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SDef
Hardy Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Surf
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

My firewall. Switch in to fires, and set up the Spikes if possible. A rather decent wall, with Rest + Sleep Talk. Might change Surf to Scald for the influx of Steel and Flying types. :/

The Immunities:

Ground - Crobat, Gengar, Weezing
Psychic - Drapion
Fighting - Gengar
Electric - Nidoking
Fighting - Gengar
Normal - Gengar

Weaknesses:

Usually lose to set up teams. :/
Being outplayed and out-predicted
Walled to death

Strengths

Pretty fun
Britney Spears sings about your team
Cool
Messes up Baton Passing team with great prediction
Messes up a lot of teams, in fact, with great prediction
Funny to watch your opponents ragequit when you keep switching in to immunities

Additional comments

Maybe I should stick a Toxicroak with Dry Skin somewhere for Water immunity? :/

Edit: Oh and this team competes with OU tiers and below. :)

Edit2: Updated team @ http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3742685&postcount=8

I would change weezing to be a physical wall .
Mainly because he can get only like 250 SpDef i think while in a physically defensive role he gets 350+ defense. You can keep the same moves or you could put a willowisp in there to criple physical attackers (carefull with that if they have a guts pokemon on the team)
This will benefit the team in common because i noticed it didnt really have a physical wall yet. You had a tentacruel as a bulky pokemon to both special and physical but if u change it to fully special defense , then together with weezing it creates a rather stong defensive core.
You dont have a rappid spinner either , wich can hurt you alot in the end.
Tentacruel can learn rapid spin so maybe give him the rapid spin. On the downside of that you cant let him sleeptalk anymore as he wont have anything to attack next to Tspikes and rapid spin. What you could do is give him surf/scald , rest , rapid spin , sludge bomb.
No toxic spikes anymore , just so you dont accidentually toxic a guts pokemon as this would sign your death probably. No sleep talk anymore either but u could change surf/scald or sludge bomb for sleep talk if you like it that much :)

For crobat , i dont know if acrobatics is that valuable.
I would use a set like this:

Crobat @ leftovers
Inner focus
252 Hp , 252 Speed , 6 attack
Jolly nature
Taunt
U-turn
Roost
SuperFang

This set can take quite some hits and with roost even more.
You wont deal alot of dammage with U-turn , then again with attack EV's it wont be so much better.
Superfang is a set amount of dammage so wont need attack ev's for that.
And taunt for the obvious reasons.

Definitely change Drapion's item to Life Orb. With a set like that its better that its not locked into any move, especially whirlwind
Your Crobat set is too balanced in some sense. I would use this set instead
Crobat (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 232 HP / 132 Attk / 144 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Taunt
- U-Turn
- Super Fang
- Brave Bird
Similar to your own one, but with U-Turn that comes in handy for dangerous leads, and Brave Bird over Acro for higher power and allows you to use Leftovers. This one is more offense-orientated so you could change the attk EVs to def and sp.def if you want it to be more bulky

Hope I helped

I reccomend this Crobat set

Crobat (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 168 HP / 172 Def / 168 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Super Fang
- Toxic/Taunt
- Roost
- Brave Bird/U-Turn

this is mainly meant to take advantage of crobat's easily abusable defensive stats, while also countering almost all bulky leads.

Hi,
First off, your Nidoking would have much better purpose and pose as a larger threat if you used this set instead:
Nidoking @ Life Orb | Sheer Force
Timid | Earth Power / Thunderbolt / Ice Beam / Flamethrower
4 HP / 252 SpAtt / 252 Spe
With this set, you still have speed, your power is increased by 30%, and you have the ability to switch between moves and have excellent coverage.

How about you use Weezing as your physically defensive wall and then you use Tentacruel as your specially defensive wall. This allows the pokes to do what they do best, and they still fit nicely into your team. For Weezing, just change all of your SpDef EVs to Def EVs. If you want to, you can change Tentacrual to all HP and SpDef EVs (4 Def) due to those EVs being popular last gen to stop Infernape from 2HKOing you with Close Combat; but, do to Ape being not too popular, you don't really have to worry about that.
Drapion with Leftovers/Life Orb would be much more effective since putting CB on something that uses Whirlwind really wouldn't work that well since you need to be able to switch moves to deal with the new poke that came in on the Whirlwind switch.
On Tentacruel, I would definitely switch Surf to Scald. Scald offers you to cripple physically attacking pokes, and it also allows you to setup Toxic Spikes easier.
Is there any reason for those weird EVs on Crobat? EVs like that are usually only used for surviving a specific attack, or being able to net a KO and still have a certain amount of HP (or the like). If they aren't used for something particular then I suggest running an EV spread of 4 HP/ 252 Att/ 252 Spe. Also, try out U-turn and Brave Bird over Super Fang and Acrobatics, respectively.

Since this is a monotype team, I really didn't want to change any pokes.
So, good luck with what you have and I hope I helped!

I'm only going to address the weak areas you listed as I haven't played Monotype in a long time.

You mentioned that you have a weakness to set up teams/sweepers. Have you considered Haze on Crobat?

Crobat @ Leftovers
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 128 HP / 128 Atk / 64 Def / 60 SDef / 128 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Haze
- Roost
- Super Fang
- Brave Bird

I know losing Taunt can be frustrating but slow bulky boosters will be infuriated by you removing all their boosts when they thought they had a clear win. Also, Jesus would do leftovers. That's a personal and divine choice but if you really want full powered acrobatics at that cost it's up to you. I would compliment these changes with the below set.

Gems (Tentacruel) (F) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SDef
Calm / Bold Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Rapid Spin

Rapid Spin adds some of the utility that you would lose with the replacement of Taunt on Crobat. UnSTABed Ice Beam is a shitty move to end up locked into. I would recommend having it as Rest + Sleep Talk is fairly redendant given the changes.

Also, if you are allowed a wild card I would recommend this little fella'

Scrafty @ Life Orb
Trait: Shed Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Drain Punch / Hi Jump Kick
- Crunch
- Ice Punch
- Dragon Dance

Over Drapion for the Psychic Immunity. Good luck with the team.

Have you tried Venomoth over Crobat (possibly)?

Venomoth@
Tinted Lens
EVs: 252 SpAtk / 252 Spd / 4 Def
-Bug Buzz
-Sleep Powder
-Quiver Dance
-Baton Pass

You keep the Poison typing, plus being able to give +1 SpAtk, SpDef, and Speed to either Gengar or Nidoking for an easier sweep, or giving it to anyone on the team (all but Drapion would run special attacks, Weezing could use the SpDef boost, etc.) would be helpful.

Hey guys! Thanks so much for the much appreciated comments! :) Read all the suggestions and improved my team, kinda. Will test it out soon though. :)
Mmm, I kinda like the pure walls suggestion and will probably test such a team out. But I don't really have problem with Guts Pokémon, since they probably have a Flame Orb or Toxic Orb on them anyway. And without speed boosts, I can pretty much kill them rather easily. So I probably won't take out Toxic Spikes or Sleep Talk, since those two are the most essential moves of the Tentacruel set. I might switch Scald over Surf though. :) Mm, about the Crobat set, I'm thinking more of an offensive set rather than bulky one. Purpose is sort of like kamikaze - to get rid of as many Pokémon as possible, especially their lead, so I'll probably stick to my set. :)
Yup, I've changed to LO on my Drapion after logic kicked in as I posted my thread last night lol. It's been working quite better now! :O I'll try Flight Gem Acro and then your set for Crobat to see which works better! :) Maybe I'll use a combination of the two since I quite like the idea of scouting with U-turn as my team is pretty oriented on switching around...

m1k3y said:
Mm, that's a pretty bulky Crobat, but that means I have to forgo being faster than most leads... Which might spell my doom. :/

Eos said:
I've thought about that, but that would mean that I would lose a rather hefty amount of speed. The basis of this Nido is to revenge kill, and after that my opponent switches into something obvious, and I'll switch into Drapion or Gengar/Cro/Weezing to counter with the immunity. So I probably wouldn't mind being locked into a move. :o

The switching Surf for Scald part seems like a nice touch, I'll probably go for it. :) Furthermore I usually only get 1 Toxic Spikes in anyway... So burn is good too. :o I've changed the Drapion set, and will soon be testing out the Tentacruel and Weezing walls! As for the Crobat, it's supposed to be kinda bulky. Standard situation: Taunt, Acrobats, survive if opponent has Sash/Sturdy/is bulky, Arobats the opponent into oblivion.

SmileZ said:
Hmm. The Haze part is a good suggestion, but I don't really like the idea of losing Taunt, and since Crobat is rather kamikaze-ish, I'll probably not use it... Though I would love to use it my other Crobat set! :)

I don't get the Ice Beam-being locked part. :o 70% of most times my opponents can't set up entry hazards, so I'll probably not use Rapid Spin, and when I tried using a RS Tentacruel, I often end up sacrificing her. :/ So probably not.

And thanks for the Scrafty suggestion, I will definitely use it if I can have a wild card! I kinda like that little guy, maybe I'll build a new team around him! :O

Hmm, with a base 90 Speed, Venomoth should be a rather decent Baton Passer... But it probably won't work as a lead though. :o Maybe I can try switching it for Gengar... But that would mean I lose 3 immunities. :/ And the Sleep Powder accuracy seems pretty risky so it's do or die... I'll think it up again though! :)

Thanks guys for all these helpful suggestions! I've built a new team and shall try it out soon. Thank you all and all suggestions/criticism are welcome! :) Changes are in bold!

Koga (Crobat) (M) @ Flight Gem
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 128 HP / 164 Atk / 44 Def / 44 SDef / 128 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Taunt
- Roost
- Super Fang
- Acrobatics

With Flight Gem I think it's a confirmed 2HKO on those pesky Bulky Politoed leads. Hurrah!

Horatian (Drapion) (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Pursuit
- Whirlwind
- Earthquake
- Aqua Tail

Protocol (Weezing) (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Def
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Thunderbolt
- Haze
- Pain Split

Trying out for a Physical Wall

Gems (Tentacruel) (F) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SDef Or just make it a Special Wall. :o And I just realised it's nature is Hardy, crap.
Hardy Nature Gonna switch it to +Def/+SDef, my bad :/
- Toxic Spikes
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Edit: Against Bulky lead Politoeds, Super Fang 1st, then Acro = 2HKO. Against 0/252/0/252/0/0 Abomasnow, you can OHKO with Acro, but Ice Beam may or may not kill you. Against 252/0/252/0/0/0 +Def Forretress, it's a ~33% with boosted Acro. Weezing takes +6 DDance Dnite's Dragon Claw like a boss. Deals around 98%ish. Takes +2 at ~59%ish. Shell Smashed Adamant 0/252/0/0/0/0 Cloyster 2HKOes Weezing with Icicle Spear and Metronome. Also takes rather good Sp Atks, too, surviving Galvantula's LO Thunder with ~20% left. Tentacruel takes Sp. Atks pretty well too. I forgot the damage and stuff... :/ Can take 2 LO Electivire's Tpunch. Not sure about Wild Charge though.

If you want acrobatics to be effective i think it would be stronger without the flight gem.
But you said you wanted your crobat to be like a suicide lead.
Then i would defenatly change the acrobatics for brave bird as brave bird does alot of dammage , add the flight gem to that and you have a very strong move.

To elaborate, your team has trouble switching into Gliscor, especially after a Swords Dance. When you bring in Nidoking to Ice Beam it's pretty predictable. The reason I suggested Ice Beam on Tenta is that being locked into it without being Specs Kyurem is dangerous.

Again good luck.

1) on crobat you should try a flying gem, it will power up your first acrobatics to monsturous levels. I would also recommend changing the evs on your crobat to
112hp 252atck 144spe. this will allow you maximum attack (and acrobatics) power, allow you to outspeed base 115's, and have a little bit of bulk.

2) Change weezing to the standard physical wall set, trust me it takes physical hits like a beast. It will also check scizor for you allowing you to run subdisable on your gengar.

3) have you tried a swords dance set on drapion? having more than one choice user can be a big burden in ceratin situations. Either that or slap a life orb on your nidoking if you think you REALLY need whirlwind.

I love to play monotype as well. I hope this advice will help you go to higher levels,
Good luck!
